Cold case thaws as Baltimore man is indicted in 1981 murder

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

DNA recovered from a blanket taken from a crime scene decades ago has helped prosecutors bring charges against a Baltimore man they say raped and killed a 75-year-old woman in 1981. Phillip D. Lee, 55, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sex offense in the death of Anna Dorthea Smith. He has been held since mid-August without bail. Police and prosecutors announced his indictment Friday. The indictment "highlights the power of DNA analysis, which led us to this defendant," Baltimore State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said. The case had no suspects until advances in DNA testing helped point investigators to Lee. Investigators have been unable to find any of Smith's relatives to inform them of Lee's arrest. "In essence, the detectives on this case were the victim's last voice," police spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert said. Baltimore's Cold Case Unit, made of one lieutenant and five detectives, juggles several old investigations at the same time. Its members can decide to look at any unsolved homicide or other major crime. Over the years, technology and legislation have enabled the state to expand its collection of DNA from criminals and suspects, increasing the likelihood that detectives can link long-stored evidence to suspects … Continue reading

Fingerprint plus a DNA match, and cold case gets hot

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

By Tim McGlone The Virginian-Pilot September 6, 2014 NORFOLK Her attacker broke in through a back door while she was sleeping. He tied her up and held a knife to her throat. He said he wasn't going to rape her, that he was hungry and just wanted money. But he did rape her. A month later, he returned in the middle of the night to the same house near Ocean View. He bound the woman and her teenage daughter with duct tape and raped the girl. Norfolk police investigated, but the case went cold. Two years later in Kuwait, in 2010, an Army captain was showering when a man whose face was covered by a shirt snuck up behind her holding a box cutter. She tried to fight him, but he began cutting and punching her. He turned her around, then suddenly ran away. Through DNA testing, authorities discovered that the genetic profile matched in Norfolk and in Kuwait. But the attacker's DNA did not match anyone in the FBI's database. About a year ago, Norfolk police discovered a match between a fingerprint found on a condom package at one of the 2008 attacks and a Norfolk man, Amin Jason … Continue reading

Two hurt in Simeon chemistry accident

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2014

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Two staff members were injured in a chemistry accident at a South Side high school Friday afternoon. Authorities were called to Simeon Career Academy, 8147 S. Vincennes, about 12:30 p.m. for an accident that happened during a science experiment, according to police. Preparation for a chemistry lab resulted in a small chemical reaction before class began, Chicago Public Schools spokesman Bill McCaffrey said in a statement. While no students were in the classroom at the time, the school responded immediately and students were evacuated from the building pending clearance from the Fire Department, McCaffrey said. Police said a male teacher suffered chemical burns in the accident and that the school was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Chicago Fire Department HazMat crews responded to the school after the accident, according to Fire Media Affairs. Two people were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The two people transported were school staff members, and no students were injured, according to CPS. Students and staff waited outside or in designated parts of the school while firefighters worked to clear the building. The CTA also provided cooling buses for students who were waiting outside, according to CPS. The rest … Continue reading
