Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

If Greys Anatomy fans expected a warm sisterly embrace between Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) when the ABC medical drama returned for season 11, they were sorely mistaken. Instead, the unaware Meredith butted heads with the new head of cardio, ultimately leading to a nasty confrontation that will undoubtedly color Merediths reaction when she eventually finds out the truth that Maggie is her half-sister. Its going to get worse before it gets better, McCreary tells EW. Maggies a professional, but they push each others buttons professionally. They have different approaches on how to do things. Try as Maggie might, she cant release her stubbornness or other vices, like her tenaciousness, when it comes to working with Meredith. But Meredith isnt the only Grey Sloan doc shell will go toe-to-toe with in this weeks Maggie-centric episode, in which she faces a series of unfortunate circumstances at work. Shes having a hard time connecting with the other doctors at the hospital, McCreary says, explaining that Maggie will put her foot in her mouth more than once. TUH extends coverage for remote stroke treatment

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

Teleconferencing for suspected strokes can provide earlier diagnoses. by Kayla Oatneal 30 September 2014 Neurologists at Temple Hospital are now able to provide health care for a stroke at select hospitals within a 100-mile radius through their REACH Health Telemedicine Stroke Program, which is possible after the implementation of an advanced telemedicine cart. The REACH Access Telemedicine Cart connects TUH neurologists to distant spoke hospitals and enables them to conduct full neurology exams, medical decision-making and treatment by video conferencing. Its sort of like a high-resolution Skype, said Dr. Paul Katz, director of the TUH Stroke Program. The resolution of the video is such that I could zoom in and actually look at their pupils and then zoom out and look at their whole body. With the help of a nurse or another doctor at the distant facility, I could do a full neurological exam on this particular patient. Each spoke hospital has a telemedicine cart in its emergency department. When an acute stroke patient is received at a spoke hospitals emergency department, Temples Transport Team and Comprehensive Communication Center are alerted and on-call neurologists at TUH are located. TUH is currently in a negotiation period to develop a network … Continue reading

Stroke signs: 3 hour deadline

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The day started liked any other for Brad and Sara Fahrenkamp with breakfast before work with their two little boys. But suddenly Brad got very sick. Sara Fahrenkamp told ABC30, "He said I just don't feel well, I feel kind of nauseous and flu-like. I'm just going to stay home today." Throughout their marriage, Brad had always been healthy. By nighttime they knew something was very wrong. Stroke patient, Brad Fahrenkamp told ABC30, "My left arm and part of my face were numb and tingling. I went to stand up to dress myself and I fell right to the floor." Sara Fahrenkamp said, "I was absolutely shocked when the physician in the ER said to us, your husband has had not just one stroke, but three strokes." A stroke occurs when blood flow is blocked to the brain or blood leaks in the brain and damages cells. Symptoms occur in the parts of the body controlled by those cells. Neurological Physical Therapist for the University of Cincinnati, Paige Thomas, PT-MSR told ABC30, "The quicker that you can obtain emergency services and emergency care, the quicker you can receive treatment and medication that can hopefully stop the … Continue reading

Eric LeGrand inspires students at Bonnie Brae

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

BERNARDS TWP. - From his customized wheelchair, former Rutgers University football player Eric LeGrand shared his compelling story of working to overcome life's obstacles with students at Bonnie Brae School in Liberty Corner on Friday, Sept. 26. LeGrand, who suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a 2010 football game, motored into the Bonnie Brae gym and was warmly greeted by a group of Bonnie Brae students wearing T-shirts they had air-brushed with his motto of Believe. A banner hanging front and center, also made by students, displayed the message that is recorded on LeGrands voicemail: Remember, never take anything for granted. Every day is a gift. Its a prize of its own, so go out there and receive it. Enjoy it and live it to the best of your ability. Believe. One could hear a pin drop in the schools gym as LeGrand related his personal journey of courage and inspiration with the 200 boys and staff members of Bonnie Brae. They said I would never breathe without a ventilator, and I did,'' he said. "They said I would never be able to eat a normal meal, and I did. They said I would never walk again, but I … Continue reading

Remote healthcare for an aging population

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

An aging population and an increased incidence of debilitating illnesses such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease means there is pressure on technology to offer assistance with healthcare -- monitoring and treatment. Research published in the International Journal of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing points to remote monitoring as offering a way to improve patient care and even accelerate medical research. Andrew Thomas formerly of Birmingham City University, UK and colleagues there and at the University of Wolverhampton, UK, the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, Ritsumeikan University, in Kusatsu and Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Japan, suggest there is a need to develop pervasive technologies that monitor patients at home, where medically viable so as to reduce the pressure on general practitioners and other healthcare workers and their limited resources. "Those 'smart care spaces' require use of sensors and intelligent computer systems to support the needs of the cared-for, carers and medical personnel," the team reports. The judicious use of technology and the development of a smart care spaces will hopefully lead to great improvements in the quality-of-life through comfort and adequate medical-monitoring of patients with a range of serious, chronic and degenerative conditions where current practice does not cope well … Continue reading
