Adolescent exposure to thc may cause immune systems to go up in smoke

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-Sep-2014 Contact: Cody Mooneyhan cmooneyhan@faseb.org 301-634-7104 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology @fasebopa When it comes to using marijuana, new research, involving mice and published in the October 2014 issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, suggests that just because you can do it, doesn't mean that you should. That's because a team of Italian scientists have found that using marijuana in adolescence may do serious long-term damage to the immune system. This damage may result in autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis in adulthood. "I hope that the knowledge that early exposure to marijuana is associated with immediate and long-term deleterious effects on the immune system may reach adolescents and their families," said Paola Sacerdote, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Universit degli Studi di Milano in Milano, Italy. "The increased risk of getting sick in adulthood may hopefully be a deterrent for marijuana abuse among young individuals." To make this discovery, scientists injected "adolescent" mice with THC, the main active component of marijuana, for 10 days. This period in the mouse lifecycle corresponded to the adolescence period in humans (approximately ages … Continue reading

Genomic data could help doctors know whether to prescribe statins

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Sep-2014 Contact: Anna Perman Anna.Perman@biomedcentral.com 44-020-319-22429 BioMed Central @biomedcentral Genomic data could predict whether statins will benefit a patient or not, according to an article in the open access journal Genome Biology. The research suggests that genomic data alone can explain around 15% of patients' responses to a cholesterol-lowering statin, and further studies could increase the accuracy of these predictions. The study looked at data from 372 participants in an American clinical trial for the statin, Simvastatin, and found that certain genetic signatures were more common in patients whose cholesterol was effectively lowered by the treatment, while others were associated with patients who hadn't responded so well. It was possible to predict how 15% of the patients would respond to statins, and this data could help clinicians to make a decision about whether to prescribe statins for individual patients. Statins are used to try to lower patients' levels of cholesterol, a type of fat which is carried in the blood and can block arteries. While they reduce rates of heart disease in many patients, clinicians have debated whether they should be prescribed widely, because they have significant side-effects which some argue outweigh the benefits. Being able to … Continue reading

Seattle Genetics Seeks Expanded Use of Lymphoma Drug Following Study Win

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

SEATTLE ( TheStreet) -- Seattle Genetics (SGEN) will seek to expand the approved use of its Hodgkin lymphomadrug Adcetris following positive results from a phase III study, the company announced Monday. In the study (known as AETHERA), treatment with Adcetris in "high risk" Hodgkin lymphomapatients immediately after a stem-cell transplant led to a 43% reduction in the risk of disease progression compared to placebo. The result was statistically significant and met the primary endpoint of the study. The Hodgkin lymphoma patients enrolled in the study were deemed to be "high risk" because they had at least one factorthat made them more susceptible to disease relapse. Must Read: 10 Stocks George Soros Is Buying Despite delaying disease progression, treatment with Adcetris did not prolong survival compared to placebo in the phase III study at this analysis, which the company blames partly on placebo patients "crossing over" to receive Adcetris once their disease progressed. Another survival analysis of the study will be conducted in 2016. Adcetris' safety profile was "generally consistent" with previous studies, the company said. No further details were disclosed, pending presentation of the results at a future medical meeting. Adcetris is already approved to treat more advanced Hodgkin patients who … Continue reading

Register to become a marrow donor

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

Every four minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia, lymphoma or sickle cell anemia. For many, over 12,000 per year, a bone marrow(stem cell) transplant is the only life saving treatment their only chance for a cure. Of these patients, 70 percent do not have a matching donor in their family and must turn to National Marrow Donor Program. In just the past year, three families in Friendswood have received such a diagnosis and have had a loved one undergo a transplant. Two of those patients did not have a family member match and needed an unrelated donor. Hope Lutheran Church, in conjunction with Be the Match (the national bone marrow donor registry), will host a donor registration event on Sunday, October 5th from 10 until 3 in the Grand Hallway of the Center for Faith Development. All you need do is fill out a consent form and take a saliva swab. It only takes a few minutes and it may offer you the opportunity to save a life. Donors should be in good health and between the ages of 18 and 44. The registration is free. Questions? Contact Jerry and Joyce Pfleeger at jerry.pfleeger@comcast.net or (281) … Continue reading
