Guidance for Human Somatic Cell Therapy and Gene Therapy – FDA

Posted: Published on October 28th, 2014

Definitions of Somatic Cell Therapy and Gene Therapy Recently, various innovative therapies involving the ex vivo manipulation and subsequent reintroduction of somatic cells into humans have been used or proposed. Somatic cell therapy is the administration to humans of autologous, allogeneic, or xenogeneic living cells which have been manipulated or processed ex vivo. Manufacture of products for somatic cell therapy involves the ex vivo propagation, expansion, selection (see: "A Proposed Approach to the Regulation of Cellular and Tissue-based Products", Feb. 28, 1997, (62 FR 9721)), or pharmacologic treatment of cells, or other alteration of their biological characteristics. Such cellular products might also be used for diagnostic or preventive purposes. Manufacturers should review policy and regulations to determine how a particular somatic cell therapy or gene therapy product is regulated. Recently, various innovative therapies involving the introduction of somatic cells into humans have been used or proposed. For the purpose of this Guidance, the term somatic cell therapy refers to the administration to humans of autologous, allogeneic, or xenogeneic living non-germline cells, other than transfusable blood products, for therapeutic, diagnostic, or preventive purposes. Gene therapy is a medical intervention based on modification of the genetic material of living cells. Cells may … Continue reading

History of biotechnology – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: Published on October 28th, 2014

Biotechnology is the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to provide goods and services.[1] From its inception, biotechnology has maintained a close relationship with society. Although now most often associated with the development of drugs, historically biotechnology has been principally associated with food, addressing such issues as malnutrition and famine. The history of biotechnology begins with zymotechnology, which commenced with a focus on brewing techniques for beer. By World War I, however, zymotechnology would expand to tackle larger industrial issues, and the potential of industrial fermentation gave rise to biotechnology. However, both the single-cell protein and gasohol projects failed to progress due to varying issues including public resistance, a changing economic scene, and shifts in political power. Yet the formation of a new field, genetic engineering, would soon bring biotechnology to the forefront of science in society, and the intimate relationship between the scientific community, the public, and the government would ensue. These debates gained exposure in 1975 at the Asilomar Conference, where Joshua Lederberg was the most outspoken supporter for this emerging field in biotechnology. By as early as 1978, with the synthesis of synthetic human insulin, Lederberg's claims would prove … Continue reading

Each diagram is followed by a summary of information, providing a context for the process illustrated. The major actors of molecular biology: the nucleic acids, DNA and RNA. How they carry and transfer genetic information from one cell generation to the next and translate this coded information into active proteins. From atoms to molecules and cells to tissues, a study of structure and function. Eucaryotic cell duplication: how chromosomes and genes transmit the information from one mother cell to subsequent generations. From the existing techniques of DNA cloning to gene therapy: understanding the present and a look at the future of genetic engineering. From Mendel to hemophilia: introduction to the major principles of heredity. biological inheritance influences what and who we are. Genetic messengers surrounded by a protein coat.
