BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics Inc. (BCLI: Quote) has secured FDA's Fast Track product designation for its core technology, NurOwn, which is currently being studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II clinical trial in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients. The NurOwn technology processes adult human mesenchymal stem cells that are present in bone marrow and are capable of self-renewal as well as differentiation into many other cell types. BCLI closed Tuesday's trading at $3.98, up 2.84%. OXiGENE Inc. (OXGN: Quote) has enrolled the first patient in a phase 1b/2 clinical study that will evaluate its drug candidate Fosbretabulin in combination with GlaxoSmithKline PLC's (GSK) approved cancer medication Votrient in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. The study is estimated to enroll up to 128 patients at sites in the United Kingdom. The primary endpoint is progression-free survival, and secondary endpoints include safety, overall survival, objective response rate and relevant biomarkers. OXGN closed Tuesday's trading 6.88% higher at $2.33. Medgenics Inc. (MDGN: Quote) is all set to present initial data from its ongoing phase 1/2 clinical trial of MDGN-201 at the 22nd Annual Congress of the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy being held in The Hague, Netherlands from October 23rd-26th, 2014. BrainStorm : FDA Grants Fast Track Designation To NurOwn For Treatment Of ALS

By RTT News, October 07, 2014, 07:19:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics Inc. ( BCLI ), a developer of adult stem cell technologies for neurodegenerative diseases, said that the United States Food and Drug Administration or FDA has designated NurOwn as a Fast Track product for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease). NurOwn consists of autologous mesenchymal stem cells that have been induced to secrete neurotrophic factors, and is currently being studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 clinical trial in ALS patients. "We are pleased that the FDA has granted Fast Track status for NurOwn as this will allow us greater and more frequent dialogue with the Agency as we continue the development of this ground-breaking cell therapy for the treatment of ALS," said Tony Fiorino, Chief Executive Officer of BrainStorm. Councillors vote to halve free IVF treatment available to Black Country couples

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2014

Sandwell councillors have voted to halve the number of free IVF cycles available on the NHS in the Black Country. Just one free cycle will now be offered in Sandwell, bringing the area into line with Birmingham. Councillors voted to impose the cut, to come into force in May 2016, after health chiefs said it was not a priority. That guidance contradicted research which showed almost half of patients, the public and health professionals wanted cycle numbers increased rather than reduced. Andrew Willians, of the Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group, said: The guidance we have been given is that we should not be committing to more than one cycle. We should prioritise supporting people returning from hospital to live independently. It is the right thing to do. But Coun Bob Lloyd (Lab, Wednesbury South), an opponent of the cuts proposal, told a Sandwell Council health scrutiny meeting: I think we should be raising the standard to Birmingham, not lowering it. When women were getting paid less than men, we didnt decide to pay men less we raised the womans wage. It is giving less to more. Researchers develop reproducibility score for SNPs associated with human disease in GWAS

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 8-Oct-2014 Contact: Robin Dutcher robin.Dutcher@hitchcock.org 603-653-9056 The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth Lebanon, NH, 10/8/14 To reduce false positives when identifying genetic variations associated with human disease through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), Dartmouth researchers have identified nine traits that are not dependent on P values to predict single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) reproducibility as reported in Human Genetics on October 2, 2014. Reproducibility rates of SNPs based solely on P values is low. Dartmouth authors' analysis of GWAS studies published in Nature Genetics showed a 1-5 percent replication rate. "It is important to improve our ability to select SNPs for validation using a formalized process. In this paper, we propose a combination of traits that improve replication success," said first author Ivan P. Gorlov, PhD, DSC, associate professor of Community and Family Medicine, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. The team assigned a value of zero or one to nine different predictors. To compute the Replication Score (RS), one totals the individual scores for all significant predictors. The predictors include "Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man" (OMIM, a list of genetically caused diseases), receptors, kinases, growth factors, transcription factors, tissue specific, plasma membrane localization, nuclear localization and conversation … Continue reading

How Iceland’s Genealogy Obsession Leads to Scientific Breakthroughs

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2014

Icelanders love keeping track of how they're related, which has made them "the world champions of human genetics. A commercial for an Icelandic phone company from a few years ago depicted a couple waking up after a one-night stand. They both pick up their smart phones. They both log into a family-tree website, Islendingabok. And thats where things get awkward. There are only 320,000 people who live in Iceland, and most are descended from a small clan of Celtic and Viking settlers. Thus, many Icelanders are distant (or close) relatives. Sometimes too close. The desire to avoid unwitting incestuous pairings at one point even spawned an app, created by a group of engineering students at the University of Iceland, that allows its users to bump their phones together to determine whether they share a common ancestor. (Tag line: Bump in the app before you bump in bed.") Concerns about wading into the shallow end of the gene pool are just a small part of the Icelandic obsession with genealogy. As Iva Skoch explained in Global Post, when two Icelanders meet, the first question is usually, "Hverra manna ert bu?" (Who are your people?) Bookstores are stocked with thick volumes on … Continue reading
