Greys Anatomy': Dr. Webber Finally Confronts Maggie

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2014

The drama-filled staff ofGrey Sloan Memorial Hospital are back and we couldnt be more excited ShonaRhimes youve done it again. Thank you for another intense episode! The Oct. 9th episode ofGreys Anatomydid notdisappoint. It seems that no relationship whether friendly or sexual, is safe.Did we mention a man had a run in with a lumber truck on the highway and lost? Ouch. It was an episode full of intense scenes. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) just cant seem to come to terms thatDr. Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is her sister and decides to ditch work and turn to Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and booze for answers. It seems like most of the characters in Greys find it best to let out all their baggage in the bathroom while their fellow co-worker is butt naked in the shower. Hey, whatever works and we dont mind a little peep show with our drama! But what about the other Grey? Well, things didnt end to well for her either this episode. Ever since Dr. Yang jetted off to live out her dreams, poor Meredith has been left trying to fill the void with a new person. Thats where Alex comes in. He has come to terms … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy Recap: Is Meredith the Worst Roommate Ever? (Yes.)

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2014

Kevin McKidd, Sara Ramirez At the start of this week'sGrey's Anatomy,Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is in full needy mode, interrupting Alex (Justin Chambers) in the shower to tell him about her latest half-sister - and complimenting his junk in the process. (This scene proves that I could never be Meredith's roommate, let alone her person.) While hiding from the shower buddies, a jealous Jo (Camilla Luddington) tells Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) that she's missing Cristina. Who agrees with her? [A quick Cristina tangent: I really applaud the way the show is handling Cristina's exit with random shout-outs and references. Nothing worse than a show that writes out a character, and their friends and loved ones adopt a policy of never speaking of them again.] Elsewhere, as Derek (Patrick Dempsey)and Amelia's (Caterina Scorsone) sibling rivalry infiltrates the workplace, they're not the only ones who are screaming at each other in the hallway. Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) are stressed to the max dealing with new patients from the military, including one soldier who is hoping to get a "robot leg" from Callie. She wants to reject him because he isn't a good candidate for a robotic leg, but Owen is reverting … Continue reading

Fully Funded Robot Legs: Owen talks up Callie to a group of wounded warriors, making her out to be a miracle healer. But when the first patient is made extravagant promises by Owen, Callie needs to disqualify him due to a shabby amputation. While it is not the patients fault, Owen takes the failure personally and unleashes his anger on Callie in front of the entire floor. Avery saunters into Callies lab to groan about playing hall monitor when he could be performing surgery. When … Continue reading

Anatomy of an Advanced Persistent Threat Attack

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2014

What can banks learn from recent APT attacks on the retail industry? The previous post of this blog series discussed the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) warning about imminent, advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks on ATMs. Specifically, criminals might hack into banks web-based, ATM management systems, eliminate cash withdrawal limits imposed on the ATMs and thereby steal all the cash stored in the ATMs. Unlike the cybercrimes that banks have dealt with so far -- including numerous Trojans, DDoS attacks, and ATM skimming -- the attack that the FFIEC is warning about is far more advanced and very similar to the ongoing attacks on the retail industry. So in this post, well dissect recent APT attacks on the retail industry, which will yield valuable lessons and help us build better defense strategies against the cyberage Pancho Villas and John Dillingers. [JPMorgan Chase Breach Impacts 76 Million Consumers] Anatomy of an advanced persistent threat attackIn an APT attack, the intruders break into a network, implant advanced malware, and sustain an indiscernible presence until they are able to siphon off the targeted data. Typically, an APT involves the following phases: Target selection. Some attackers choose a victim first and research that … Continue reading

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells & Media

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2014

Bone marrow contains a population of rare progenitor cells known as Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) capable of replication as undifferentiated cells or differentiating into bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, tendon and marrow stroma. Due to the nature of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), they can play a vital role in several different types of research applications including cell differentiation and gene regulation, gene therapy and transplantation, and cell-based screening assays in drug discovery. Cell Differentiation and Gene RegulationThe commitment of MSCs to a particular lineage is regulated by various signals from the cells' environment. Thus, there are many entry points into the process which can be exploited by researchers to help elucidate gene regulation and/or function. siRNA can be used to decrease the expression of a protein and allow one to better determine the function of the protein and pathways involved. Using stem cells allows one to study protein function and regulation at different stages in differentiation. Gene Therapy and Transplantation Mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to treat a wide range of diseases. Compared to other types of stem cells, MSCs have the ability to take up and keep introduced genes, a phenomenon that could be exploited for the delivery of … Continue reading

New testing added to IVF Treatment Helps Local Families

Posted: Published on October 9th, 2014

More couples than ever before are turning to an alternative way to get pregnant. While the numbers speak to the success of in vitro fertilization; some couples need a little extra help. A new test promises to do just that. For newlyweds David and Kelly Edwards, their miracle of life was cut short way too soon. "We tried naturally, got pregnant, and lost the baby at 10 weeks," said Kelly Edwards. Kelly knew trying again would be difficult -- all because of her genes. "She was a carrier essentially of a chromosome abnormality called a translocation," said Dr. Mark Trolice, M.D. Dr. Trolice is the director of Fertility Care in Winter Park. He said the diagnosis means the embryo's chromosomes would be unbalanced -- a major cause of repeated miscarriages for many women. "I began wondering if I would ever be able to have children," said Kelly Edwards. Dr. Trolice recommended a developing technology called Pre-Implantation Genetic screening or PGS. In conjunction with in vitro fertilization, it allows doctors to screen embryos for any potential issues, and only implant the most viable embryos. "The error rate is actually less than one-percent," said Dr. Trolice. Still, Kelly expected the worse. Read … Continue reading

Multiple neurodevelopmental disorders have a common molecular cause

Posted: Published on October 9th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 9-Oct-2014 Contact: Mary Beth O'Leary moleary@cell.com 617-397-2802 Cell Press @CellPressNews Neurodevelopmental disorders such as Down syndrome and autism-spectrum disorder can have profound, lifelong effects on learning and memory, but relatively little is known about the molecular pathways affected by these diseases. A study published by Cell Press October 9th in the American Journal of Human Genetics shows that neurodevelopmental disorders caused by distinct genetic mutations produce similar molecular effects in cells, suggesting that a one-size-fits-all therapeutic approach could be effective for conditions ranging from seizures to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. "Neurodevelopmental disorders are rare, meaning trying to treat them is not efficient," says senior study author Carl Ernst of McGill University. "Once we fully define the major common pathways involved, targeting these pathways for treatment becomes a viable option that can affect the largest number of people." A large fraction of neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with variation in specific genes, but the genetic factors responsible for these diseases are very complex. For example, whereas common variants in the same gene have been associated with two or more different disorders, mutations in many different genes can lead to similar diseases. As a result, it has not been clear whether … Continue reading
