Entrepreneurs aim to help stroke victims

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

Austen Hayes, co-founder and chief software architect of Recovr, right, and Larry F. Hodges, co-founder and senior manager, stand by a computer loaded with the company's software, Duck, Duck, Punch. Many stroke survivors face an arduous battle for recovery, but entrepreneurs Austen Hayes, Patrick Dukes and Larry Hodges hope to make it a successful one. Three years ago, the trio created the computer game "Duck, Duck, Punch" to assist stroke patients with arm movement rehabilitation. Now they have formed Recovr Inc. to market the game and expand their idea into new games, to reach more patients and apply their success to other areas of physical therapy. They are one of nine companies under development at The Iron Yard's 13-week digital health accelerator in downtown Spartanburg. "We want to transform every type of physical impairment," said Dukes, chief technology officer of Recovr. "We want to create a holistic suite of games." After simply surviving the loss of blood flow to the brain that causes a stroke, patients face weeks, months and possibly a lifetime of therapy to regain full use of their body. In many cases, the physical therapy can be monotonous and taxing mentally and emotionally as patients struggle with … Continue reading

Muldrow Teen Injured In ATV Crash Slated For Treatment In Florida

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

With a little help from some friends, 17-year-old Christian Mayberry of Muldrow will be able to get the rehabilitation he needs. Mayberry, who was severely injured in an ATV crash near Muldrow on Sept. 1, 2013, has been recovering in Fort Smith since March. He previously received treatment in Tulsa before being moved to Methodist Village Health, Rehab and Residential Living, and periodically had been undergoing rehabilitation therapy at the Gregory Kistler Treatment Center. Mayberry suffered a traumatic brain injury and requires long-term rehabilitation. On Wednesday, the family got word that Christian can receive treatment at the Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation in Wauchula, Fla. The hospital specializes in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. For months, the family was unsure that Mayberry would receive the treatment he needs. Although his story has gained widespread, national attention, getting the necessary treatment from a local facility in Oklahoma or Arkansas seemed unfeasible, said Christians mother, Kim Mayberry. The family learned of the Florida facility after they were put in touch with a woman from Tampa whose son had suffered a similar injury after an ATV accident. The woman mentioned the hospital, and after a few phone calls, Kim Mayberry and other members of … Continue reading

New study on corneal eye disease

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

Scientists at NUI Galway may be able to reduce the rejection rate of corneal transplant operations, meaning the number of people rendered blind from corneal eye disease may decrease. The research, which uses stem cells, could lead to more patients holding onto their sight, if the technique can be replicated in humans. Corneal eye disease is the fourth most common cause of blindness, affecting ten million people worldwide. Corneal transplants are the most common form of treatment for the condition, and involve the replacement of the damaged cornea with healthy tissue from an organ donor. Although 100,000 people undergo corneal transplants each year, the procedure suffers from a high rejection rate of 30%. However, researchers at the REMEDI regenerative medicine institute at NUI Galway have developed a new system which could reduce rejection rates to as low as 10%. The lab based study, details of which are published in the American Journal of Transplantation, involves the use of a type of stem cell grown from the bone marrow of adult donors, which when administered adjusts the immune system's balance, reducing rejection. A follow up 6m EU funded study is now under way to examine the issue more closely, and will … Continue reading

World's plastic surgery hub

UAE plastic surgery, by the numbers UAE plastic surgery, by the numbers UAE plastic surgery, by the numbers UAE plastic surgery, by the numbers STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- Dr. Jason Diamond knows what it's like to be sought after. The Beverly Hills plastic surgeon -- first made famous by reality show "Dr. 90210" -- has operated on a range of A-list celebrities (though he declines to name them). Yet even he was unprepared for the clamor that met him when he first visited Dubai in what was meant to be a one-time gig as a guest surgeon. "For that week, I literally had people waiting until 2am for a consultation. The waiting room was filled 20 people-deep all day long," he recalls. That was in 2009. Since, Diamond has returned to the city every two to three months as part of a partnership with the American British Surgical and Medical Centre. Over the years, he has enlisted the Who's Who of Beverly Hills surgeons to join him at the practice. "Every time I go, I don't even sit down. I'm running around from 7am until midnight. The demand is literally out the door," he says. In the last couple of … Continue reading

Stem cells could cut high rate of cornea transplant rejection

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

Human trials on the effectiveness of using adult stem cells in the fight against cornea transplant rejection could be under way within the next five years. Corneal eye disease is the fourth most common cause of blindness in the world and affects more than 10 million people worldwide. New research from NUI Galway has found that transplant rejection rates could be reduced to as low as 10% by administering a stem cell grown from the bone marrow of adult donors. Although 100,000 people worldwide undergo cornea transplants each year, about 30% are unsuccessful due to rejection by the patients own immune system. An unhealthy cornea affects vision by scattering or distorting light and causing glare and blurred vision. Corneal transplants are the most widely used treatments where the diseased or scarred cornea is replaced with healthy tissue from an organ donor. Researchers from NUI Galways Regenerative Medicine Institute previously found that mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) release chemicals capable of adjusting the immune system balance in the body. The cells can be readily obtained and grown from the bone marrow of adult donors and the finding led them to study their usefulness in combating cornea transplant rejection. The teams lead scientist, … Continue reading

DAP-funded stem cell research a wrong priority

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

From the perspective of a community physician, the stem cell research, at this point, is not a priority. Given the daunting task of not only curing the present crop of diseases but also preventing them, and of course, building the human resource as the backbone of the health care system these should be the priority. Joseph Carabeo, convenor, Rx Abolish Pork Barrel Movement By ANNE MARXZE D. UMIL Bulatlat.com MANILA Eleazar Sobinsky, president of the Lung Center of the Philippines Employees Association-Alliance of Health Workers cannot decipher how the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) has helped the poor. Of the P115 million ($263,822) DAP funds received by LCP, P70 million ($160,587) was spent for the stem cell research project and the rest was spent for the procurement of equipment. He said if the DAP has helped the poor, why are there more indigent patients waiting in line at the LCPs out-patient department? Joseph Carabeo, convenor of the Rx Abolish Pork Barrel Movement and a community doctor for the past 28 years, said that the stem cell research project does not even help solve the longtime health problems of Filipinos. The stem cell research in LCP is a mispriority, said Carabeo in … Continue reading
