Eczema – A recurrent rash everyone complains about

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

Editor's Note: Covenant Health Plainview is offering a four week segment about common health concerns. These articles are written by the four residents that are currently in rotation with local physicians. These residents are among the best of their peers, and are focused on advancing rural healthcare. Eczema is a common skin condition that occurs most frequently in children, but can also affect adults. The word Eczema comes from a Greek word meaning "eruption or to boil out". Also known as Atopic dermatitis, Eczema is a skin problem that causes dry, itchy, bumpy, red skin but is not contagious. At this time, there is no cure, but in most cases, symptoms can be controlled. Eczema usually occurs in the first year of life but may appear as late as the age of five. Many cases, as much as 40 percent of cases, will clear by adulthood. In babies and children, the skin may be intensely itchy, scaly, and many times, red patches are seen on the face, scalp, arms and legs, but groin areas are usually spared. The skin in older individuals, with more recurrent flares, are thickened, dark and scarred due to repeated scratching. It is usually seen in … Continue reading

Tampa dermatologists clinical trial for sufferers of eczema ongoing

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman continues to conduct a clinical trial for eczema and is seeking new patients to participate in what may be a one-of-a-kind, breakthrough treatment that will alleviate symptoms for those who suffer from the skin condition. In an effort to provide an effective solution for patients, the Tampa dermatologist is administering the treatment in hopes that participants will see a noticeable improvement of their skin by the end of the trial. I would encourage anyone who suffers from eczema to take advantage of this opportunity, says Dr. Forman. The goal of this treatment is to provide patients with positive, long-term results that will relieve irritation and itchiness and improve the appearance of their skin. Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is a skin condition characterized by irritated skin due to the release of inflammatory chemicals in the body. Common symptoms include a combination of itchy, dry and red patchy skin on areas of the body including the face, hands and neck. Patients enrolled in the trial will receive subcutaneous (injected under the skin) medication at no cost, as well as free lab tests and exams by the Tampa dermatologist and his office. In addition, volunteers will … Continue reading

Minister sparks backlash for suggesting foreigners could undergo 'three-parent babies' IVF treatment in Britain

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

The row surrounds mitochondrial DNA transfer, a technique that would offer parents at high risk of having children with severe disabilities such as muscular dystrophy a donor's DNA to mend genetic flaws. Legislation approving the procedure, which is outlawed in other European countries, is expected to be voted on later this year. The proposals have triggered fierce debate, with critics warning the "unethical" treatment would effectively create children with three parents and supporters saying it would help stop certain genetic defects from being passed on. Appearing before a Commons committee considering the legislation, Ms Ellison was asked whether the treatment would be made available to oversees citizens. "Over time we might expect that the procedure might be offered by centres to oversees patients," Ms Ellison said. "But that would be for individual clinics to assess each case and of course they would all have to work within the regulatory framework, and the clinics would assess the case and prioritise." Prof Sally Davies, the Government's Chief Medical Officer, added that "all oversees patients would pay the full cost" of treatment. Lord Allen, a cross-bench peer, said: "Turning the UK into a tourist destination, encouraging and enabling people to break the laws … Continue reading

Professor hopes for clinical trials on local disorder

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

It might have been any group of settlers that brought the genetic mutation, unaware that it would pass from generation to generation. Now, hundreds of years later, many in New Mexico are still living with this incurable family curse. Dr. Sarah Youssof, a physician in the UNM Department of Neurology, is laying the groundwork for human clinical trials for this rare genetic disease known as oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD). She is working to develop outcome measures gauging the severity of the disease that can be used to evaluate treatment options. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions website, OPMD is a type of muscular dystrophy that causes degeneration of certain muscles initially muscles in the eyes and throat leading to difficulty swallowing and opening the eyelids. OPMD can also cause weakness in the limbs, and symptoms of OPMD typically appear around middle age. The disease affects approximately 1 in 100,000 people, CDC officials said. However, its far less rare in New Mexico than in any other area of the country. While it is an extremely rare disease there are fewer than 150 definite cases in the state approximately 12 times as many Hispanics in New Mexico have the … Continue reading

Autism Speaks commits $2.3 million to research on gut-brain connection

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 22-Oct-2014 Contact: Aurelia Grayson aurelia.grayson@autismspeaks.org 646-385-8531 Autism Speaks @autismspeaks New York, N.Y. (October 22, 2014) -- Autism Speaks, the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, has selected two major research projects one focused on intestinal bacteria, the other on chronic constipation to advance understanding of autism's gut-brain connection. Funding for the studies, each spanning three years, will total more than $2.3 million. Research conducted through the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (ATN) has demonstrated that gastrointestinal (GI) problems are very common among individuals who have autism and can worsen behavioral symptoms. In the fall of 2012, this progress was reflected in a series of guidelines on the management of autism-related medical conditions including chronic constipation published in the respected journal Pediatrics. Other research sponsored by Autism Speaks showed that in mice deliberate changes in the bacteria in the gut (known as "microbiome") can affect social behavior. To follow-up on these breakthrough findings, Autism Speaks launched an initiative to fund new research on the "gut-brain" connection in autism. The most promising applicants were judged on the basis of potential impact and the soundness of their science. Proposals were reviewed by Autism Speaks science staff and a panel … Continue reading
