Stem cell therapy for pets available in Huntsville

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) -- We hate to see our elderly loved ones start having trouble getting around. The same goes for our pets. They're part of the family too. Now there's a procedure that could help pets across the valley, in just one day. For Tasha, Wednesday was a big day. The 12 year old black lab has a tough time getting around. She has hip dysplasia and arthritis. But this visit to Whitesburg Animal Hospital, should change that. "In a week, they're better. Even in the first day or two, you'll see noticeable improvement," says Whitesburg veterinarian Dr. Mark Russell. The hospital teamed up with MediVet America to offer a one-day stem cell procedure, the first in North Alabama. It can now activate sleeping stem cells in an animal's fat, then inject them right back into the damaged areas. "The stem cells will repair and regenerate cartilage, tendons, whatever is lacking in that area," says Trey Smith, the Director of Lab Services for MediVet America. In the past, the cells had to be sent to California to be activated. This quicker procedure has another benefit. "We've relied on medications to try to control this, and that's pretty much all … Continue reading

A Birmingham couple who spent 20,000 on fertility treatment, finally conceiving their beloved son on a special diet of egg yolks and soya, are getting married with their newborn as guest of honour. Cathy Garvey, 43, and Dan Bowley, 42, of Kings Norton, spent a heartbreaking six years trying for a baby which included four rounds of failed IVF treatment. But scientists at CARE Fertility, finally cracked it on their fifth attempt by drip-feeding the new mum egg yolk and soya oil to fight killer cells that were destroying her chances. And thanks to the unusual treatment, Cathy and Dan, a retail manager, are now the proud parents to baby Joseph who was born on July 8, weighing 7lbs 14oz. Now the couple can start saving for the wedding they dreamed of. It was worth every penny because we got Joseph in the end, said Cathy, 43, a recruitment adminstrator. We did have to put off our wedding because we couldnt afford it after spending so much money on fertility treatment. But Joseph is perfect. Hell be the guest of honour at our wedding. Cathy struggled to get pregnant naturally for two years but had expected to have problems after … Continue reading

Liver gene therapy corrects heart symptoms in model of rare enzyme disorder

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Sep-2014 Contact: Karen Kreeger karen.kreeger@uphs.upenn.edu 215-349-5658 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine @PennMedNews PHILADELPHIA In the second of two papers outlining new gene-therapy approaches to treat a rare disease called MPS I, researchers from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania examined systemic delivery of a vector to replace the enzyme IDUA, which is deficient in patients with this disorder. The second paper, which is published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week, describes how an injection of a vector expressing the IDUA enzyme to the liver can prevent most of the systemic manifestations of the disease, including those found in the heart. The first paper, published in Molecular Therapy, describes the use of an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector to introduce normal IDUA to glial and neuronal cells in the brain and spinal cord in a feline model. The aim of that study was to directly treat the central nervous system manifestations of MPS while the more recent study aims to treat all other manifestations of the disease outside of the nervous system. This family of diseases comprises about 50 rare inherited disorders marked by defects in the lysosomes, compartments … Continue reading

DNA signature found in ice storm babies

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Sep-2014 Contact: Florence Meney florence.meney@douglas.mcgill.ca Douglas Mental Health University Institute This news release is available in French. Montreal, September 29th, 2014 - The number of days an expectant mother was deprived of electricity during Quebec's Ice Storm (1998) predicts the epigenetic profile of her child, a new study finds. Scientists from the Douglas Mental Health University Institute and McGill University have detected a distinctive 'signature' in the DNA of children born in the aftermath of the massive Quebec ice storm. Five months after the event, researchers recruited women who had been pregnant during the disaster and assessed their degrees of hardship and distress in a study called Project Ice Storm. Thirteen years later, the researchers found that DNA within the T cells - a type of immune system cell - of 36 children showed distinctive patterns in DNA methylation. The researchers concluded for the first time that maternal hardship, predicted the degree of methylation of DNA in the T cells. The "epigenetic" signature plays a role in the way the genes express themselves. This study is also the first to show that it is the objective stress exposure (such as days without electricity) and not the degree … Continue reading
