Quebec leukemia patient Mai Duong finds cord blood donor

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

A Quebec womans desperate, months-long search for a compatible stem cell or umbilical cord match is over. Mai Duong, a 34-year-old Vietnamese-Canadian battling acute leukemia, announced Tuesday that she has finally found a match. "I'm going to have the transplant and hopefully everything will go well and hopefully I'll have a new marrow," Duong tearfully told reporters Tuesday. "I just hope I'm going to beat cancer once and for all." "A woman gave birth to her child and has donated her baby's umbilical cord to save another life," reads a post on the Save Mai Duong Facebook page. "Thank you dear mommy, we cannot fathom the importance of your gesture. I am very moved." Duong beat cancer last year, after chemotherapy that she had to terminate a 15-week pregnancy to undergo. She was in remission until May, when blood tests revealed the leukemia had returned. "Seventy per cent of people who had that type of leukemia were just cured with chemotherapy and unfortunately I'm in the 30 per cent," she said at the time. Doctors said Duong would need a bone marrow transplant or cord blood stem cells and she needed it fast. Despite being on the international list, doctors … Continue reading

One country has more plastic surgery than U.S.

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

RIO DE JANIERO, BRAZIL- The country thats also known for a particular variety of womens waxing is having a lot of other procedures done as well. Brazil now ranks number uno when it comes to cosmetic surgery (1,491,721 in 2013). The U.S. falls just behind (1,452,356). According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Brazilians have 12.9 percent of the 11.6 million annual procedures worldwide. The top chop is liposuction, followed closely by boob jobs. On that note, Venezuela has a major problem: a scarcity of brand-name breast implants! Women are reportedly so desperate for voluptuous curves, doctors are turning to pieces that are the wrong size, made in China and low quality all around. Safe to say fake boobs arent the direst shortfall in the socialist South American country, but what can we say, they just like to have the breast, we mean the best, when it comes to appearance. California broadens autism therapy coverage for children on Medi-Cal

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

California children enrolled in public healthcare will regain access to an expensive form of autism therapy after the state Monday became the first in the country to comply with new federal guidelines. The therapy, called applied behavior analysis, was at the center of controversy last year when state officials phased out the Healthy Families program, which covered the treatment, and shifted poor children into Medi-Cal, which did not. Advocates said the new federal guidelines, issued in July, will help rectify this lapse in healthcare coverage for potentially thousands of children. "It's really incredible these kids can finally get the treatment," said Kristin Jacobson, president of Autism Deserves Equal Coverage, an advocacy group based in San Mateo County. "It can be the difference from a child who can't communicate at all to being able to say, 'I'm hungry,' or 'I'm tired.'" The therapy involves working closely with children to improve their behavior and learn new tasks. It can cost tens of thousands of dollars each year. While private insurance companies must cover the therapy under California law, it has been left out of Medi-Cal, the state's version of Medicaid, until now. "This important milestone will ensure that all children in California, … Continue reading

Give progesterone a chance

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 15-Sep-2014 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research There is currently no standard pharmacological treatment for spinal cord injury. Here, Dr. Florencia Labombarda, who comes from Buenos Aires University, Argentina suggests that progesterone, a steroid hormone, may be a promising therapeutical candidate as it is already for traumatic brain injury, where it has reached phase II clinical trials. We rely on previous works showing anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and promyelinating roles for progesterone after spinal cord injury and in our recent paper, in which we demonstrate that progesterone diminishes lesion, preserves white matter integrity and improves locomotor recovery in a clinically relevant model of spinal cord lesion. This is sure to be an exciting area of research in myelination regenerative therapy. The relevant study has been published in the Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 9, No. 15, 2014). ### Article "Give progesterone a chance " by Florencia Labombarda1,2, Daniel Garcia-Ovejero3 (1 Laboratory of Neuroendocrine Biochemistry, Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine CONICET, Vuelta de Obligado 2490, Buenos Aires, Argentina; 2 Departament of Human Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Buenos Aires University, Paraguay 2155, Buenos Aires, Argentina; 3 Neuroinflammation Laboratory, National Hospital For Paraplegics, (SESCAM), Toledo, Spain) Labombarda F, Garcia-Ovejero D. NFL Injuries Put Spotlight on Spinal Health

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 16, 2014 According to arecent article from the New York Times, NFL player David Wilson has retired after aggravating a neck injury he sustained in January. He initially had a herniated disc, and was then discovered to have spinal stenosis as well, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal that affects many adults and can lead to symptoms such as back or neck pain. Wilson had been hopeful that he could play again after surgery to repair the disc, but recently his doctors said otherwise. Leading spine surgeon Dr. Todd Gravori of ProMed SPINE comments on his condition and the importance of being aware of the risks associated with spinal injuries. Spinal stenosis can be present from birth, or it can develop from a number of conditions including trauma to the spine andherniated discs, explained Dr. Gravori. When it occurs in the neck, as with David Wilson, it can lead to neurological problems as well as pain and numbness in the extremities. Neurological problems associated with spinal stenosis include loss of sensation and bowel function, and even paralysis if aggravated or left untreated. Spinal stenosis does not always have to mean the end of … Continue reading

After traumatic brain injury, a young mans astounding recovery

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

By Rebecca Hubert Williams September 15 On Nov. 8, 2012, my son Dylan two months into his junior year at Tufts University was struck by a car in a crosswalk. His head punched a hole through the cars windshield, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury so severe that doctors initially warned he might be permanently disabled. He might never be able to feed himself again. When I got the call from the ambulance, I was sitting in a cozy chair reading The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, in which Nasim Nicholas Taleb argues that we should recognize the disproportionate effects of unexpected events on our lives. Dylans accident certainly made that case. An injury suffered in one second overwhelmed our family for months. Instead of studying abroad in Germany as he had planned, Dylan spent the rest of that academic year with doctors and therapists. Every year, millions of Americans suffer traumatic brain injury, or TBI. When the TBI is as severe as Dylans, most victims struggle for years to recover, with varying degrees of success. Dylan has made an extraordinary comeback, one that has surprised and inspired not only his family and friends but also … Continue reading
