New mothers donation to mom with leukemia a potentially life-saving gift

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2014

MONTREAL Mai Duong wept as she spoke of the anonymous new mother who has recently donated the umbilical cord that just may generate the stem cells required to cure Duongs leukemia. A mom is saving another moms life and thats huge, Duong told reporters at a news conference at Hpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont Tuesday. Im very grateful to that lady. Were never going to meet, but she had the possibility, in giving birth to (her) own child, ... to give the cord, that otherwise would be tossed in the garbage. She decided to do more and she is going to potentially save my life. Duong, 34, launched a campaign two months ago to encourage non-Caucasians to sign up to Hma-Qubecs Stem Cell Donor Registry. Duong was hoping to find a compatible bone marrow donor for herself and improve the chances of other non-white patients requiring life-saving stem cell transplants. Duong suffers from acute myeloid leukemia and the only potential cure is a stem-cell transplant. Duong was born in Canada, but is of Vietnamese descent, which makes finding a compatible donor difficult. Donor and recipient being of the same ethnic background greatly increases the chances of success in stem cell transplants, but Asian … Continue reading

Hollywoods Nip/Tuck Obsession EXPOSED 50 Plastic Surgery Secrets & Scandals

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2014

Michael Jackson: The late king of pop symbolized celebrity plastic surgery for years, and he got started early, at age 21! According to Jacksons biographer, J. Randy Taraborrelli, Jackson underwent his first corrective surgery, rhinoplasty, in 1979 after breaking his nose while dancing. The surgery was only partly successful and subsequently caused breathing problems, so he underwent a second rhinoplasty in 1980. Many more procedures followed; his mom Katherine Jackson admitted after his death that Michael was addicted to plastic surgery. La Toya Jackson: Michael Jacksons older sister, 57, has had her share of plastic surgeryand it looks like the list includes liposuction on her stomach. Dr. Toby Mayer, co-director of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, said hes never seen liposuction go so wrong. All that wrinking on her upper abdomen is what happens when you remove too much fat, said Dr. Mayer. Heidi Fleiss has gotten a whole lot lippier as the years have gone by and is also rumored to have gotten cheek implants. Jocelyn Wildenstein earned her nickname the cat woman after undergoing more than $4 million dollars worth of surgeries to look like a feline for her husband! Facelifts, lip augmentation, breast … Continue reading

Japan stem-cell trial stirs envy

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2014

JIJI PRESS/AFP/Getty Images Masayo Takahashi is the first to implant tissue derived from induced pluripotent stem cells into a person. Its awesome, its amazing, Im thrilled, Ive been waiting for this, says Jeanne Loring, a stem-cell biologist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. She is one of several researchers around the world to welcome the news that a Japanese woman with visual impairment had become the first person to receive a therapy derived from stem cells known as induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. A lot rides on this trial. If the procedure proves safe, it could soften the stance of regulatory bodies in other nations towards human trials of iPS cells, and it could pave the way for treatments for other conditions, such as Parkinsons disease and diabetes. It could also cement Japan, recently plagued by a stem-cell scandal, as a frontrunner in iPS-cell research. Pioneered in 2006 by Shinya Yamanaka, now director of the Center for iPS Cell Research and Applications at Kyoto University, iPS cells are created by inserting certain genes into the DNA of adult cells to reprogram the cells back to an embryonic-like state. The cells can then be turned into almost any … Continue reading
