Heart Groups Don’t Recommend Routine ECG Screening Of Young People

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

In a new scientific statement the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology do not recommend the routine initial use of ECGs to screen young people for underlying congenital or genetic heart disease. More aggressive screening for heart disease in young people is often advocated in response to pressure resulting from the rare but tragic cases of sudden death in young people. But a detailed examination of the evidence led the AHA/ACC group to conclude that routine initial ECG screening in healthy people 12-25 years old without positive findings on the history and physical examination has not been shown to save lives. The expert committeerecommends that healthcare providers screen young people using a 14-point checklist that contains information taken from the personal history, family history, and physical examination of young people aged 12 to 25. A positive finding on any of the 14 points means that further testing, including a 12-lead ECG, may be indicated. Although sudden death among young people is rare, it is always a tragedy, and the infrequency of these events in no way mitigates their importance or impact on families and the community. However, the media coverage of sudden cardiac arrests in athletes may … Continue reading

UI genomics facility closer to being renamed for Woese

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Photo by: The News-Gazette The late Carl Woese. On Monday, a proposal to rename the University of Illinois Institute for Genomic Biology after a renowned and longtime university scientist received a green light from the Senate Executive Committee. The new name, pending additional approvals, is the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. The UI's seven-year-old Institute for Genomic Biology, located near the historic Morrow Plots, is an interdisciplinary center home to genomics research. Woese was a founding member. Woese, who is credited with discovering a third domain of life, was a microbiology professor who spent his entire academic career at the UI. He died in late December 2012. Woese's "seminal discovery" rewrote biology textbooks, said the institute's director, Gene Robinson. Before Woese, it was believed there were two domains of life: bacteria/microbes and everything else. "He made the discovery by pulling some microbes out of an Illinois cow ... and looking at them very carefully with a new kind of microscope, a genetic microscope to sequence the genomes of these bugs. He looked up from his microscope and said, 'These don't look like any other microbes we've seen. They're not related to the microbes we've seen before.' People said … Continue reading

Math as Medicine: The Promise of Frequency Domain BioMarkers as a Template to Predict, Enchance and Promote Optimal …

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Albany, Ohio (PRWEB) September 15, 2014 In order to provide predictability and safety, the concepts of math and medicine often act conjointly to quantify, define and model medical practice. Defined as Bioinformatics (1), this industry has become an integral part of medical care. The Journal of BioAcoustic Biology (http://www.JBAB.org) regularly reports the studies conducted by the non-profit Institute of BioAcoustic Biology, located in Albany, Ohio, USA, which have consistently demonstrated that math can be much more than a measurement tool; math, as frequency, can be the solution to therapeutic predictability, management and resolution. The Business of Disease: An Inside Job and Outside Business by Sonia Barrett(2) includes an entire chapter devoted to explaining the Pathways of compounds called Chemistry; as they relate to Mathways of subtractive frequencies that can be used to create a numeric biomarker sets capable, individually and collectively, of being predictive, diagnostic and prescriptive. The chapter speculates that resonate matrix-based medicine has the ability to provide a prompt and corrective protocols in person or via the internet. To date there is no universally accepted modality that has the potential to assist in the survival of biological, radioactive and pandemic threats; reverse stroke and muscle trauma or support … Continue reading

Those who can, do and teach

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Synthetic biology is poised to change everything from energy development to food production to medicine but theres a bottleneck looming. How fast things develop depends on the number of people developing things. Lets face it: there arent that many biocoders. Not in the universities, not in industry, not in the DIY sector. Not enough to change the world, at any rate. We have to ramp up. And that means we first must train teachers and define biocoding curricula. Not at the university level try secondary, maybe even primary schools. That, of course, is a challenge. To get kids interested in synthetic biology, we have to do just that: get them interested. More to the point, get them jacked. Biocoding is incredibly exciting stuff, but that message isnt getting across. Students thinkscience and engineering is removed from daily life, says Natalie Kuldell, an instructor of biological engineering at MIT. We have to get them engaged, and connected to science and engineering more specifically, bioengineering in meaningful ways. As Kuldell sees it, thats a bipartite project. The first priority is creating curricula that are both comprehensive and compelling. Kuldell is doing just that through BioBuilder, a foundation she established with a broad array … Continue reading
