Dubai cuts profile as Mideast plastic surgery hub

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) Dubai, the emirate known for its celebration of over-the-top glamour and luxury, is racing ahead to dominate the Middle East's plastic surgery market with plans to attract half a million medical tourists in six years. Where cosmopolitan Beirut was once the region's best known city for going under the knife, turmoil in Syria and violence often spilling into Lebanon is driving away wealthy Arab tourists. After splashing out on medical infrastructure over the past years, Dubai already ranks globally and aims to move up the list of top international destinations for medical tourism. Plastic Surgeon in Orange County Answers Two Facial Rejuvenation FAQs

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

SOURCE: Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute Dr. Daniel Mills of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute Answers Two Popular Questions Asked by Patients Considering Facial Rejuvenation Surgery at His Practice LAGUNA BEACH, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 22, 2014) - According to Orange County plastic surgeon Daniel Mills, MD, facial rejuvenation surgeries comprise a large percentage of the total number of cosmetic procedures he performs at the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute each year. During the consultation process for facial rejuvenation surgery, he says the majority of his prospective patients often have several similar inquiries, two of which commonly include: 1.How Much Younger Will I Look After Facial Rejuvenation Surgery? 2.How Much Pain Should I Expect After Facial Rejuvenation Surgery? Though he acknowledges the answer to the first question varies by individual, Dr. Mills says most of his patients feel they appear about eight to ten years younger after facial rejuvenation surgery, depending on the particular procedure and/or combination of procedures they receive. For example, he says facelift surgery performed alone will likely take more years off one's face than a browlift, just as both procedures performed in combination with blepharoplasty will often yield more dramatic results than each procedure achieves on its own. The Science Behind Renee Zellweger's New Face

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

Photographs of actress Rene Zellweger at the Elle magazine's Women in Hollywood awards this week, showing her dramatically different appearance, have sparked the Internet's interest. The 45-year-old actress looked almost unrecognizable to fans who know her best from her earlier movies such as "Jerry Maguire" and "Bridget Jones's Diary." But two cosmetic surgeons told Live Science that Zellweger's transformation could be the result of relatively minor procedures, as well as weight loss and normal aging. (Zellweger herself has attributed her changed appearance to lifestyle changes and natural aging.) Zellweger looks so different because her most distinctive features are the ones that changed dramatically, said both Dr. Michael C. Edwards, the president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Stuart Linder, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, California. [7 Plastic Surgery Myths Revealed] It doesn't seem likely that the actress had an invasive surgery, such as a mini-facelift, done, Edwards said. Still, "it's a pretty remarkable change," he said. Eyes make the face The biggest difference in Zellweger's appearance is around her eye area, Edwards said. The actress always had very distinctive, heavy eyelids. "That's what made her Renee Zellweger," Edwards told Live Science. But in the … Continue reading

The New York Stem Cell Foundation Research Institute announces largest-ever stem cell repository

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 22-Oct-2014 Contact: David McKeon dmckeon@nyscf.org 212-365-7440 New York Stem Cell Foundation @nyscf NEW YORK, NY (October 22, 2014) The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute, through the launch of its repository in 2015, will provide for the first time the largest-ever number of stem cell lines available to the scientific research community. Initially, over 600 induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines and 1,000 cultured fibroblasts from over 1,000 unique human subjects will be made available, with an increasing number available in the first year. To collect these samples, NYSCF set up a rigorous human subjects system that protects patients and allows for the safe and anonymous collection of samples from people interested in participating in research. A pilot of over 200 of NYSCF's iPS cell lines is already searchable on an online database. The pilot includes panels of iPS cell lines generated from donors affected by specific diseases such as type 1 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, as well as a diversity panel of presumed healthy donors from a wide range of genetic backgrounds representing the United States Census. These panels, curated to provide ideal initial cohorts for studying each area, include subjects ranging … Continue reading

Human Skin Cells Reprogrammed Directly Into Brain Cells

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Scientists have described a way to convert human skin cells directly into a specific type of brain cell affected by Huntingtons disease, an ultimately fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Unlike other techniques that turn one cell type into another, this new process does not pass through a stem cell phase, avoiding the production of multiple cell types, the studys authors report. The researchers, at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, demonstrated that these converted cells survived at least six months after injection into the brains of mice and behaved similarly to native cells in the brain. Not only did these transplanted cells survive in the mouse brain, they showed functional properties similar to those of native cells, said senior author Andrew S. Yoo, PhD, assistant professor of developmental biology. These cells are known to extend projections into certain brain regions. And we found the human transplanted cells also connected to these distant targets in the mouse brain. Thats a landmark point about this paper. The work appears Oct. 22 in the journal Neuron. The investigators produced a specific type of brain cell called medium spiny neurons, which are important for controlling movement. … Continue reading

I have been to various docs and they have done cat scans, x-ray, blood work and the whole bit, but they found nothing. I have also had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy but these tests have all come back normal too. I haven't been to the OB doctor because in 2010 I had a hysterectomy and everything is gone. Minister sparks backlash for suggesting foreigners could undergo ‘three-parent babies’ IVF treatment in Britain

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

The row surrounds mitochondrial DNA transfer, a technique that would offer parents at high risk of having children with severe disabilities such as muscular dystrophy a donor's DNA to mend genetic flaws. Legislation approving the procedure, which is outlawed in other European countries, is expected to be voted on later this year. The proposals have triggered fierce debate, with critics warning the "unethical" treatment would effectively create children with three parents and supporters saying it would help stop certain genetic defects from being passed on. Appearing before a Commons committee considering the legislation, Ms Ellison was asked whether the treatment would be made available to oversees citizens. "Over time we might expect that the procedure might be offered by centres to oversees patients," Ms Ellison said. "But that would be for individual clinics to assess each case and of course they would all have to work within the regulatory framework, and the clinics would assess the case and prioritise." Prof Sally Davies, the Government's Chief Medical Officer, added that "all oversees patients would pay the full cost" of treatment. Lord Allen, a cross-bench peer, said: "Turning the UK into a tourist destination, encouraging and enabling people to break the laws … Continue reading
