Biotech company Regeneus under fire for saying AFL approved stem cell treatment, claims made to patients

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2014

ABC Stem cells A listed company offering stem cell treatments to injured athletes is under fire for talking up the AFL's "approval" of its procedure and allegedly misleading the stock exchange. In August, Sydney-based biotech company Regeneus, which raised $12 million by listing on the stock market last year, put out a press release headed "ASX Announcement" which said the AFL "approved" the use of its liposuction-based stem cell procedure for injured players. But the ABC's 7.30 program has obtained a letter of complaint written by a group of Australia's leading stem cell scientists, alleging the company withheld information about its procedure's efficacy in a price-sensitive announcement to the market. Sports physician and stem cell researcher Dr Mark Young is concerned about Regeneus' claims. "I think we're all concerned that patients are being given treatments where there's no evidence of benefit and they're paying an awful lot of money for it," he told 7.30. Regeneus has had much fanfare for its product, which costs $10,000 per treatment. Its announcement said an independent clinical trial had demonstrated the procedure "reduces pain and halts cartilage degeneration in arthritic joints". However, the complaint letter obtained by 7.30 points out the statement left out … Continue reading

French Transparency Commission Recognises Efficacy of Zonegran (zonisamide) Monotherapy

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2014

Hatfield, England (ots/PRNewswire) Transparency advice for Zonegran(R) (zonisamide) monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures, with or without secondary generalisation, in adults with newly diagnosed epilepsy, has been published by the French National Authority for Health (HAS).[1] The Transparency Commission advice awards zonisamide a Medical Benefit (SMR) level of important and an Improvement of Medical Benefit (ASMR) level V. The advice recognises zonisamides level A efficacy rating.[2] Once-daily zonisamide is a second generation anti-epileptic drug (AED) with multiple mechanisms of action and a chemical structure unrelated to any other AEDs.[3] Zonisamide is already available in France as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures, with or without secondary generalisation, in adults over the age of 18.[3] Monotherapy is the optimal treatment approach for newly diagnosed epilepsy, as most people with the condition may be successfully managed with the first or second monotherapy. In comparison with polytherapy, monotherapy also reduces the potential for adverse drug interactions.[4] Zonisamides proven efficacy in the monotherapy setting makes it a welcome addition to doctors epilepsy treatment armamentarium in France, commented Professor Michel Baulac, Head of the Epilepsy department at the Pitie-Salpetrire Hospital, Paris, France. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in … Continue reading

We are committed to evidence-based practices, implementing only those treatments that demonstrate strong scientific support. ASD impairs the ability of a child to learn and develop skills on their own; it occurs more slowly than in typical peers. Research shows the potential for progress for children on the autism spectrum is very good with early intervention. As much as possible, individuals with ASD should be engaged in activities that help to build functional and appropriate skills. In 2001, the National Research Council Report recommended a minimum of 25 hours per week. In 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended 20 hours or more of active engagement in evidence-based interventions. These are the minimum number of hours based on research for young children. No similar data on minimum number of hours for adults is available. At SARRC, number of treatment hours is determined on an individual basis to meet the needs of each person. Interventions supported by the most scientific evidence are based on Applied Behavior Analysis(ABA) and include the following: With effective interventions, family involvement, and community based support, individuals with ASD and their families can live meaningful and productive lives with varying levels of assistance. Quebec's first autism convention opens eyes for parents

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2014

CTV Montreal Published Saturday, October 4, 2014 5:53PM EDT Last Updated Saturday, October 4, 2014 6:43PM EDT Parents whose children have autism spectrum disorder say theyre happy to see so many resources available to them in one place at Quebec's first autism convention in Laval this weekend. Held at the Cosmodome in Laval, the Salon de lAutisme features different services and numerous speakers, including adults with autism. We want people to talk about certain things, because autism is complex, said Brigitte Harrisson, founder of Saccade, an autism spectrum intervention group. Harrisson was diagnosed with autism in her 30s and holds talks to help parents understand their children's behaviour. Also at the convention are devices to help parents, such as a GPS tracking device designed for people with ASD. Tony Fama, president of iLOC Technologies, who came up with the idea after he lost his son in Disney World. I got him back and everything was fine, thank God, but that doesn't work out the same way with a lot of wandering instances. In autism over 50 per cent will end up wandering, said Fama. The convention is the brainchild of Salon de lAutisme president Johanne Leduc, whose two sons were … Continue reading

Lawrence woman discovers undiagnosed brain injury with help of managed care organization

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2014

Photo by Richard Gwin Teressa Harvey, 64, can sit in her Lawrence mobile home and smile nowadays, ever since a case worker with Amerigroup, which operates the state's Medicaid program, last year discovered she had an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury and began getting her treatment for it. "I have a chance to be a new person," Harvey said, winding thread around a dreamcatcher. Photo by Richard Gwin Teressa Harvey, 64, makes a dreamcatcher on a recent day at her Lawrence mobile home. On a recent day, Teressa Harvey welcomed visitors into her Lawrence mobile home. This might not seem like a remarkable occurrence, but for Harvey it was a huge step in her recovery process. A year and a half ago, she would hardly leave the house, had her windows blacked out and certainly wouldn't let anybody inside. She communicated in one of two ways: through crying or explosive anger. She was on a physical-disability waiting list to receive home-based treatment services. But a case worker with Amerigroup, one of the three managed-care organizations that took over operation of the state's Medicaid program in 2013 under KanCare, reached out to Harvey and immediately realized her problems weren't physical in nature: … Continue reading
