A CDC-funded organization has advised TV shows from Grey's Anatomy to Law & Order on how to write plots that deal with medical and health-insurance issues. ABC The questions from producers run the gamut: Could a body be stolen from a hospital? What do infectious disease specialists wear during an outbreak? Do surgeons really say Stat!? In a bright office building in Beverly Hills, Kate Langrall Folb and her team at Hollywood, Health, and Society are on call to field queries from the mundane to the obscure. Operators are standing by, Folb, the groups director, often tells TV and movie writers. The organization was established with money from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2001 to provide the entertainment industry with free, accurate health information. Since then, the group has worked with hundreds of television writers as they tell stories about performing complicated surgeries, coping with depression and fighting insurance companies for coverage. They consulted on Walter Whites cancer battle in Breaking Bad and on Max Bravermans Aspergers syndrome in Parenthood. They advised writers for Law & Order on an unvaccinated child who infected a classmate and on Disneys Doc McStuffins on treating her broken toys. And … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

Can you believe its been 11 years since Dr. Meredith Grey and her love-torn medical colleagues first made their debut on TV? Even after more than a decade of watching Grey navigate her busy life of medicine, romance and motherhood, it almost feels like yesterday when she was first enrolling in the former Seattle Grace Hospital's internship program. But before "Grey's Anatomy" returns this Thursday at 8 EST/PST / 7 CST, take a moment to recap what the dedicated crew of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital have been up to below. Season 10 showed Dr. Grey performing a life juggling act of her career, marriage and motherhood. But tragedy struck the hospital early when Dr. Heather Brooks was electrocuted and Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Ross were unable to resuscitate her. Dr. Karev also reconnected with his father Jimmy but was dismayed to learn that he had family in another state. Before the father/son could make amends, Jimmy passed away due to a botched surgery. Dr. Cristina Yang teamed up with Dr. Ross for research on heart conduits, while Grey continued the research that her mother was doing before her death. Dr. Robbins enjoyed many steamy encounters with Dr. Leah Murphy, but … Continue reading

Local man shares his story of stem cell donation

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

When a child became ill, Jim Pattison was one of many who stepped up as a potential bone marrow donor. Herald photo by Jodi Schellenberg Jim Pattison was given two paperweights for his stem cell donation. He decided to become a donor in 1996, but was not a match until after 2010. In 1996, Pattison was one of many who went on the bone marrow transplant list to help a one and a half year old child who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The organizers of the donor drive expected maybe 50 people to show up and were shocked by the close to 400 who attended. Sadly, the family didnt find a match and the girl died, but Pattison decided to stay on the registry. They asked if I wanted to stay on and my answer was that if I would do it for Abigail I would do it for anybody, he said. Throughout the years, Pattison was asked to test for more markers to see if he would be a match for someone else. He did his last test in 2010 and heard back a short time later with the news he was a match. Pattison was chosen … Continue reading

Colchester teen becomes one of the UK's youngest stem cell donors

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

A teenager who gave stem cells to save the life of a stranger is backing a national campaign to find more donors. In June, Celyn Evans, 17, became one of the youngest people in the UK to donate stem cells. The Colchester Royal Grammar School sixth-form student is supporting Anthony Nolans Save a Life at 16 campaign. The charity wants HMRC to include details about stem cell donation when it writes to teens with their National Insurance numbers ahead of their 16th birthday. Celyn, of West Mersea, said: You often hear that young people are self absorbed and not interested in helping others, but I think thats wrong. People just need to be made aware of how they can help. That is why I am supporting this campaign. Celyn joined the bone marrow donor register last September when his brothers friend developed leukaemia. He was not able to help the family friend, but in February, Anthony Nolan contacted him to say he was a possible match for another patient in need of a potentially life-saving transplant. Celyn agreed to donate and, after a series of check-ups, made the donation in London in June. Like 90 per cent of donors, he … Continue reading

Company plans for the future of stem cell use by Samantha Schmieder Staff Writer Next Healthcare Inc. of Germantown recently launched a partnership with Arizona Cardinals wide reciever Larry Fitzgerald to promote its newest venture, CelBank Pro to other professional athletes. Next Healthcares CelBank is the collection of cell samples and storage of their blood, skin or stem cells to be used in the future. Stem cells are unspecialized cells that are able to renew themselves through cell division and can be scientifically manipulated to become another type of cell with a more specialized function. They offer hope to provide new ways to fight disease or injuries, according to the National Institutes of Health. Essentially we are in the business of banking cells for people, Vin Singh, the founder and CEO of Next Healthcare, said. While CelBank is geared toward anyone interested in using their own cells later in their life, CelBank Pro is geared toward sports players who are very likely to get injured or just worn down during their career. Skin cells and stem cells are stored at a healthy time at someones life for later use in regenerative medicine, Singh said. In 2006 and 2007, Singh, who … Continue reading

Beat tennis elbow with stem cell injections: Patients are receiving jabs to heal hard-to-treat tendon injuries

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

By Roger Dobson for the Daily Mail Published: 18:06 EST, 22 September 2014 | Updated: 18:06 EST, 22 September 2014 Scientists believe stem cells will provide a more effective solution fortendon injuries Patients are receiving jabs of their own cells in an attempt to heal hard-to-treat tendon injuries, such as tennis elbow. The treatment, which has previously been used on injured racehorses, uses a patient's stem cells to super-charge the body's natural repair mechanisms. Millions of Britons suffer tendon injuries. Tendons are the tough bands of tissue that connect muscle to bone. They can become damaged through wear and tear or injury, causing inflammation or tears. Such damage is notoriously difficult to treat because tendons have a very poor blood supply, so healing compounds cannot reach the injury site. As a result, tough scar tissue often forms around the tendon, significantly hampering movement and flexibility. Treatments include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroid injections and physiotherapy, but experts say they have limited success. Scientists believe stem cells - which have the ability to turn into different types of cells in the body - will provide a more effective solution. Early-stage laboratory studies, as well as reports from treating racehorses, have shown … Continue reading
