Barashs Talk [EvolutionBlog]

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014

University of Washington biology professor David Barash published this op-ed in The New York Times recently. The title: God, Darwin and My College Biology Class. Intriguing! Lets have a look. EVERY year around this time, with the college year starting, I give my students The Talk. It isnt, as you might expect, about sex, but about evolution and religion, and how they get along. More to the point, how they dont. Im a biologist, in fact an evolutionary biologist, although no biologist, and no biology course, can help being evolutionary. My animal behavior class, with 200 undergraduates, is built on a scaffolding of evolutionary biology. And thats where The Talk comes in. Its irresponsible to teach biology without evolution, and yet many students worry about reconciling their beliefs with evolutionary science. Just as many Americans dont grasp the fact that evolution is not merely a theory, but the underpinning of all biological science, a substantial minority of my students are troubled to discover that their beliefs conflict with the course material. Until recently, I had pretty much ignored such discomfort, assuming that it was their problem, not mine. Teaching biology without evolution would be like teaching chemistry without molecules, or … Continue reading

Maggie's Grey's Anatomy Secret Won't Stay Hidden for Long! Kelly McCreary Gives the Scoop

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) has one seriously twisted family tree on Grey's Anatomy. And it's actually crazier than she knows! She even has a half-sister working right alongside her at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and she has no idea! New doc Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is the result of Meredith's mom Ellis (Kate Burton) and former Chief Richard's (James Pickens Jr.) affair, and though Ellis gave Maggie up for adoption as soon as she was born, she turned up at Grey Sloan Memorial in the season 10 finale to learn all about her biological family. But as Maggie quickly realized in the season 11 premiere, Meredith is not at all the "warm and fuzzy" sister she was expecting to bond with, and so she's decided to keep her connection to Meredith a secret to everyone except Richardwho she doesn't realize is her father! VIDEO: Owen still loves Cristina! Grey's Anatomy scoop comes from an unlikely place: Top Chef Duels Yeah, we told you it was twisted. We got McCreary on the line to try and untangle some of the branches of the Grey family tree, and she revealed to us that even though Maggie is determined to keep her family ties … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy's Kelly McCreary: There's a Lot Maggie Doesn't Know

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014

Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) may have arrived at Grey Sloan to find out more about her biological mother, but she's going to get more than she could ever bargain for this season on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. After arriving as a new cardio doc to fill the void created by Cristina's (Sandra Oh) departure, the new doc has clashed with half-sister Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and hit it off with Richard (James Pickens Jr.), whom she has no idea is her biological father. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with McCreary to discuss friction with Mer, how Richard could respond and just how much she knows about her biological mother. Photos: The Couples of Shondaland: 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice,' 'Scandal' Maggie hasn't had an easy road joining the ranks at Grey Sloan. How has your personal experience been by comparison? It's been so much better than Maggie's! One of the great things about Grey's is that it is a well-oiled machine. People have their routine; things run smoothly and questions get answered easily. It's a really chill working environment. And because it has been around for 10 years, everybody is curious and excited about who Maggie is and how she's going to affect … Continue reading

Gene Interacts with Stress and Leads to Heart Disease in Some People

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2014

Released: 30-Sep-2014 9:00 AM EDT Embargo expired: 1-Oct-2014 6:30 AM EDT Source Newsroom: Duke Medicine Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise DURHAM, N.C. A new genetic finding from Duke Medicine suggests that some people who are prone to hostility, anxiety and depression might also be hard-wired to gain weight when exposed to chronic stress, leading to diabetes and heart disease. An estimated 13 percent of people, all of whom are Caucasian, might carry the genetic susceptibility, and knowing this could help them reduce heart disease with simple interventions such as a healthy diet, exercise and stress management. Genetic susceptibility, psychosocial stress and metabolic factors act in combination to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, said Elizabeth Hauser, Ph.D. director of Computational Biology at the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute. Hauser is senior author of a study detailing the findings in the Oct. 1, 2014, online issue of the European Journal of Human Genetics. Hauser and colleagues analyzed genome-wide association data from nearly 6,000 people enrolled in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). The MESA study began in 2000 to better understand how heart disease starts, compiling the participants genetic makeup as well as physical traits such as hip circumference, … Continue reading
