'Grey's Anatomy' recap: 'Got to Be Real'

Posted: Published on October 11th, 2014

DREAM TEAM? Owen brings Callie (and her invention of a robotic leg) to a veterans hospital. Mitchell Haaseth/ABC Grey's Anatomy has never been a show in need of a villain. Rather, the villain of this story is simply life and the way that it screws us over on a daily basis. The villain is heartbreak. The villain is bad luck. The villain is coincidence. And occasionally, the villain is tequila. Well, that is, when it isn't busy being the hero. In other words, the villain is what puts the hospital's victims at risk, and it's what keeps our doctors going day in and day out. It's the thing that killed Denny and the reason Cristina decided to move away. It's not something we can see, and it's not something fans can actively hate, but that's what makes this show work. And yet, this episode seemed to forgetthat. By taking so many of our favorite characters and pitting them against each other, this show is putting viewers in a very strange, very uncomfortable positionthe position of disliking the new girl, or dare I say it, the position of disliking their McDreamy. It's not a position we've been in many times, and … Continue reading

Parents pay tribute to Joshua Cashmore after Blurton teen dies…

Posted: Published on October 11th, 2014

Joshua Cashmore suffered from a muscle-wasting condition. THE parents of a bright teenager have spoken of their anguish after their son died aged 19. Joshua Cashmore suffered from a muscle-wasting condition called Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which left him wheelchair-bound. The youngster was one of the first people in the country to try steroid treatment to help with his condition after being diagnosed with the life-limiting illness. Now his dad Stuart and mum Kelly have paid tribute to their caring and loving son who died on October 2. Stuart, aged 36, of Rothley Green, Blurton, said: Joshua was my best friend and an amazing big brother to his four siblings. He was very bright and was well-liked by his many friends. No one ever had a bad word to say about him. Stuart added that Joshua loved watching all kinds of sports and was a keen supporter of Leicester City Football Club. Fans of the Foxes conducted a round of applause on the 19th minute at the home game against Burnley last Saturday in memory of the former Newcastle College student after supporters organised a Facebook campaign. And Stuart said many friends of Joshua had contacted the family to pay tribute … Continue reading

Wow of the Week: Son of Superman talks about paralysis treatment clinial trial

Posted: Published on October 11th, 2014

Matthew Reeve lost his father Christopher Reeve, who became well-known for his portrayal of Superman, about 10 years ago due to secondary complications from paralysis, caused by a horse riding accident. His family foundation Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is sponsoring a clinical trial for a device to restore movement in paralyzed patients by sending an electrical current to the spinal cord. He spoke with New Scientist about some early successes epidural stimulation has had on four patients and its interest in recruiting 36 more patients with spinal cord injuries to undergo the paralysis treatment. Heres how it works. The 16-electrode stimulator is implanted in the same place on each patients spine, no matter which location the spinal cord was severed. The user applies a continuous electrical current at varying frequencies and intensities to specific regions in the lower spinal cord where there are dense bundles of nerves that control the hips, knees, ankles and toes. The effect of the device is to mimic signals that would normally be transmitted by the brain to artificially rekindle movement in those regions, Reeve said. So far the results for the paralysis treatment sound impressive. The four adults treated with the implant, each … Continue reading

Parental misconceptions about concussions could hinder treatment, recovery

Posted: Published on October 11th, 2014

With football season in full swing, there's no shortage of talk about young players -- from high school down to the pee wee levels -- suffering from concussions. Yet many parents may lack knowledge about this mild traumatic brain injury, according to two studies to be presented Oct. 10 at a pre-conference symposium on pediatric sports medicine at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition in San Diego. Nearly 175,000 children are treated in U.S. emergency rooms each year for concussions due to sports-related activities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Parental knowledge of the signs and symptoms of concussion and recognizing that this is a brain injury is important to ensure children are diagnosed in a timely manner and get appropriate treatment. Two separate studies looked at parents' knowledge of concussion and common misconceptions. They will be presented as part of the Peds21 symposium, "1, 2, 3, Go! Sports in the World of Pediatrics -- Playing it Safe and Making it Fun!" in the San Diego Convention Center. For the first abstract, titled "Parental Knowledge of Concussion," 511 parents of children ages 5-18 years who sought care at a pediatric emergency department within … Continue reading
