The Anatomy of a Social CEO

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

For the longest time, I believed that certain people were inherently more important than others think Einstein or Gandhi but lately my viewpoint has changed. Now Im convinced that everyone in society, just as everyone on a team, really does matter equally. All people have their own strengths and weaknesses, and each person contributes to the group in their own unique ways. This insight has inspired me to become what I call a Social CEO, but more on that topic in a moment. First, lets consider the analogy of the human body. We often compare our leaders to the head or heart of an organization, and that comparison makes a lot of sense. After all, the brain controls our motor functions, and the heart keeps all the other systems working by circulating blood and oxygen. However, we tend to forget that other essential body parts are just as important. We cannot afford to have our lungs or liver or nervous system give out, even for a short period of time. What if our spine and muscles suddenly stopped working? The brain and heart would be out of luck. This realization about our anatomy has completely altered my thinking about leadership. … Continue reading

Stem Cell Therapy For ALS Gets FDA's Fast Track Designation

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

By C. Rajan, contributing writer The U.S. FDA has just granted BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics novel stem cell therapy, NurOwn, Fast Track status for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the company announced via press release. "We are pleased that the FDA has granted Fast Track status for NurOwn as this will allow us greater and more frequent dialogue with the Agency as we continue the development of this ground-breaking cell therapy for the treatment of ALS," said Tony Fiorino, MD, PhD, CEO of BrainStorm. "We expect Fast Track designation, which recognizes the potential of NurOwn as to address an unmet medical need in ALS, to help speed and improve our development program." Israeli biotech company BrainStorm is developing novel adult stem cell technologies for neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS. The company licensed the exclusive rights to the NurOwn technology from Ramot, the technology transfer company of Tel Aviv University. NurOwn is a personalized stem cell product made from autologous mesenchymal stem cells. These adult stem cells are obtained from the patients bone marrow and are induced to secrete neurotrophic factors, which are growth factors that can stimulate the survival and maintenance of neurons that degenerate in neurologic disorders. NurOwn … Continue reading

Prosensa Starts Rolling NDA Submission for Drisapersen – Analyst Blog

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

Prosensa Holding N.V. ( RNA ) announced that it has initiated the process of rolling submission of a new drug application (NDA) to the FDA for its lead candidate, drisapersen, for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Drisapersen has Breakthrough Therapy Designation in the U.S. Moreover, the fast track status for drisapersen has made Prosensa eligible for making a rolling NDA submission for the candidate. According to Prosensa, DMD is a severely debilitating childhood neuromuscular disease affecting up to 1 infant in 3,500 live male births. This disease can also affect the respiratory and cardiac muscles, causing most patients to die in their early adulthood. No therapy has yet been approved in this indication. Currently, Prosensa has six DMD candidates in its pipeline, drisapersen being the most advanced one. Notably, all these candidates have orphan drug status in the U.S. and the EU. We note that Prosensa had previously completed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III study (results announced in Sep 2013) on drisapersen for DMD. However, the candidate had failed to meet the primary endpoint in this study. The company started re-dosing patients in Sep 2014. Meanwhile, Prosensa is making the rolling submission of the NDA for drisapersen … Continue reading

Three Studies Shed New Light on the Effectiveness of Cannabis in Epilepsy

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise West Hartford, Conn., October 14, 2014 In advance of the American Epilepsy Societys (AES) Annual Meeting in December, the organization has offered highlights of groundbreaking research being studied at a number of institutions regarding the effectiveness of cannibidiol (CBD) and its derivatives as a viable treatment for people with epilepsy. The first of three studies (Abstract#2016808) to be presented in full at the Annual Meeting is from Colorado, where much of the nations attention has been captured by issues surrounding cannabis. The physicians and researchers at Childrens Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado have a unique perspective on CBD given the large number of cases they have treated. In addition to the many children already in their care, these professionals are now caring for many of the patients who have ventured to Colorado in search of cannabis treatment. Dr. Kevin Chapman, associate professor of pediatrics and neurology at the University of Colorado, and his colleagues conducted a retrospective review of the 58 children and adolescents (average age of 7) who had catastrophic forms of epilepsy and were receiving artisanal oral cannabis extracts when they came under the care of the hospital-based … Continue reading
