Elizabeth O'Brien's Retire Well: The new retirement splurge: Plastic surgery

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

Some boomers undergo cosmetic procedures to stay competitive on the job. Plenty of others wait until the rat race is over, and view a nip and a tuck as the ultimate reward in retirement. But does it make sense, financially or medically, to get some work done after youre done with work? Those 55 and over accounted for a quarter of all cosmetic-procedure patients in 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The total number of cosmetic procedures performed on this groupincluding minimally invasive treatments such as facial fillers as well as more involved surgeriesrose 4% from 2012 to 2013, to 3.8 million. The five most common cosmetic surgical procedures in the 55-plus demographic, in descending order, were: face-lift, forehead lift, ear reshaping, hair transplantation and pectoral implants. (Among all ages, nose reshaping was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in 2013.) People over 50 go under the knife for all sorts of reasons, plastic surgeons report. While some are seeking a boost before re-entering the dating scene, some happily married or happily single patients want their looks to better reflect the way they feel, while others want their clothes to fit better. The common thread? They finally … Continue reading

FDA fast-tracks Israeli ALS treatment

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

(JNS.org) Stem cell treatment developed by Israeli company BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics has been designated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a fast-track treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The treatment, called NurOwn, is currently undergoing mid-stage clinical trials in Jerusalem and in the U.S. on patients with ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease. The FDAs designation will speed up patients access to the treatment. The ALS Association reports that 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with the disease. The receipt of fast-track designation from the FDA is an acknowledgement of the unmet medical need in ALS, BrainStorm Chief Executive Tony Fiorino said Tuesday, Oct. 7, according to Reuters. What is so valuable about fast track designation to a small company like BrainStorm is the opportunity to have increased meetings with and more frequent written communication from the FDA, he said, adding that few other cellular therapies have received FDA approval. First report of long-term safety of human embryonic stem cells to treat human disease

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

New research published in The Lancet provides the first evidence of the medium-term to long-term safety and tolerability of transplanting human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) in humans. hESC transplants used to treat severe vision loss in 18 patients with different forms of macular degeneration appeared safe up to 3 years post-transplant, and the technology restored some sight in more than half of the patients. "Embryonic stem cells have the potential to become any cell type in the body, but transplantation has been complicated by problems including the risk of teratoma formation and immune rejection," explains lead author Professor Robert Lanza, Chief Scientific officer at Advanced Cell Technology in the USA. "As a result, immunoprivileged sites (that do not produce a strong immune response) such as the eye have become the first parts of the human body to benefit from this technology." In the two phase 1/2 studies, hESCs were differentiated into retinal pigment epithelium cells and transplanted into nine patients with Stargardt's macular dystrophy and nine patients with dry atrophic age-related macular degeneration, the leading causes of juvenile and adult blindness in the developed world, respectively. No effective treatments exist for either condition, and eventually the light-receiving (photoreceptor) cells of … Continue reading

Stem cells discovered in the esophagus

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

Despite previous indications to the contrary, the esophagus does have its own pool of stem cells, said researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in an animal study published online today in Cell Reports. The findings could lead to new insights into the development and treatment of esophageal cancer and the precancerous condition known as Barrett's esophagus. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 18,000 people will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the U.S. in 2014 and almost 15,500 people will die from it. In Barrett's esophagus, the lining of the esophagus changes for unknown reasons to resemble that of the intestine, though gastro-esophageal reflux disease or GERD is a risk factor for its development. "The esophageal lining must renew regularly as cells slough off into the gastrointestinal tract," said senior investigator Eric Lagasse, Pharm.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology, Pitt School of Medicine, and director of the Cancer Stem Cell Center at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. "To do that, cells in the deeper layers of the esophagus divide about twice a week to produce daughter cells that become the specialized cells of the lining. Until now, we haven't been able to determine whether … Continue reading

Stem Cell Eye Treatment May Restore Vision

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

Antonio Regalado for MIT Technology Review 2014-10-15 19:15:44 UTC When stem cells were first culled from human embryos sixteen years ago, scientists imagined they would soon be treating diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and many other diseases with cells manufactured in the lab. It's all taken longer than they thought. But now, a Massachusetts biotech firm has reported results from the largest, and longest, human test of a treatment based on embryonic stem cells, saying it appears safe and may have partly restored vision to patients going blind from degenerative diseases. Results of three-year study were described Tuesday in the Lancet by Advanced Cell Technology and collaborating eye specialists at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles who transplanted lab-grown cells into the eyes of nine people with macular degeneration and nine with Stargardt's macular dystrophy. The idea behind Advanced Cell's treatment is to replace retinal pigment epithelium cells, known as RPE cells, a type of caretaker tissue without which a person's photoreceptors also die, with supplies grown in laboratory. It uses embryonic stem cells as a starting point, coaxing them to generate millions of specialized retina cells. In the study, each patient received a transplant of between 50,000 and … Continue reading

Greeley Couple Turns To Crowdfunding For IVF Treatment

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

DENVER (CBS4) - Would you turn to online crowdfunding to pay for infertility problems? Thats exactly what more and more Americans are doing, and for some it seems to be working. I would have never thought in a million years, this was the situation we would be in, Ashley Kondracki says. She and her husband, Phillip, live in a Colorado home they hope soon welcomes a new baby. Phillip likes I would call them woodsman names, Ashley says. While they may not agree just yet on a baby name, they have agreed on going public on the website GoFundMe to raise money for in-vitro fertilization. The couple have been together for about four years. Both fresh from the military, they knew within a year of marriage they wanted children. I just always expected to be a Father, Phillip says. But Mother Nature had other plans. There is no chance now, Ashley says. IVF would be our only option. Nearly a decade ago, Ashley had what was supposed to be a reversible tubal ligation, after having two children in a previous relationship. Although it was successful, she was back in the hospital in months with ovarian cysts, four surgeries and two … Continue reading
