Ellen Pompeo attends an event celebrating Pharrell Williams on Feb. 27, 2014, in Los Angeles. Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images Ellen Pompeo may quit acting when she hangs up her doctor's coat. The "Grey's Anatomy" star says she doesn't see herself staying in the acting profession when filming on ABC's long-running drama series eventually comes to a conclusion. Pompeo, 44, made the comments about her career Wednesday while appearing at a BuzzFeed Brews Q+A panel in Hollywood, California. Pompeo was joined at the event by "The Help" actress Viola Davis and Kerry Washington, star of ABC's "Scandal" -- a series which, like "Grey's," was created by Shonda Rhimes. "I definitely don't have a strong desire to act after 'Grey's.' I definitely feel myself transitioning," Pompeo said. "I don't find acting terribly empowering." "Wow, that's a great statement," Washington remarked. Pompeo clarified, "I think my age. I think once I hit 40, I feel differently. I don't necessarily want to work for other people." After years of guest spots on TV shows like "Law & Order," Pompeo first gained notice when she made her film debut in 2002's "Moonlight Mile." Autism Advocates, Steinberg Praise States First-In-The-Nation Decision To Expand Medicaid Coverage For Low-Income Kids

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

SACRAMENTO, CA (September 11, 2014) As many as 75,000 primarily low-income California children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will become eligible for a life-altering form of treatment through Medi-Cal starting Monday September 15th, when California becomes the first state to implement a federal directive to step up Medicaid coverage for children with autism. Up to 12,000 of these children are expected to utilize the new benefits, according to a coalition of California and national advocacy groups. They have joined with Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg in praising the states move. Through this decision we have achieved and cemented the original vision of SB-946, which is full coverage under both private and public health plans for behavioral health treatment, Steinberg said, referring to the autism insurance reform law he authored in 2011. This important milestone will ensure that all children in California, regardless of their insurance or economic status, will have access to life-changing treatments for autism spectrum disorders. On Monday, the state Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) will issue an All-Plan Letter to Californias Medi-Cal managed care plans directing them to start covering behavioral health treatment, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA), for individuals with autism up to … Continue reading

A stroke of inspiration in duo

JEFF Newsome has learned to walk and talk again. And wheelchair-bound Romy believes she will one day run on the beach with her grandchildren and sail again. Their personal stories are a tribute to the outstanding work being done by the dedicated stroke unit at Ipswich Hospital. Romy Gawthorne, 72, had moved into a new unit in Tin Can Bay when she had her stroke early in 2014. "It had a swimming pool and I was thinking, when my lot came to visit, I could go down and swim with my great-grandkids, because they are water babies...like I am," she said. "I can walk a few steps. My biggest goal is to run with my little nephews and grandchildren on the beach and play footy with them. I will one day. "This unit is very good. I have had a speech therapist. I couldn't talk properly when I had my stroke. I had black moments when I couldn't remember things. But it has come back." Jeff, 74, started his journey to recovery after having a stroke four years ago. "I started doing six weeks of rehab here with speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy," he said. "If not for this … Continue reading

Treating Concussions With Dietary Supplements? The FDA Says No

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

Heal your concussion with our supplements. It sounds like the old advertisements for snake oilonly this particular dietary supplement company was promoting something called Skate Oil (which is fermented skate as in the fish liver oil) to help with the healing of a brain injury. Just in time for football season, the FDA has issued a statement on dietary supplements, specifically those claiming to heal or speed recovery from concussions and brain injuries. Were very concerned that false assurances of faster recovery will convince athletes of all ages, coaches and even parents that someone suffering from a concussion is ready to resume activities before they are really ready, said Gary Coody, FDAs National Health Fraud Coordinator. The FDA also cautions about claims that the products can prevent or lessen the severity of concussions or TBIs. (www.fda.gov) It is worth repeating these cautions about dietary supplements because the risk of long-lasting, permanent brain injury is especially real when appropriate medical treatment is not sought. The makers of dietary supplements would like for unsuspecting consumers to buy their potions and concoctions for a variety of ailments, including, in this instance, for the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. There are, however, many reports … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

Williamsport, PA (PRWEB) September 12, 2014 U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) recently selected Susquehanna Health (SH) to voice a call for action on the Traumatic Brain Injury Reauthorization Act of 2014. Senator Casey has taken a leadership role in promoting the bill, which amends the Public Health Service Act to reauthorize resources, programs and research dedicated to traumatic brain injury (TBI) for fiscal years 2015 through 2019. Over 60,000 children will sustain brain injuries requiring hospitalization each year, said Senator Casey during the August 25 announcement at Williamsport Regional Medical Center. This bill will help improve the prevention, accurate diagnosis and treatment of victims of TBI so that students can safely return to the classroom and continue to learn effectively. The reauthorization of this legislation ensures that medical facilities have necessary resources to care for patients with TBI and focuses on research and management of brain injury specifically in children. Senator Caseys support of families and children is legendary and has often influenced his selection for key congressional committees. Among the most notable is the Committee on Health, Education and Finance, said SH President & CEO Steven Johnson. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a significant and expensive public health challenge. … Continue reading

Researchers see success in trial for first generic MS drug, paving way for more development

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

For the first time, a generic version of a popular drug for multiple sclerosis (MS) was found to be safe and effective which may set precedent for generic drug development for MS patients. In new trial results presented Friday morning by the Cleveland Clinic, researchers studied a group of 735 patients with relapsing-remitting MS for nine months. The double-blind trial compared the popular MS drug Copaxone with a generic version. In both treatment groups, a comparable number of patients were free from disease activity and the disability was stable. Currently, there are no generic drugs available for patients with MS. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, relapsing-remitting MS is a form of the central nervous system disorder characterized by clearly defined attacks of worsening neurologic function. Patients experience attacks, often called relapses, followed by partial or complete recovery periods, or remissions. About 85 percent of MS patients are initially diagnosed with this form of the disease, compared to 10 to 15 percent who have progressive forms. Copaxone works by tricking the immune system into not attacking the nervous system, which is one of the characteristics of MS. The medication has been effective and well-tolerated, but while it controls the … Continue reading
