Neuroimaging technique identifies concussion-related brain disease in living brain

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 16-Sep-2014 Contact: Elizabeth Dowling newsmedia@mssm.edu 212-241-9200 The Mount Sinai Hospital / Mount Sinai School of Medicine @mountsinainyc An experimental positron emission tomography (PET) tracer is effective in diagnosing concussion-related brain disease while a person is still alive, according to a case study conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and at Molecular Neuroimaging (MNI) LLC in New Haven, and published September 16 in the journal Translational Psychiatry. Specifically, the study results suggest that an experimental radiolabeled compound called [18 F]-T807, which is designed to latch onto a protein called tau that accumulates in the brain with repetitive blows to the head, can be registered on a PET scanner to effectively diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The study results also argue the process can differentiate it from other forms of dementia while the sufferer is still alive. Until now, CTE diagnosis has only been possible by evaluating post-mortem brain tissue. "Our data suggest that PET imaging using the [18F]-T807 tau tracer is an effective method of diagnosing or ruling out chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a living brain," says Samuel Gandy, MD, Director of the Center for Cognitive Health and NFL Neurological Care at the Icahn … Continue reading

Gov't to probe testosterone therapy claims, safety

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, Sept. 16, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is focusing on the "Low T" fad, questioning whether the boom in testosterone replacement therapy is helping or harming the health of aging American males. At a joint meeting scheduled for Sept. 17-18, two key FDA committees will discuss whether doctors are prescribing testosterone therapy for too many men, and if misuse of the male hormone increases the risk of stroke and heart attack. The Baby Boom generation has turned to testosterone replacement therapy in response to the sagging muscles, lower energy levels and sexual problems that can accompany natural aging, the FDA noted in a review provided to committee members in advance of the meeting. "There's a large group of men out there who are getting older, and they are looking for ways to evade the consequences of aging," said Dr. Bradley Anawalt, an endocrinologist from the University of Washington in Seattle. However, the FDA review pointed out there's no clear scientific evidence showing testosterone replacement can reverse some of the effects of aging. Yet the "Low T" craze has been aided by consumer advertising for remedies that promise renewed vitality … Continue reading

Genetic Study Contributes To Greater Understanding Of Prostate Cancer

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

September 16, 2014 John Hopton for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online A study of more than 87,000 individuals of European, African, Japanese and Latino ancestry has revealed 23 new genetic susceptibility locations indicating risk of prostate cancer, contributing to greater knowledge and hope for future prevention of the disease. The study, co-led by Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC), and scientists and researchers in the United Kingdom, is the largest of its kind and the first to combine multiple studies across different ethnic populations. It adds to previous research on prostate cancer which is, according to the American Cancer Society, the second most common cancer among American men behind skin cancer. It is estimated that in 2014 almost 30,000 men will die of prostate cancer and more than 233,000 new cases will be diagnosed. The goal of this research is to identify regions of the genome that contribute susceptibility to prostate cancer that could be used for understanding a mans future risk of developing this disease, said principal investigator Christopher Haiman, Sc.D., professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine. The 23 new common genetic variants are added to those previously identified to bring the total … Continue reading

Genetic Research Reveals Eight Distinct Types Of Schizophrenia

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Chuck Bednar for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online Schizophrenia is not a single disease, but a group of eight genetically distinct disorders each with its own unique set of symptoms, according to new research published online Monday in The American Journal of Psychiatry. Dr. C. Robert Cloninger, one of the senior investigators of the study as well as a professor of psychiatry and genetics at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and his colleagues believe their findings could be the first step towards improving how the condition is diagnosed and treated. According to the researchers, approximately 80 percent of schizophrenia risk is inherited, but scientists have struggled to identify the exact genes responsible for the debilitating psychiatric illness. Now, after conducting detailed analysis of genetic influences on over 4,000 people with schizophrenia, the study authors have identified distinct gene clusters which they said contribute to eight different classes of the disorder. Genes dont operate by themselves. They function in concert much like an orchestra, and to understand how theyre working, you have to know not just who the members of the orchestra are but how they interact, Dr. Cloninger, whose team matched precise DNA variations in people with … Continue reading

Scientists create therapy-grade stem cells using new cocktail to reprogram adult cells

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

8 hours ago Stem cells. Credit: Nissim Benvenisty - Wikipedia Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a new cocktail that is highly effective at coaxing adult cells to become quality pluripotent stem cells. Regenerative medicine is a new and expanding area that aims to replace lost or damaged cells, tissues or organs through cellular transplantation. Because stem cells derived from human embryos can trigger ethical concerns, a good solution is reprogramming adult cells back to an embryo-like state using a combination of reprogramming factors. The resulting cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), could be used to replace those lost to damage or disease. However, scientists have discovered that the process of reprogramming adult cells can introduce genetic abnormalities that limit the cells' usefulness in research and medicine. To make iPSCs, scientists expose adult cells to a cocktail of genes that are active in embryonic stem cells. iPSCs can then be coaxed to differentiate into other cell types such as nerve or muscle. However, the standard combination of factors used to reprogram cells leads to a high percentage of serious genomic aberrations in the resulting cells. (The reprogramming factors are Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and Mycknown collectively as … Continue reading

Genetics reveals patients susceptible to drug-induced pancreatitis

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Doctors have discovered that patients with a particular genetic variation are four times more likely to develop pancreatitis if they are prescribed a widely used group of drugs. Clinicians at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Exeter Medical School have discovered that 17 per cent of patients who have two copies of a particular genetic marker are likely to go on to develop pancreatitis if they are prescribed thiopurine drugs. The drugs, which include azathioprine and mercaptopurine, are some of the most effective and most commonly used drugs to suppress the immune system in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis and after some organ transplants. It has long been recognized that about four per cent of patients who are prescribed these drugs for IBD go on to develop pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, which can be fatal. But in a study published in Nature Genetics, doctors have identified a group of patients whose genetic make-up means they are more than four times more likely to develop the condition when given these drugs. Dr Graham Heap was part of a team led by Dr Tariq Ahmad, a gastroenterologist at the Royal … Continue reading
