Instead of Poppies, Engineering Microbes to Make Morphine

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2014

This article was originally published on The Conversation. The past few decades have seen enormous progress being made in synthetic biology the idea that simple biological parts can be tweaked to do our bidding. One of the main targets has been hacking the biological machinery that nature uses to produce chemicals. The hope is once we understand enough we might be able to design processes that convert cheap feedstock, such as sugar and amino acids, into drugs or fuels. These production lines can then be installed into microbes, effectively turning living cells into factories. Taking a leap in that direction, researchers from Stanford University have created a version of bakers yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) that contains genetic material of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), bringing the morphine microbial factory one step closer to reality. These results published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology represent a significant scientific success, but eliminating the need to grow poppies may still be years away. If dog has been mans best friend for thousands of years or more, the humble yeast has long been mans second-best friend. The single-cell organism has been exploited by human societies to produce alcoholic beverages or bread for more than 4,000 … Continue reading

Eastern Michigan University biology professor receives national honors

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2014

YPSILANTI -- In the nearly six years professor Anne Casper has been teaching biology at Eastern Michigan University, she has mentored 17 undergraduate students and five masters students, encouraging them as they learned to conduct scientific research. Caspers commitment to her students was recognized recently when she won an honorable mention for superior mentorship of undergraduate students in research. The Council on Undergraduate Research presented the award in the outstanding biology mentor division for young researchers. The council, founded in 1978, supports and promotes high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship. Membership includes nearly 10,000 individuals and more than 650 colleges and universities. Only one award and two honorable mentions were awarded nationally this year in Caspers category of six or less years of experience. Caspers award was a book on mentoring undergraduate researchers. This was quite a surprise, said Casper, of Ann Arbor. Its a national award so when I applied, I put together the most competitive application I could and hoped for the best. Nomination requirements included submitting a CV (resume), a letter of support from a colleague and two letters of support from undergraduate students. Leading biologists from around the country judged the competition. Professor Casper is … Continue reading

ABC has released the Greys Anatomy season 11 premiere synopsis and it gives fans a hint of the changes to come now that Cristina has left Seattle. The Greys Anatomy season 11 premiere, I Must Have Lost It On The Wind, synopsis is: With Cristina gone, a new doctor, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), making the rounds and Derek wanting to move to Washington DC, Meredith struggles to regain a sense of normalcy both at home and in the hospital. Meanwhile, Callie and Arizona come to a decision about surrogacy, Amelia overhears a big secret, Bailey realizes she will have to fight Alex for Cristinas board seat and a freak accident causes two teenagers to be caught in a very compromising position Its no surprise that Maggie will be featured in the premiere episode. In the Greys Anatomy season 10 finale she dropped a bomb (without knowing it) on Weber by revealing that Ellis Grey was her birth mother. So the question is, how long will it be till the secret it out and Meredith learns she has another half-sister? Its also interesting to learn that Alex and Bailey will have to fight for the spot on the board. It seemed … Continue reading

Heart Boy Now Suffers From Muscular Dystrophy

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine-year-old B. Tanasegaran, who has undergone two heart bypass operations, has now been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder that weakens muscles gradually. The pupil of SJK (T) West Country, Kajang, has been told that he could be paralysed within four years. His father Benjamin Thomas said specialist doctors could only prescribe drugs. There is no known cure for DMD and steroids are usually given to control symptoms to improve the quality of life. Benjamin said the Agathiyar Hospital in Chennai treated such patients using ayurveda (an ancient Indian system of natural and holistic medicine) but the cost was RM70,000. I am only a general worker and I have already taken more than RM100,000 in loans to cover the expenses for my sons treatment so far. I am paying the loans back in instalments. I dont have much after buying milk, vitamins and diapers, and paying the monthly rent, he said. Benjamin, who also has a seven-year-old daughter who is being looked after by his mother-in-law, approached MIC Youth Social and Welfare bureau head Arvind Krishnan yesterday for financial assistance to send his son for treatment in India. MIC Youth chief C. Sivarraajh launched the … Continue reading

Ms. Furlong, who founded PPMD 20 years ago, has long admired Ms. Kennedy's work: "Annie and I have had an informal partnership as representatives of the muscular dystrophy community for many years. But to formalize what I consider an incredibly successful working relationship by bringing Annie into the PPMD family feels like kismet. Annie has been one of the muscular dystrophy community's strongest advocates since she was a teenager and she has dedicated her life to helping our children. Small Study Hints Fish Oil Might Ease Tough-to-Treat Epilepsy

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2014

MONDAY, Sept. 8, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Low doses of fish oil may help reduce the number of seizures experienced by people with a form of tough-to-treat epilepsy that no longer responds to drugs, a small new study suggests. The research was led by Dr. Christopher DeGiorgio, of the University of California, Los Angeles, and included 24 people with epilepsy that could no longer be controlled using medications. One expert not connected to the study said many people with epilepsy remain without adequate treatment. "Although medications remain the primary treatment for newly diagnosed epilepsy, more than 35 percent of patients continue to have seizures despite taking antiepileptic drugs," said Dr. David Friedman, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. Friedman said that in these cases, patients often resort to alternative treatments such as epilepsy surgeries, special diets or brain-stimulating devices. So the new study using a common nutrient is intriguing, he said. In the study, the UCLA team gave the patients three separate treatments, each lasting 10 weeks and separated by a period of six weeks. The treatments were: the "low-dose" intervention of three capsules of fish oil (about 1,080 milligrams) a day plus … Continue reading
