Cop rescues special need girl's dog after hit-and-run

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

When Pierce County Detective Ryan Salmon stopped to investigate a crowd on a Tacoma street corner, the sight of a girl in a wheelchair with her special needs dog at her feet really got his attention. Faith Cloud is confined to a wheelchair and cannot speak because she was born with cerebral palsy. Her service dog, Spice, had just been hit by a silver car that fled, leaving Spice behind with multiple hip and leg fractures. Salmon says he "just did the right thing. It wasn't about being a cop; it was about having compassion for this girl and her dog." Salmon helped Faith's mother, Tonya, and a friend move Spice up into his unmarked police car for a trip to a veterinary hospital. More popular and trending stories Later that day, when Salmon called to check up on Spice, he learned that Tonya could not afford the X-rays and treatment that Spice needed. So, again, Salmon "just did the right thing" for Faith, Spice, and Tonya and told the vet to send him the $200 bill for the treatment. Tonya Cloud said she couldn't believe a total stranger would do something so wonderful for her daughter and her dog. She … Continue reading

Brain injury charity questions Chelsea's treatment of Courtois' head injury

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

Headway, the brain injury charity, has questioned the application of the Premier Leagues regulations over head injuries after Thibaut Courtois played on during Chelseas 2-0 Premier League win over Arsenal yesterday. Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois continued after requiring treatment for a head-knock following a collision with Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, before being replaced after further treatment and departing Stamford Bridge for precautionary scans in hospital. Headway chief executive Peter McCabe said on the charitys website: The new rules introduced this season were designed to ensure no risks to players health were taken. They clearly state that If there is any suspicion of the player having sustained a concussion, they must be removed from the field of play, and not allowed to return. This incident calls into question whether these rules are working effectively. It is hard to understand how a concussion was not suspected following the sickening clash. Courtois was taken off only after liquid appeared to be coming from his ear. McCabe acknowledged the difficulty of making an assessment from television, but questioned why a safety-first approach was not applied. He added: Bleeding from one or both ears is one of the symptoms to look out for that requires an … Continue reading

$17M award aims to improve clinical trials for traumatic brain injury

An unprecedented, public-private partnership funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) is being launched to drive the development of better-run clinical trials and may lead to the first successful treatments for traumatic brain injury, a condition affecting not only athletes and soldiers, but also millions among the general public, ranging from youngsters to elders. Under the partnership, officially launched Oct. 1 with a $17 million, five-year award from the DoD, the research team, representing many universities, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), companies and philanthropies, will examine data from thousands of patients in order to identify effective measures of brain injury and recovery, using biomarkers from blood, new imaging equipment and software, and other tools. Each year more than 2.5 million people in the U.S. seek medical care for traumatic brain injuries that arise when blows to the body or nearby explosions cause the brain to collide with the inside of the skull. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an estimated 2 percent of the U.S. population now lives with TBI-caused disabilities, at an annual cost of about $77 billion. Cape Town - British businessman Shrien Dewani had hormone problems and underwent testosterone replacement therapy, the Western Cape High Court heard on Monday. "I decided to undergo this treatment despite the side-effects. Having my own family was important to me," he explained in a plea document. Dewani has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife Anni in Cape Town in 2010, and other related charges. An endocrinologist told him in 2009 that he had abnormally low levels of the hormone and may have trouble reproducing. He was warned of the side-effects, including the risk of blood clots, sleep apnoea, breast enlargement, weight gain, and acne. "I discussed my problem with Anni as I knew that she wanted children as well." Earlier, it was revealed he was bisexual and had sexual interactions with both men and women. "My sexual interactions with males were mostly physical experiences or e-mail chats with people I met online or in clubs," his lawyer Francois van Zyl said, reading out Dewani's plea explanation in court.
