DNA Blood Test Might Identify Status of Prostate Cancer

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 17, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A blood test that measures DNA from a prostate cancer tumor could provide doctors with a better assessment of the state of a man's disease, a new study suggests. If used routinely, this blood test could reveal when treatment for advanced prostate cancer stops working and actually begins promoting tumor growth, the researchers suggested. "Our study showed that a steroid treatment given to patients with advanced prostate cancer and often initially very effective started to activate harmful mutations and coincided with the cancer starting to grow again," study leader Dr. Gerhardt Attard, from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, explained in an ICR news release. "In the future, we hope to routinely monitor genetic mutations in patients with advanced disease using just a blood test -- enabling us to stop treatments when they become disease drivers and select the next best treatment option. We need to confirm these findings in larger numbers of patients, but using these types of blood tests could allow true personalization of treatment for prostate cancer patients, based on the cancer mutations we detect," he explained. Using a blood test to measure circulating tumor DNA levels is … Continue reading

New trial for lifer after DNA raises questions about murder conviction

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

The Philadelphia District Attorney's office announced Friday that it has agreed to a new trial for Anthony Wright, now serving life in prison for the 1991 rape and murder of a 77-year-old Nicetown woman. "We are committed in the District Attorney's office to giving everyone a fair trial," said Assistant District Attorney Mark Gilson, a veteran homicide prosecutor who in April was named head of the office's new Conviction Review Unit. Gilson said new DNA analysis techniques, which show that Wright's DNA was not on the body of Louise Talley, were "not available when we tried the case in 1993. We want a new trial where this will be considered with all the other evidence that we believe still proves this defendant murdered Louise Talley." The latest DNA tests on fluids found in Talley's body has been linked to a career criminal and crack addict named Ronnie Byrd, who died early last year in South Carolina. Gilson, however, said the new DNA evidence only proves that Wright did not rape Talley and did not act alone: "It doesn't exclude him as the murderer." Nina Morrison, senior staff attorney at the Innocence Project at Yeshiva University's Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School … Continue reading

UCI team is first to capture motion of single molecule in real time

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

UC Irvine chemists have scored a scientific first: capturing moving images of a single molecule as it vibrates, or "breathes," and shifts from one quantum state to another. The groundbreaking achievement, led by Ara Apkarian, professor of chemistry, and Eric Potma, associate professor of chemistry, opens a window into the strange realm of quantum mechanics - where nanoscopic bits of matter seemingly defy the logic of classical physics. This could lead to a wide variety of important applications, including lightning-fast quantum computers and uncrackable encryption of private messages. It also moves researchers a step closer to viewing the molecular world in action - being able to see the making and breaking of bonds, which controls biological processes such as enzymatic reactions and cellular dynamics. The August issue of Nature Photonics features this breakthrough as its cover story. "Our work is the first to capture the motion of one molecule in real time," Apkarian said. While still images of single molecules have been possible since the 1980s, recording a molecule's extremely rapid movements had proven elusive. In addition to using precisely tuned, ultrafast lasers and microscopes, the researchers had to equip the molecule with a tiny antenna consisting of two gold … Continue reading

Sibling chemistry a natural fit

LOS ANGELES In the new big-screen adaption of the best-selling Jonathan Topper novel This Is Where I Leave You, Tina Fey and Jason Bateman portray siblings with tight ties that bind. Just minutes after sitting down with the actors recently as they promoted the sprawling ensemble dramedy, which opened Friday, it was clear that Fey, 44, and Bateman, 45, had developed a real-life rapport, as well. A sampling: Bateman: If its chemistry, I guess thats what they call it but, we just shes a nice lady. Fey (trying to annoy Bateman by immediately repeating his words in a low mumble): A nice lady Bateman: She knows how to Fey: I know how to ... Bateman: remember her lines Fey: remember her lines. Bateman: And shes really easy on the eyes. Fey: I wasnt going to say that! Thank you. Go here to see the original: Sibling chemistry a natural fit … Continue reading

Board urges kids to try scientific academic programs

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

At the River Dell Board of Education meeting on Sept. 8, Superintendent Patrick Fletcher and Chemistry Teacher Carrie Jacobus highlighted the chemistry program at River Dell High School. The meeting spotlight was a way to encourage participation and raise awareness to students. According to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Coalition, students with scientific education are more likely to get better degrees and better jobs. According to the coalition, STEM occupations will grow 1.7 times faster than non-STEM occupations from 2008 to 2018. This past spring, two teams from the high school won the New Jersey Chemistry Olympics and Fletcher said he wanted to highlight the "outstanding achievements" that the students made at the competition. Fletcher described the Chemistry Olympics as an event better than the British Open or The Barclays referring to the premiere golfing events. Two teams from RDHS, comprised of about 30 students, competed in approximately 10 events in the Chemistry Olympics. Both teams placed first and second in two categories in the academic competition. "This is highly unusual to have two teams of one school come so close," said Jacobus. This is the fourth year we came in first place. It is kind of … Continue reading
