Study examines vitiligo, alopecia areata and chronic graft vs. host disease

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 10-Sep-2014 Contact: NCI Press Officers ncipressofficers@mail.nih.gov 301-496-6641 The JAMA Network Journals @JAMA_current Vitiligo (depigmentation of the skin) and alopecia areata (AA, patchy or complete hair loss) in patients with chronic graft-vs-host disease (GvHD) following a stem cell transplant appear to be associated with having a female donor and the sex mismatch of a female donor and male recipient. GvHD is a frequent complication of donor stem cell transplants because donor cells can attack the recipient's body and cause death and other illnesses. The skin is the most commonly affected organ. The underlying biology of chronic GvHD has not been fully explained. The authors looked for laboratory markers, transplant-related and other factors associated with vitiligo and/or AA in patients with chronic GvHD. The study conducted by the NIH included 282 adult and pediatric patients with chronic GvHD seen under an NIH protocol between 2004 and 2013. A total of 15 patients (5.3 percent) from among 282 participants with vitiligo and/or AA were identified. The most common reasons for transplantation were types of leukemia. In the study group, a donor who is female, in particular a female donor and a male recipient sex mismatch, as well as the presence … Continue reading

Quinn Clinics Doctor Issues Expert Advice on Dermal Fillers

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

Bristol (PRWEB UK) 11 September 2014 Quinn Clinics founder and aesthetic physician, Dr John Quinn, has had a 3-page feature published in Aesthetics Magazine September 2014 in the Clinical Focus section which is reserved for the most experienced practitioners to share their knowledge and best practice recommendations. The article covers the potentially sensitive issue of dermal filler complications in an honest and comprehensive manner. While this information is directed at fellow non-surgical treatment practitioners, the advice in the article offers a valuable insight for any client or patient looking to have treatment, giving them an understanding of the steps that a good practitioner should be taking to minimise the risk of complication. Dr Quinn explains: Complications are, unfortunately, inherent to any medical procedure. When they occur in the NHS, there is a degree of understanding amongst patients and medical professionals. In the private sector where cosmetic medicine exists, complications are less accepted and there is a propensity for the incident to become a story in a daily newspaper. With so much of our education being sponsored by drug companies, complications have previously been glossed over and many of us have personal experience of insufficient or no support at all in … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

Dr Steve Merten of Pure Aesthetics Provides a Look at What Aesthetic Concerns Require Facelift Surgery Compared to Less Invasive Cosmetic Treatment Options SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA--(Marketwired - Sep 11, 2014) - Dr Steve Merten, a plastic surgeon in Sydney, provides each of his facial rejuvenation patients with a tailored treatment plan to help them reach their ideal aesthetic outcome. While some patients can reach their goals through minimally invasive procedures, Dr Merten explains that others may require the more in-depth option of facelift surgery. The surgeon says that both surgical and non-surgical options have the potential to take years off of one's appearance, but depending on the patient, one may be more appropriate. There are many factors that Dr Merten looks at with each patient before he can determine whether surgical or non-surgical procedures will provide the best results. These include: Each of these factors helps Dr Merten determine which treatment method would be best for each patient. He says that older patients with severe signs of aging may benefit more from plastic surgery, while younger patients may get great results with cosmetic procedures, like dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. During the initial consultation, Dr Merten discusses what the patient hopes … Continue reading

BioEden's Chief Scientific Officer Says Viable Stem Cells Can Be Found in Adult Teeth

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

(PRWEB UK) 11 September 2014 Without doubt the best stem cells are those found in the baby teeth of young children. Why? Apart from their unique ability to morph and change into other stem cells, thus treating a far wider range of illnesses and conditions, mesenchymal stem cells can proliferate outside the body, and where children are concerned no tooth extraction is needed as they fall out naturally. Above all it is important to remember that the best type of cells are those which are young, and therefore have not been contaminated by a lifetime of use and exposure. So does that mean for adults there is no hope for stem cell retrieval from their adult teeth and little chance of success if they are needed in stem cell therapy? Not necessarily, says Mike Byrom, Chief Scientific Officer at specialist tooth stem cell bank, BioEden. Stem cell therapy is not a black and white type of event. There are varying degrees of success based on many factors of which the capacity of the cells is one. The functional capacity of a 44 year old cell is not as good as that of a 6 year old but that does not … Continue reading

After FDA Approval, Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy Patient Receives First Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Treatment in the …

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

Wichita, KS (PRWEB) September 10, 2014 Ryan Benton, a 28 year-old Duchennes muscular dystrophy patient from Wichita, Kansas, received his first umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell treatment yesterday following US FDA approval of his doctors application for a single patient, investigational new drug (IND) for compassionate use. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rapidly progressive form of muscular dystrophy that occurs primarily in boys. It is caused by an alteration (mutation) in a gene, called the DMD gene, which causes the muscles to stop producing the protein dystrophin. Individuals who have DMD experience progressive loss of muscle function and weakness, which begins in the lower limbs and leads to progressively worsening disability. Death usually occurs by age 25, typically from lung disorders. There is no known cure for DMD. This trial, officially entitled Allogeneic transplantation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC) for a single male patient with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) marks the first time the FDA has approved an investigational allogeneic stem cell treatment for Duchennes in the United States. Ryan received his first intramuscular stem cell injections from allergy and immunology specialist, Van Strickland, M.D at Asthma and Allergy Specialists in Wichita, Kansas. He will … Continue reading
