It's Time To Cross The T's…

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

Testosterone, often considered as the "fountain of youth", is the major sex hormone in men, and as they age the level of this hormone also naturally declines. The condition in which the body doesn't produce enough testosterone, also known as hypogonadism or simply, Low T, is associated with specific signs and symptoms, including diminished sex drive and sense of vitality, erectile dysfunction, mood disturbances, fatigue and osteoporosis. Although Low T is especially common in older males, it can also occur at any age, and that can be due to inherited conditions, disease, injury, drugs, and certain types of cancer. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is often recommended to provide and maintain a normal level of testosterone. TRT is available in several forms like skin patch, gels, mouth patch, injections and subcutaneous implants. Although testosterone products are FDA-approved only for use in men who lack or have low testosterone levels in conjunction with an associated medical condition, they are also being widely used without a diagnosis of low testosterone by young men seeking to improve strength, athletic performance and physical appearance, and older men who want to ward off signs of aging. Such has been the aggressiveness of marketing campaigns that testosterone … Continue reading

Ageing of Australia's scientists creating a void in nation's future research workforce

Funding discrimination: Professor Alan Trouson warns Australia faces a catastrophe if we neglect our young scientists. Photo: Angela Wylie The pioneering Australian IVF and stem cell scientist Alan Trounson has warned of a "catastrophic event" in Australian science unless more is done to support early career scientists and prevent them leaving research in droves. The system of awarding public money to researchers disproportionately funds older, more established scientists over early and mid-career researchers, who are less experienced but are the country's future science leaders and medical experts. "We'll lose generations of really top young people if we don't correct it, and those are the young people who are going to win all of those Nobel prizes in the future," said Professor Trounson, a former Australian of the Year who recently returned to Melbourne after seven years leading California's $3 billion Institute of Regenerative Medicine. Advertisement "That's a catastrophic event for Australia," he said. The problem was particularly evident in biological and medical research. Never before released figures show the average age of lead investigators awarded funding for research projects from the National Health and Medical Research Council, the main funding body for medical research, has increased by nine years over … Continue reading

Growing R&D Investments & Developments in Nanomaterials to Drive the Global Nanotechnology Market, According to New …

San Jose, California (PRWEB) September 19, 2014 Follow us on LinkedIn Nanotechnology and its potential to revolutionize the world has attracted diverse players including academic institutions, government agencies, multinational corporations and small start-ups. The early years of nanotechnology development was dominated by government funded research projects largely due to the high risks involved, which deterred private and venture capital investments. Government budgets earmarked for this evolving technology have been growing over the years, emphasizing rising importance of nanotechnology in modern industrial society. A key reason cited for this keen federal level interest in nanotechnology research is the technologys ability to improve human life, health and business, thus in the process encouraging economic prosperity. The successful commercialization of numerous nanotechnology enabled products and the ensuing reduction in investment risks will however witness the private sector play a more important role in R&D in the coming years. Although the government will continue to remain a prime player both in terms of funding and use of the technology, several large companies will step up their investment focus in developing in-house R&D expertise in specific applications encouraged by the lucrative commercial opportunities in store. Increasing production of nanomaterials, declining prices and rapid commercialization are … Continue reading

Cancer treatment for dogs could one day save humans

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

Heidi Richmond walks her dog, Grizz, who is being treated with the canine melanoma vaccine. The medication is a form of immunotherapy, teaching the dog's immune system to fight the cancer. Ray Boone, Deseret News MURRAY The lifelong bonding between humans and dogs is eloquent. Dogs are loved as members of families. And just like family members, when they become ill, owners want them to have the best medical care. It appears dogs and humans are much more alike genetically than was originally believed, and what's saving their lives could save human lives as well. In fact, researchers are "going to the dogs," so to speak, to form a unique partnership. At Cottonwood Animal Hospital in Murray, Heidi Richmond's dog "Grizz" is being treated with a vaccine that's a form of immunotherapy. The treatment is approved only for oral melanomas in dogs, but designed from human genetics. Veterinarian Nathan Cox said this kind of match-up intrigues researchers. "The genetics of cancer in dogs is very similar to what it is in people," Cox said, "and that allows us a baseline to be able to study cancer in an alternate species." With traditional therapy, a dog with melanoma undergoes surgery or … Continue reading

Dogs, humans attack cancer together

Dogs, humans attack cancer together By Ed Yeates September 18th, 2014 @ 7:02pm SALT LAKE CITY It appears dogs and humans are much more alike genetically than we believed, and what's saving their lives could save our lives as well. In fact, researchers are "going to the dogs," so to speak, to form a unique partnership. And why shouldn't they? The lifelong bonding between humans and dogs is eloquent. We love them as members of our families. Their loyalty to us is boundless. And now, that bond goes much deeper. At Cottonwood Animal Hospital, Heidi Richmond's dog Grizz is being treated with a vaccine that's a form of immunotherapy. The treatment is approved only for oral melanomas in dogs, but designed from human genetics. Veterinarian Nathan Cox says this kind of match-up intrigues researchers. "The genetics of cancer in dogs is very similar to what it is in people, " he said. "That allows us a baseline to be able to study cancer in an alternate species." For Grizz and other dogs with cancer this human genetic product is different enough to trigger an immune response but similar enough to the dogs own melanoma to cross react training the immune … Continue reading
