BASF staff brings chemistry to Orchard Knob students

Posted: Published on October 22nd, 2014

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Volunteers from BASF brought the company's Kids' Lab program to students at Orchard Knob Elementary School in celebration of National Chemistry Week. Through Kids' Lab, we are creating fun with chemistry to tap into children's natural curiosity and encourage them to explore scientific concepts, said Robert Gagliano, BASF Site Manager. Our volunteers enjoy helping the children to understand science and how it relates to potential careers. The goal of the BASF Kids' Lab program is to help students gain a better understanding of chemistry, according to the BASF website. The students at Orchard Knob Elementary School explored how polymers behave and how they are used in chemistry. Part of the exercise allowed the students to create their own bouncy balls. Other classes learned how to create Elephant's Toothpaste, a colorful foam easily made from scratch with household ingredients. It is exciting for the students because they get the chance to see the relevance of chemistry in everyday life, said LaFrederick Thirkill, Orchard Knob Elementary School Principal. They are not just learning from a textbook; they are witnessing chemistry in action through products that have been created by BASF. The BASF Kids' Lab was launched in North … Continue reading

University Of Pennsylvania’s T-Cell Therapy Shows Promising Results

Posted: Published on October 22nd, 2014

By C. Rajan, contributing writer The University of Pennsylvania has announced promising results of its novel chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) therapy for cancer. In the study involving 25 children and five adults with end-stage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), there was an impressive 90 percent response rate with complete remission. Twenty-seven of the 30 patients went into complete remission after receiving the investigational therapy (called CTL019), and 78 percent of the patients were alive six months after treatment. The longest remission among the patients has lasted almost three years. The patients who participated in these trials had relapsed as many as four times, including 60 percent whose cancers came back even after stem cell transplants. Their cancers were so aggressive they had no treatment options left, said the studys senior author, Stephan Grupp, MD, PhD, at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The durable responses we have observed with CTL019 therapy are unprecedented. The ongoing study is being conducted by researchers at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). The CAR trial program enrolling children with leukemia is also expanding to nine other pediatric centers. The experimental CAR therapy received FDAs breakthrough designation in July … Continue reading

2 Indian American to pay US $380,000 to resolve fraud charges

Posted: Published on October 22nd, 2014

Two Indian-American cardiologists will pay US $380,000 to resolve allegations that they entered into fraudulent management agreements with a local hospital in exchange for referral of cardiology procedures and other healthcare services. Satyabrata Chatterjee and Ashwini Anand of Kentucky, who jointly owned a physician group that provided cardiology services, have agreed to pay the sum to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by entering into sham management agreements with Saint Joseph Hospital in exchange for the referral of cardiology procedures. The government alleged that the hospital entered into sham agreements with Chatterjee and Anand, under which the physicians were paid to provide management services but in reality did not do so. The government further alleged that, in exchange for the sham agreements, Chatterjee and Anand agreed to enter into an exclusive agreement with St. Joseph to refer their patients to the hospital for cardiology and other services in violation of federal laws. "Physicians who place their financial interests above the well-being of their patients will be held accountable," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Joyce Branda for the Civil Division. In addition to payment of the settlement amount, which was based on Chatterjee and Anand's financial ability to pay, … Continue reading
