Stem cell therapy for pets available in Huntsville …

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) -- We hate to see our elderly loved ones start having trouble getting around. The same goes for our pets. They're part of the family too. Now there's a procedure that could help pets across the valley, in just one day. For Tasha, Wednesday was a big day. The 12 year old black lab has a tough time getting around. She has hip dysplasia and arthritis. But this visit to Whitesburg Animal Hospital, should change that. "In a week, they're better. Even in the first day or two, you'll see noticeable improvement," says Whitesburg veterinarian Dr. Mark Russell. The hospital teamed up with MediVet America to offer a one-day stem cell procedure, the first in North Alabama. It can now activate sleeping stem cells in an animal's fat, then inject them right back into the damaged areas. "The stem cells will repair and regenerate cartilage, tendons, whatever is lacking in that area," says Trey Smith, the Director of Lab Services for MediVet America. In the past, the cells had to be sent to California to be activated. This quicker procedure has another benefit. "We've relied on medications to try to control this, and that's pretty much all … Continue reading

Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell Addresses His Stem Cell Treatment

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

09/26/2014 . Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell has issued a statement about his upcoming stem cell transplant, which he hopes will keep Hodgkin's lymphoma from returning again. Campbell was diagnosed with the cancer in 2013, which briefly went into remission only to return again. He received further treatment and cancer is once again in remission and he will be undergoing the stem cell transplant in an attempt to keep the cancer from returning once again. He wrote on the band's official website, "As many of you know, I've been scheduled to start a stem cell transplant and as soon as I got home from tour I began the necessary tests and preparations. I'll be admitted to hospital soon for all the yucky bits, so in the meantime I'm headed to Target to stock up on cozy pajamas, fresh underwear, and a sackful of car-porn. "Unfortunately, this means that I won't be able to perform with the band on the upcoming NFL broadcast on Sept. 28th, nor will I be able to do the shows scheduled for Oct/Nov. "While I can't say that I'm looking forward to the process ahead, I'm very much looking forward to what I feel will be a … Continue reading

Stem cell transplant does not cure SHIV/AIDS after irradiation of infected rhesus macaques

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

A study published on September 25th in PLOS Pathogens reports a new primate model to test treatments that might cure HIV/AIDS and suggests answers to questions raised by the "Berlin patient," the only human thought to have been cured so far. Being HIV-positive and having developed leukemia, the Berlin patient underwent irradiation followed by a bone-marrow transplant from a donor with a mutation that abolishes the function of the CCR5 gene. The gene codes for a protein that facilitates HIV entry into human cells, and the mutation -- in homozygous carriers who, like the donor, have two defective copies -- protects against HIV infection. Several factors could have contributed to the cure of HIV/AIDS in the patient: (1) the ablation of blood and immune cells following irradiation killed all or many of the viral reservoir cells that are not eliminated by antiretroviral treatment (ART); (2) the CCR5 deletion mutation in the donor cells protected them and their progeny from HIV infection; (3) a "graft versus host" reaction occurred, where the transplanted cells and their progeny recognize the host cells as foreign and attacked and eliminated HIV-positive reservoir cells that survived the irradiation. Guido Silvestri, from Emory University in Atlanta, USA, … Continue reading

Reduced pregnancy rate in women undergoing IVF treatment linked to vitamin D deficiency

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

(PRWEB UK) 26 September 2014 A new study has found that women with a vitamin D deficiency are far less likely to conceive through IVF treatment than those with the correct levels of the vitamin. The study - the largest of its kind to date - was published by The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (1) and found that women with sufficient levels of vitamin D (20 ng/ml) were almost twice as likely to conceive as those who were deficient. Vitamin D, which can be produced in the skin by exposure to the sun, as well as being absorbed from fortified foods and specialist supplements, is fast becoming an emerging factor in fertility. Vitamin Planet supplies the revolutionary D-MAX vitamin D capsules (2) - containing new OptiZyme absorption technology that has been clinically proven to enhance absorption rates of vitamin D. D-MAX vitamin D, made in the UK using 100% pure premium Colecalciferol, contains no fillers or binders and is also suited to vegetarian, halal and kosher dietary needs. Marketing manager Ryan Malting commented, "We've seen a significant increase in sales of D-MAX capsules over the past month and believe that this product offers the best possible results for … Continue reading

Can genetic engineering help food crops better tolerate drought?

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Sep-2014 Contact: Kathryn Ryan kryan@liebertpub.com 914-740-2100 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News @LiebertOnline New Rochelle, NY, September 25, 2014The staggering growth rate of the global population demands innovative and sustainable solutions to increase food production by as much as 70-100% in the next few decades. In light of environmental changes, more drought-tolerant food crops are essential. The latest technological advances and future directions in regulating genes involved in stress tolerance in crops is presented in a Review article in OMICS: A Journal of Integrative Biology, the peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available free on the OMICS website. Coauthors Roel Rabara and Paul Rushton, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, Dallas, TX, and Prateek Tripathi, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, focus on the role of transcription factors, described as "master regulators" because they are important components of many genetic regulatory pathways and may be able to control clusters of genes. Drought tolerance is a complex trait that is regulated by multiple genes. In the article "The Potential of Transcription Factor-Based Genetic Engineering in Improving Crop Tolerance to Drought," the authors describe current strategies for using transcription factors to … Continue reading

RSS wing against investments from genetic engineering firms

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

Even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his US visit, the Sangh Parivar has come out with its demands. Vijnana Bharati, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-inspired organisation working in the field of science, told Modi, through an open letter, not to invite any sort of investments in the field of genetic engineering technologies to produce seeds in India. "Indian farmers and scientific community are engaged in a relentless war against the field trials announced by the Union government and the introduction of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) without adequate research," said A Jayakumar, secretary-general, Vijnana Bharati. According to Jayakumar, the PM had already mentioned he would seek investments in the biotechnology sector during his US visit. "While investments in other fields of biotechnology might be desirable, investments in genetic engineering for producing seeds should be strictly avoided due to certain critical factors. Most importantly, genetic engineering technologies go hand-in-hand with royalties. The monopoly of Monsanto in Maharashtra has led to serious debts incurred by farmers resulting in large-scale suicides," the open letter said. The letter noted the experience in the US, where herbicide-resistant GMO seeds have led to the emergence of super weeds, which are uncontrollable. "As the Technical Expert Committee appointed … Continue reading
