Posted: Published on October 18th, 2014

Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 4, Only Mama Knows shed some new light on the Ellis Grey of the past and the Richard of the present. Cases: Roy: Spinal graph blocks spinal blood flow Nadia: 10 year old with a giant abdominal tumor Round One: Ellis Grey, visionary, motivator to women in medicine, yet not the ideal mother figure. The word audacious is thrown around the episode like it was on clearance in the writers bin, but when you have a woman who names her discovery The Grey Method, what else would you call it? Meredith and Derek are still going the rounds with no end in sight for their reconciliation. Derek is growing impatient with his wife, who claims she needed to stay in Seattle to shine. He wants results and he wants them sooner rather than later. Coming to terms with his own poor decision to abandon the DC job is not Merediths problem. A Unanimous Decision: Karev is back on the pediatric floor of Grey-Sloan Memorial, taking over the duties as an attending, helping out Arizona as she works through her fellowship. Posted: Published on October 18th, 2014

Meredith will be looking for clues into the truth about Maggies birth tonight on Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 4, Only Mama Knows. On the last episode of Greys Anatomy Meredith took sanctuary at Alexs house to vent about Maggie. Even though Alex was nervous about his meeting with the board he took the time to help Meredith look into her mothers medical files. What he found revealed that Ellis was indeed pregnant right around the correct time period of Maggies birth. Callie took on a new wounded veterans project along with Owen and Jackson. Despite already being stretched thin, Callie was excited to meet their potential surrogate. However, Arizona seemed to keep looking for excuses. Finally, Callie tuned into Arizonas hints and wasnt happy about it. Its unclear where the couple stands now that they arent trying to have another baby. Now that Derek isnt going to D.C. there doesnt seem to be enough room for both Shepherds in the Neuro department. Even though Amelia is technically the head of Neuro, Derek continually went over her head. Hes clearly taking out his anger on his sister. After giving presentations to the board, Bailey got the spot left vacant by … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy Recap: Can Meredith Convince Maggie to Stay?

Posted: Published on October 18th, 2014

Ellen Pompeo, Kate Burton It's a true ThrowbackThursdayedition ofGrey's Anatomythis week, with all kinds of new information about Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) and her relationship with Richard (James Pickens Jr.) coming to light. How did everyone feel about all the flashbacks? Personally I wasn't a fan of the ones that were intercut very jarringly, I might add with present-day scenes. But it was nice to see Ellis and Richard's relationship play out, and to finally get some answers about Ellis' suicide attempt. Also, Baby Meredith!: Anyway, to recap: The episode opens with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) watching old home movies of a speech her mother gave, in which Ellis discusses the problems she's faced as a woman in a male-dominated field. Meredith's feeling a little misandrist herself, with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) demanding an explanation as to why his wife decided to get day-drunk with Alex (Justin Chambers), and Meredith retorting that she doesn't owe Derek anything just because he decided to stay in Seattle, and declaring that she's no longer going to measure her accomplishments against his. "You sound just like your mother," he hurls in her face. Somebody get Meredith a sweater, because that wascold. (Side note: Speaking of questionable … Continue reading

Dr. Allen's Device Should Be Used After Stroke in the First Place as Recent Article Says No Hint of a Benefit from …

London, GB (PRWEB) October 17, 2014 If patients have already had a stroke or temporary ischemia, there is a high risk that this occurs again, therefore surgeons have tried to widen the narrowed vessels by stenting, however, as a recent article shows, side effects make these operations worse than treating with medications. However, patients condition after stroke can be improved by the use of Dr. Allens Device for Treatment of Head and Brain, as it increases the blood flow in the brain, Fine Treatment reveals. The article Intracranial stents: More strokes than with drug treatment alone, October 13, 2014, in the Science Codex, states that the risk of having another stroke is higher if patients, after dilation of their blood vessels in the brain, not only receive clot-inhibiting drugs, but also have small tubes called stents inserted. However, studies have provided no hint of a benefit from stenting, which is also referred to with the abbreviation "PTAS". This is the conclusion reached in the rapid report of the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG). The Research in Germany, named SAMMPRIS study, was relevant for the assessment of PTAS in comparison with drug treatment alone. SAMMPRIS included … Continue reading

Presence of enzyme may worsen effects of spinal cord injury and impair long-term recovery

Posted: Published on October 17th, 2014

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition with few treatment options. Studies show that damage to the barrier separating blood from the spinal cord can contribute to the neurologic deficits that arise secondary to the initial trauma. Through a series of sophisticated experiments, researchers reporting in The American Journal of Pathology suggest that matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) plays a pivotal role in disruption of the brain/spinal cord barrier (BSCB), cell death, and functional deficits after SCI. This link also presents new therapeutic possibilities. "Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes known to degrade the extracellular matrix and other extracellular proteins and are essential for remodeling of the extracellular matrix and wound healing. Excessive proteolytic activity of MMPs can be detrimental, leading to numerous pathological conditions, including blood brain barrier (BBB)/BSCB disruption after injury," explains Tae Young Yune, PhD, of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of Medicine, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea. Although other MMPs have been linked to SCI (i.e. MMP-2, MMP-9, and MMP-12), there has been no previous direct evidence of a similar role for MMP-3. By comparing mice that underwent spinal cord injury to a control group, investigators found that both MMP3 messenger RNA (mRNA) and … Continue reading

Caring mum needs support

EXTRA MILE: Kerianne Strachan, left, with her son Cam Armishaw, who has stage four Hodgkins lymphoma. Kerianne Strachan has risen to the challenges of raising a son with cerebral palsy and losing the father of her children. Now, with another son battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, the Canterbury mother still says her glass is half full. "I'm a pretty positive person. You have got to do what you have got to do," Strachan said. Her day starts at 8am when her first job is to give Cam, 16, his morning injection as part of his cancer treatment. She then helps get her 15-year-old son, Leath, who has cerebral palsy, out of bed, dressed and fed. Life has changed a lot for Strachan in the past few years. The father of her two sons died in an accident in March 2010, and Cam was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in August this year. "That came as a huge surprise," she said. "He was just your average teenager - he loved playing rugby, hanging out with his mates and his girlfriend of two years, Alicia, and was working part time at McDonalds, saving for a car." A lump on Cam's neck caused alarm. A doctor … Continue reading

MS services divided for city residents

Posted: Published on October 17th, 2014

By Cynthia Bigrigg Multimedia Journalist For people affected by multiple sclerosis, living on different sides of the border means a world of difference. Nobody knows this better than Ean Bull and Nicole Rolfes, two local residents who are affected by MS. Both have joined the Action on MS campaign, which calls on the federal government to ensure people with MS are provided with employment opportunities, income support when they are unable to work, and support for their caregivers. Ean Bull is a successful entrepreneur who employed his partner, Karen, for 15 years. Four years ago, Karen was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS. As her memory worsened, she became unable to continue working and Ean became her primary caregiver. Its been a tough, uphill battle, said Bull. The couple live on an acreage in Saskatchewan. Bull said he believes its easier for people living in Alberta to access treatment for MS than it is for those living in Saskatchewan. The nearest MS clinic is in Saskatoon, so if anything goes wrong, its a two-and-a-half hour drive there and back, said Bull, who added that when Karen needs an MRI to assess the lesions on her brain, in Lloydminster she can get an … Continue reading
