Bioinformatics (journal) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2014

Bioinformatics is a biweekly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research and software in computational biology. It is the official journal of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), together with PLOS Computational Biology. Authors can pay extra for open access and are allowed to self-archive after 1 year. The journal was established as Computer Applications in the Biosciences (CABIOS) in 1985. The founding editor-in-chief was Robert J. Beynon.[1] In 1998, the journal obtained its current name and established an online version of the journal.[2][3] It is published by Oxford University Press and, as of 2014, the editors-in-chief are Alfonso Valencia and Janet Kelso.[4] Previous editors include Chris Sander, Gary Stormo, Christos Ouzounis, Martin Bishop, and Alex Bateman. In 2014, these five editors were appointed the first Honorary Editors of Bioinformatics.[5] According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2013 impact factor of 4.621.[6] From 1998 to 2004, Bioinformatics was the official journal of the ISCB. In 2004, as many ISCB members had institutional subscriptions to Bioinformatics, ISCB decided not to renew its contract with the journal.[7][8] As of 2005, PLOS Computational Biology became the official ISCB journal.[7] In January 2009 Bioinformatics again became an official journal of the ISCB, … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy Star Jesse Williams Heads To Ferguson October

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2014

by Britt Julious 13 hours ago Some celebrities simply tweet about what moves them, while others, like Greys Anatomy star Jesse Williams, get right on the front lines. Jesse, along with members of the Question Bridge: Black Males video project team, joined protesters from across the country who traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, this weekend for #FergusonOctober, which seeks justice for the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown and victims of police brutality like him. Well be archiving the thoughts and concerns of the people and recording Black males asking and answering the questions that matter to them, Jesse said in a Tumblr post on October 8. You can follow Jesse as he documents his time in St. Louis on his Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram accounts. The shooting of Brown, an unarmed young black man, in Ferguson, Missouri, sparked demonstrations, protests, vigils and rallies across the country in August and September calling attention to acts of police brutality. This weekends protests also came on the heels of another controversial shooting death of an 18-year-old black man, Vonderrit Myers, Jr. of St. Louis. Those who follow Jesse on social media (his Tumblr is a MUST!) should not be surprised by his trip … Continue reading

Body contouring after bariatric surgery helps obese patients keep weight off

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2014

Patients who have plastic surgery to reshape their bodies after bariatric procedures are able to maintain "significantly greater" weight loss than those who do not have surgery, according to a new study by Henry Ford Hospital researchers. "As plastic and reconstructive surgeons, we are encouraged by the idea that improved body image can translate into better long-term maintenance of a healthier weight, and possibly a better quality of life for our patients," says Donna Tepper, M.D., a Henry Ford plastic surgeon and senior author of the study. Study results will be presented Oct. 11 at the annual conference of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Chicago. Used to help obese patients lose weight, bariatric surgery includes several types of procedures that limit the amount of food the stomach can hold, including removal of a portion of the stomach or constricting it with a gastric band. Such weight loss can be significant, and result in a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease. "Bariatric surgery has a measurably significant positive impact on patient illness and death," Dr. Tepper says. "However, even with the technical and safety advancements we've seen in these procedures, their long-term success may still be limited by … Continue reading

Cell therapy – Institute of Cell Therapy – …

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2014

About cell therapy Cell therapy is a new official direction in medicine, based on the use of regenerative potential of the adult stem cells, aimed at the treatment of a variety of serious diseases, rehabilitation of patients after injuries and fighting with the premature signs of aging. Stem cells are also considered to be the promising biological material for the creation of the prosthetic heart valves, blood vessels, trachea, they are also used as the unique biofiller for the reconstitution of bone defects and other purposes of the plastic and reconstructive surgery. The scientists explain the regenerative mechanism of action of stem cells both by their ability to transform into the cells of blood, liver, myocardium, bone, cartilage or nervous tissue and thus restore damaged organs and also by the reovery of the functional activity of the other cells (through the so-called paracrine type) by means of the production of a variety of growth factors. For clinical purposes, in most cases stem cells are obtained from the bone marrow and cord blood, it is also known that the amount of stem cells, sufficient for treatment, can be isolated from the peripheral blood of an adult person, but after pre-stimulation of … Continue reading

Stem-Cell Researchers Make Breakthrough in Type 1 Diabetes Treatment

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2014

TIME Health Research Stem-Cell Researchers Make Breakthrough in Type 1 Diabetes Treatment "We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line" Researchers have made a major breakthrough in finding a treatment for type 1 diabetes, Harvard University announced Thursday. For the first time, scientists were able to create insulin-producing beta cells using human embryonic stem cells, at a volume required for cell transplantation and pharmaceutical use. Type 1 is the variety of the metabolic disease that one is born withan autoimmune condition in which the body destroys the beta cells that produce insulin, a hormone that regulates glucose and helps the body process sugar. We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line, said Doug Melton, who led the research and who has worked toward finding a cure for diabetes since his son was diagnosed as an infant 23 years ago. That final step is finding a way to protect the 150 million beta cells needed to for transplant in the treatment of each patient from their immune systems, which automatically attack those cells. Melton is working with other researchers to develop a device for such protection. Tests of a device in mice have … Continue reading
