TRT ban forces UFC headliner 'Bigfoot' Silva into surgery

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

BRASILIA, Brazil For the past several years, testosterone replacement therapy has been one of the most controversial topics in the sport of MMA. Regulating the use of the hormone therapy proved such a challenging process that the Nevada State Athletic Commission in February banned the procedure, and UFC officials also followed suit. But where does that leave Antonio Silvaahead of Saturdays UFC Fight Night 51: Bigfoot vs. Arlovski 2 event? Its unfortunate that the good sometimes pay for the bad, but Im going to keep fighting anyway, Silva told MMAjunkie. Brazilian slugger Bigfoot Silva, 34, suffers from acromegaly, a form of gigantism that occurs when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone. Silva has dealt with the condition throughout his MMA career, and it will force him to undergo surgery later this month. Antonios acromegaly is caused by a cyst on the pituitary gland, Silvas longtime manager Alex Davis explained. The only way to access it is through the nose its underneath the brain. So after this fight, Im going to have to take him from here to head surgery because of the ban on TRT. Were taking a guy that really needed TRT and forcing him to do an … Continue reading

Stem cells help researchers understand how schizophrenic brains function

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 11-Sep-2014 Contact: Mary Beth O'Leary moleary@cell.com 617-397-2802 Cell Press @CellPressNews Using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), researchers have gained new insight into what may cause schizophrenia by revealing the altered patterns of neuronal signaling associated with this disease. They did so by exposing neurons derived from the hiPSCs of healthy individuals and of patients with schizophrenia to potassium chloride, which triggered these stem cells to release neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, that are crucial for brain function and are linked to various disorders. By discovering a simple method for stimulating hiPSCs to release neurotransmitters, the findings in the International Society for Stem Cell Research's journal Stem Cell Reports, published by Cell Press, could provide new insights into how neurons communicate with each other and could lead to a better understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying a range of brain disorders. "This study is novel because it shows that stem cell neurons derived from patients can provide new insight into neurotransmitter mechanisms occurring in brain disorders such as schizophrenia," says senior study author Vivian Hook of the University of California, San Diego. "The approach of this study has broad opportunities for uncovering the neurochemistry of brain cell communication … Continue reading

Scientists 'reset' stem cells to study development

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

British and Japanese scientists have managed to "reset" human stem cells to their earliest state, opening up a new realm of research into the start of human development and potentially life-saving regenerative medicines. In work described by one independent expert as "a major step forward", the scientists said they had successfully rebooted pluripotent stem cells so they were equivalent to those of a 7 to 10-day old embryo, before it implants in the womb. By studying the reset cells, they said they hoped they would now be able to learn more about embryo development, and how it can go wrong and cause miscarriage and developmental disorders. "These cells may represent the real starting point for formation of tissues in the human embryo," said Austin Smith, director of the Britain's Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, who co-led the research published in the journal Cell on Thursday. "We hope that in time they will allow us to unlock the fundamental biology of early development, which is impossible to study directly in people," he added. Human pluripotent stem cells, which have the potential to become any of the cells and tissues in the body, can already be made in a lab either from cells … Continue reading

Dartmouth research links genetic mutation and melanoma progression

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 11-Sep-2014 Contact: Robin Dutcher 603-653-9056 The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth Dartmouth researchers have found that the genetic mutation BRAFV600E, frequently found in metastatic melanoma, not only secretes a protein that promotes the growth of melanoma tumor cells, but can also modify the network of normal cells around the tumor to support the disease's progression. Targeting this mutation with Vemurafenib reduces this interaction, and suggests possible new treatment options for melanoma therapy. They report on their findings in "BRAFV600E melanoma cells secrete factors that activate stromal fibroblasts and enhance tumourigenicity," which was recently published in British Journal of Cancer. Authors of the study are Dr. Chery A. Whipple, research associate at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, and Dr. Constance Brinckerhoff, professor of Medicine and of Biochemistry at Geisel and member of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center. "This work supports the importance of the tumor cells "talking" with the normal cells present in the tumor microenvironment," said Whipple, first author on the study. "Targeting the tumor cells with specific therapy to reduce the secreted proteins can reduce the aggressive behavior of the tumor and inhibit disease progression." Melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer, … Continue reading

IBM's 'Ninja Particles' could stop the rise of superbugs

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

IBM Research's Jim Hedrick has a great job. His work on polymers -- those repeating chains of macromolecules that make up most things in our world, like the computer or phone you're reading this on -- has led to the creation of substances with Marvel Comics-worthy descriptors. There's the self-healing, Wolverine-like substance that arose from a recycled water bottle and something called "ninja particles" that'll advance the reality of nanomedicine. Both discoveries will inevitably make their way into consumer products in the near future, but it's his team's progress on nanomedicine that Hedrick discussed during my visit to IBM Research's sprawling Almaden lab in San Jose, California. The inspiration for IBM's foray into nanomedicine is twofold: our growing resistance to antibiotics and the incidence of medical-implant rejection by the human body. With this in mind, Hedrick and his team, leveraging IBM's background in semiconductor research, developed synthetic polymers that mimic the immune system. Using a simple charge, these resultant polymers are capable of hunting down and clinging to specific microbes throughout the body. And, once attached, cause those microbes to rupture as if they'd been hit by an explosive shuriken (or ninja star) -- hence, the name. Of course, anyone … Continue reading

'Bionic Eye:' Duke Procedure Restores Sight to NC Man

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

Durham, NC - Dr. Paul Hahn performs a high definition scan on the left eye of patient Larry Hester, 66, of Raleigh. Hester has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease, that has caused total blindness. Hester is among the first U.S. recipients of the Argus 2 surgically implanted "bionic eye," which he received Wednesday. Larry Hester, the first patient in North Carolina to receive what has been dubbed a bionic eye, has no illusions that he would emerge from surgery at the Duke Eye Center as the Six Million Dollar Man better, stronger, faster. But he says having any amount of vision restored after 33 years of failing eyesight and, eventually, total blindness, will be an improvement that is beyond miraculous. This is something wonderful and extraordinary, and its happening in our lives! Hester said. Hester is just the seventh person in the United States to have received the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System since its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last year. Dr. Paul Hahn of the Duke Eye Center implanted the device Wednesday and will work with Hester over the next weeks and months to activate and calibrate the implant, which provides electrical stimulation to … Continue reading
