Charged graphene gives DNA a stage to perform molecular gymnastics

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

When Illinois researchers set out to investigate a method to control how DNA moves through a tiny sequencing device, they did not know they were about to witness a display of molecular gymnastics. Fast, accurate and affordable DNA sequencing is the first step toward personalized medicine. Threading a DNA molecule through a tiny hole, called a nanopore, in a sheet of graphene allows researchers to read the DNA sequence; however, they have limited control over how fast the DNA moves through the pore. In a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, University of Illinois physics professor Aleksei Aksimentiev and graduate student Manish Shankla applied an electric charge to the graphene sheet, hoping that the DNA would react to the charge in a way that would let them control its movement down to each individual link, or nucleotide, in the DNA chain. "Ideally, you would want to step the DNA through the nanopore one nucleotide at a time," said Aksimentiev. "Take a measurement and then have another nucleotide in the sensing hole. That's the goal, and it hasn't been realized yet. We show that, to some degree, we can control the process by charging the graphene." The researchers found … Continue reading

Faster DNA analysis with S’pore product

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

Rachel Boon The Straits Times Publication Date : 15-10-2014 A Singaporehome-grown biomedical instrumentation company is launching its first product, which it claims can analyse DNA much more quickly than rivals'. The product, which will be used in laboratories for research, is set to be unveiled on a global platform in the United States later this month. The firm, JN Medsys, has developed a system that performs what is known as digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid. The new product, known as the Clarity digital PCR system, will be launched at an industry exhibition event run by the American Society of Human Genetics in San Diego from this Sunday to Tuesday. The firm will join more than 250 exhibiting companies there. JN Medsys chief executive Johnson Ng told The Straits Times: "We will use that platform to launch the product and hope to start shipping by next year, and we are ready to launch and compete with the big players in a growing market." Playing on Crosbys line a new perk for Penguins winger Patric Hornqvist

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

Chemistry tends to materialize at an accelerated pace when Sidney Crosby is your center. Patric Hornqvist is relishing that phenomenon while busting out of the gate this season. Two games into his Penguins career, he has two goals, two assists and a team-high 13 shots on goal as part of the teams top line with Crosby and Chris Kunitz. He feels like he won the lottery. Oh yeah, for sure. Playing with Sid makes it easier out there, said Hornqvist, a winger acquired in the trade with Nashville for James Neal in the summer. Hes one of the best players in the world. He can make things happen from nothing. Hes so strong on the puck, and you just have to skate a lot and try to get open when you play with him. To put it politely, Hornqvist never had skated on a line with a center near the caliber of Crosby in the NHL season. That excludes his short stint with Henrik Zetterberg for Team Sweden last winter at the Olympics. Still, he has been a 20-goal scorer in his four seasons in the NHL, with a reputation as a menacing net-front presence with a knack for scoring … Continue reading
