What is the Cause of Cerebral Palsy? | CerebralPalsy …

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

Cerebral palsy is caused by brain injury or brain malformation that occurs before, during, or immediately after birth while the infants brain is under development. But how a brain injury affects a childs motor functioning and intellectual abilities is highly dependent on the nature of a brain injury, where the damage occurs, and how severe it is. The cause of cerebral palsy is a brain injury or brain malformation that occurs while the brain is developing before, during, or after birth. As a result of the brain damage during brain development a childs muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance can be affected. It can also impact a childs fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and oral motor functioning. Every case of cerebral palsy is unique to the individual. This is due in part by the type of injury, extent of injury, and the timing of injury to the developing brain. The brain damage that causes cerebral palsy is a result of either: The brain damage that causes motor impairment in cerebral palsy results from one of four types of brain injury or brain malformation. Kyle Weaver walks into school after 'life-changing' surgery

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

A LLYSFAEN boy who was unable to walk due to cerebral palsy and underwent life-changing surgery walked straight into school on his first day last week. Kyle Weaver, aged four, proudly strode into Ysgol Cynfran, after just last year undergoing a three-and-a-half-hour operation on his legs in Missouri, USA, which helped him onto his feet for the first time. His mother Sam and father Simon described it as an amazing moment. Mrs Weaver said: It was a massive thing for us. We never thought we'd see him walk in to school when we first had the diagnosis of cerebral palsy. I was anxious about it all over the summer, just thinking about it a lot. I even took a day off work just to make sure everything was ok and I was sitting at home thinking about him all day. But he was fine, he just walked straight into school and he enjoyed it. It was just lovely to see him in there, in his uniform - I was so proud. I definitely feel like hes in safe hands there. Janna Espinoza's daughter Coraline has hearing loss, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and developmental delays. Nearly 2 years old, she can't sit up, stand, creep or use her hands as a typically developing child does. Coraline is among an estimated 6.4 million children in the U.S. with a disability. And for these kids the simple ritual of playing outside can get very complicated. "My daughter can't do very much at a typical playground, except watch her older sister play," says Espinoza. "Playgrounds are a depressing place for us." On a typical playground, danger lurks just about everywhere. "The infant bucket swings are not safe," explains Espinoza. "She can't go down the slide. She can't play in the sand unless she is on her stomach." Safety fence: A fence contains children within the playground … Continue reading

It's one of 2,505 playgrounds in 48 states and DC and 996 cities listed in our Playgrounds for Everyone app. NPR has spent the last year crowdsourcing the list. … Continue reading

More proof that sleep apnea hurts the brain

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

Employing a measure rarely used in sleep apnea studies, researchers at the UCLA School of Nursing have uncovered evidence of what may be damaging the brain in people with the sleep disorder weaker brain blood flow. In the study, published Aug. 28 in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE, researchers measured blood flow in the brain using a non-invasive MRI procedure: the global blood volume and oxygen dependent (BOLD) signal. This method is usually used to observe brain activity. Because previous research showed that poor regulation of blood in the brain might be a problem for people with sleep apnea, the researchers used the whole-brain BOLD signal to look at blood flow in individuals with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We know there is injury to the brain from sleep apnea, and we also know that the heart has problems pumping blood to the body, and potentially also to the brain, said Paul Macey, associate dean for Information Technology and Innovations at the UCLA School of Nursing and lead researcher for the study. By using this method, we were able to show changes in the amount of oxygenated blood across the whole brain, which could be one cause of the … Continue reading

Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease that wreaks havoc on the body. Watch the report A progressive form of the condition has no treatment. But this week in Boston, major funding was announced for research that may finally bring hope to those stricken by progressive MS. Gigi Ranno was diagnosed with MS in 1989. She said she's ecstatic about funding for new research funding to study progressive Multiple sclerosis. "When I heard about it I said, 'Woohoo!' I have reason to be hopeful," said Ranno. Ranno went from holding on to walls to a cane and walker to a wheelchair. "This disease has progressed beyond anything I could ever have imagined," she said. Once an active athlete, Ranno could only watch as her body betrayed her. "I need help to get in and out of bed, to dress myself, to get to the bathroom. I can't do anything on my own," said Ranno. Neighbor donates $70,000 minivan to help family with disabled daughter

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Izzy Penston has been featured before on ABC7 News. Since the last broadcast, it is getting harder for her to move around and she's now in a wheelchair. On Thursday, she and her family went home with something that will make their lives a lot easier. "It's super! It's super," claimed Izzy Penston speaking of her family's new super van designed especially for them. Izzy has Friedreich's ataxia, a rare, debilitating disease that causes loss of coordination and balance, and fatigue. She can no longer walk without assistance. And there is no cure or treatment. One of the Prenston's neighbors, Brad Barnett, watched the ABC7 News story about Izzy. He owns the dealership One Toyota of Oakland. "I've seen them and know them and when I saw that there was a need, it was something we are really passionate about," said Barnett. Toyota and a company called Mobility Works paid to upgrade the minivan for the Penston's, to accommodate Izzy and her wheelchair. This new van is worth $70,000. "Toyota makes the chassis. It's like a regular van... then the conversion company cuts the floor out, raises the chassis and makes the wheelchair accessible ramp," explained … Continue reading
