Stem Cell Therapy For ALS Gets FDA’s Fast Track Designation

Posted: Published on October 14th, 2014

By C. Rajan, contributing writer The U.S. FDA has just granted BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics novel stem cell therapy, NurOwn, Fast Track status for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the company announced via press release. "We are pleased that the FDA has granted Fast Track status for NurOwn as this will allow us greater and more frequent dialogue with the Agency as we continue the development of this ground-breaking cell therapy for the treatment of ALS," said Tony Fiorino, MD, PhD, CEO of BrainStorm. "We expect Fast Track designation, which recognizes the potential of NurOwn as to address an unmet medical need in ALS, to help speed and improve our development program." Israeli biotech company BrainStorm is developing novel adult stem cell technologies for neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS. The company licensed the exclusive rights to the NurOwn technology from Ramot, the technology transfer company of Tel Aviv University. NurOwn is a personalized stem cell product made from autologous mesenchymal stem cells. These adult stem cells are obtained from the patients bone marrow and are induced to secrete neurotrophic factors, which are growth factors that can stimulate the survival and maintenance of neurons that degenerate in neurologic disorders. NurOwn … Continue reading

One MS patient’s ‘starting line’ for stem cell therapy

Posted: Published on October 14th, 2014

By Richard M. Cohen image courtesy Richard Cohen I am one of twenty struggling every day with multiple sclerosis to be included in an innovative, phase one stem cell clinical trial at the Tisch MS Research Center of New York. Now theres a mouthful. Please let me explain. Many of us read tidbits about cell therapy and think it simply is space-age medicine that will be launched in the future. In fact, we are at the starting line now, and the race has begun. A phase one trial tests safety. The group is small, and all are treated with the real thing. No placebos, sugar pills. The trial tests autologous cells, which mean our own. That eliminates rejection and alters risk. No new medical procedure comes risk-free, but the dangers are minimal. The stem cells are pulled from bone marrow harvested from our breast bones. Sounds hideous. It is not. In this trial, the stem cells are infused directly into the spinal column. Nope. Not painful at all. Then we watch and wait. Results, if there are to be any, can take many months to show themselves. This particular procedure has never been used before. I was the first in … Continue reading

How Genes Affect Our Caffeine Intake

Posted: Published on October 14th, 2014

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 14, 2014 According to a new study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry and reported on by Bloomberg on October 7, 2014, the way caffeine affects a person is largely determined by their genetic makeup. This study found six genetic variants in particular that account for this. We have known for some time that caffeine affects certain people quite differently than others, said Dr. Bereliani, founder of the Beverly Hills Institute for Cardiology and Preventive Medicine. What this study helps us understand is why these differences occur. While some people experience benefits such as improved memory and an increase in energy after consuming caffeine, others experience nervousness, anxiety, and gastrointestinal problems. This study looked at over 120,000 coffee drinkers. In doing so it found that two of these genes were related to the metabolic effects of caffeine, two were related to the psychoactive effects, and the other two were related to lipid and glucose metabolism. This discovery helps us explain a small but significant portion of our coffee-drinking behavior, said Dr. Bereliani. In the future, research like this might even be able to help us better determine who can benefit the most from caffeine and … Continue reading

Biology, Deceit & Security in the Internet of Things

Posted: Published on October 14th, 2014

Over the last several months, Jim Hogan and I have been kicking around ideas with regard to the issue of security in the Internet of Things (IoT). This all began with an off-hand comment I made at a Hogan panel at DAC. The idea is that some non-traditional approaches to security at the system-level -- particularly based on biological analogies -- should become relevant. This topic surfaces from time to time (there was even a blog about it last year in EETimes), but rarely seems to go very deep. We thought it was time to drop down a level and to delve into why this should be relevant to the IoT and how the mechanics might work. We hope you find it interesting. Alternative security strategies Security techniques in the Internet have largely drawn inspiration from physical security -- keys, firewalls, trusted zones, and more. However, there are other possible sources of inspiration, biology being an obvious example. We routinely talk of viruses, but that analogy extends only to the concept of a malicious attacker and the spread of infection, not so much to methods of defense. This is unfortunate, because the ability of living organisms to defend against infection … Continue reading
