DNA will end Shekaus death controversy Expert

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

A security analyst, Ben Okezie, has advised the military authorities to carry out a deoxyribo nucleic acid testing or profiling on the remains of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, in order to put an end to the controversy surrounding his demise. He described as embarrassing the claims by the military and counter-claims by the Boko Haram sect on Shekau. The military had claimed to have killed Shekau in 2013 and a terrorist who had been impersonating the deceased insurgent last week in Konduga, Borno State. But another impostor, in a video released online, dismissed the Armys claims. The man claiming to be Shekau said he was still alive, adding that the missing military jet was shot down by his group. But Okezie, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Monday, described as embarrassing the claims by the military that it had killed Shekau three times, noting that the only way to end the matter was to carry out a DNA profiling on his body, trace his family members and ask them to identify him. The DNA profiling (or genetic fingerprinting) is a technique employed by forensic scientists to assist in the identification of individuals by their respective DNA material that … Continue reading

Accused Murderer’s DNA Found In Slain West Hartford Bank Teller’s Car

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

HARTFORD -- DNA from accused murderer Carl "Hood" Small was found in the SUV of slain bank teller Christopher Donato, a forensic scientist testified Monday. Nicholas Yang, a forensic science examiner at the state police crime lab, said Small is a contributor to the DNA found in blood on the SUV's steering wheel and driver's side door. The 2000 Chevy Blazer was among the things missing when Donato, 30, was found fatally stabbed in his city apartment near the West Hartford line on June 18, 2012. It later was found parked near a Vine Street apartment in the city's North End where Small, of Bloomfield, used to stay. Monday was the fourth day of testimony in Superior Court. The trial is expected to wrap up this week. Yang was one of a long line of forensic scientists to testify about evidence found in Donato's apartment, his SUV and in the Vine Street apartment. He testified that Small, 34, cannot be eliminated as a possible contributor to DNA found on the handle of a mop that police said was used in an attempt to clean up the bloody scene. But Yang was unable to conclude that Small's DNA was in several … Continue reading

Chemistry in Ultra HD shows science like you’ve never seen it

Discover dancing fluorescent droplets, crystal gardens and watery clouds of chemicals in this new video compilation from BeautifulChemistry.net. Scientists call it CoCl2 in Na2SiO3 Solution. You'll likely just call it "Awesome!" BeautifulChemistry.org Chemistry was always the most visually appealing of the sciences I studied in school. There were all those amazing colors, plus smoke, bubbles and best of all, fire! Turns out, I'm not the only one who found chemistry to be attractive. A collaboration between the Institute of Advanced Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China and Tsinghua University Press has led to the formation of BeautifulChemistry.net, a site whose goal is "to bring the beauty of chemistry to the general public through digital media and technology." To start on the path, the creators "used a 4K UltraHD camera and special lenses to capture chemical reactions in astonishing detail without the distraction of beakers and test tubes." Those reactions are compiled in the following video and are broken into six different categories. You might not understand exactly what the chemical symbols mean in each video, but it helps to get Beautiful Chemistry's take on each category, which we've included below. Or, you can just enjoy the … Continue reading

Scientists find possible new therapy for rare lung disease in children

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

Researchers at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center have discovered a new gene and cell therapy that could treat a rare lung disease in children. In the study, published in the journal Nature, researchers found that transplanting pulmonary macrophages immune cells into the lungs of mice corrected hereditary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (hPAP). The lung disease is caused by a build-up of surfactant, an oily substance in the air sacs of the lungs, which results in reduced lung function and eventually failure. The condition is the opposite of a common condition in premature babies, whose lungs are at a higher risk of collapsing because their air sacs will not stay open. Children with hPAP, on the other hand, have such high levels of surfactants that the childrens air sacs overinflate, and they drown internally as a result. Between 2,000 and 3,000 children in the U.S. have hPAP, senior study author Bruce Trapnell, a physician in the division of neonatology and pulmonary biology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, told FoxNews.com. The only available therapy for the rare disease whole-lung lavage is a difficult procedure thats invasive, requires anesthesia and involves mechanical ventilation, Trapnell said. For the surgery, doctors must attach a breathing … Continue reading

Nissen Urges Prompt Revision Of Cardiovascular Guidelines

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

Sparked by a new study that once again finds serious flaws in the cardiovascular risk calculator at the heart of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association cardiovascular guidelines, Steve Nissen states that the ACC and AHA should promptly revise the guidelines to address the criticisms offered by independent authorities. The CV risk calculator is a key component of the guidelines, since people are generally considered candidates for statins if they have a10-year estimated risk of CV disease of 7.5% or higher according to the equations used by the calculator. In a study published inJAMA Internal Medicine,Nancy Cook and Paul Ridker, analyzing data from the Womens Health Study, offer fresh evidence that the cardiovascular risk calculator used in the ACC/AHA cholesterol guideline is flawed. They found that the predicted rate of cardiovascular disease using the guideline calculator was significantly higher than the actual observed rate in the trial. They considered and ruled out several alternative explanations for the discrepancy, including underascertainment of events and the increased use of statins and revascularization procedures in their population. Noting that there have been at least seven studies now finding similar flaws in the CV risk calculator, they write that recalibration of the pooled data sets … Continue reading
