New protagonist in cell reprogramming discovered

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-Sep-2014 Contact: Laia Cendrs laia.cendros@crg.eu 34-933-160-237 Center for Genomic Regulation This news release is available in Spanish. The protein Nanog, a transcription factor, is key to maintaining stem cells in a pluripotent state. Researchers from the Centre for Genomic Regulation have been investigating the role of this protein, and have just published an article in the prestigious journal Cell Reports where they reveal the mechanism whereby Nanog acts. The scientists have discovered that Nanog involves other agents and they have been able to detail their dynamics. In particular, by studying another protein that is also involved in cell reprogramming (beta-catenin) they have been able to improve the knowledge of Nanog's functioning. Cell renewal is a natural process that takes place constantly in our body. For this to happen, we have stem cells that are responsible for generating new cells to replenish and renew those that die. Stem cells give rise to undifferentiated pluripotent cells which have the ability to become any cell type. These pluripotent cells follow a differentiation path towards specialisation, which can produce any cell type from neurones to skin. The scientists want to understand the mechanisms that allow stem cells to either differentiate or … Continue reading

NUI Galway research fights blindness

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

Friday, September 05 11:49:24 New research from NUI Galway is using adult stem cells in the fight against cornea transplant rejection. The research has been published in the American Journal of Transplantation, and underpins a pan-European project which hopes to help the 100,000 people worldwide who undergo cornea transplant procedures each year. Corneal eye disease is the fourth most common cause of blindness in the world and it affects more than 10 million people worldwide. An unhealthy cornea affects vision by scattering or distorting light and causing glare and blurred vision. The most widely used treatment for this condition is cornea transplantation (or keratoplasty) where the diseased or scarred corneal tissue is replaced with healthy tissue from an organ donor. Although these procedures have been performed for over 100 years, unfortunately about 30pc of transplants are unsuccessful due to rejection by the patient's own immune system. Researchers, led by Dr Thomas Ritter from NUI Galway's Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI), showed in a model system that transplant rejection rates could be reduced to as low as 10pc by administering a certain type of stem cell called a mesenchymal stem cell (MSC). MSCs can be readily obtained and grown from the bone … Continue reading

Newer Drug Helps Myeloma Patients Who Can't Have Transplant

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Sept. 3, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A cancer drug that targets the immune system may help improve the outlook for older adults with multiple myeloma, though a stem cell transplant remains the standard of care for relatively younger patients. Those are some of the findings from two studies in the Sept. 4 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that begins in certain white blood cells. In the United States, it accounts for about 1 percent of cancers, and for those who develop it, it's often deadly. About 45 percent of Americans with the disease are still alive five years after diagnosis, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute. For years, the standard treatment -- at least for patients younger than 65 -- has involved removing blood-forming stem cells from the patient's bone marrow or bloodstream, then using high-dose chemo to kill off the myeloma cells. Afterward, the stored stem cells are infused back into the patient, where they aid in recovery. That extends people's cancer remission, but it's not a cure, said Dr. David Avigan, who treats myeloma patients at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. … Continue reading

Numbers losing sight may decrease due to new study

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

Scientists at NUI Galway may be able to reduce the rejection rate of corneal transplant operations, meaning the number of people rendered blind from corneal eye disease may decrease. The research, which uses stem cells, could lead to more patients holding onto their sight, if the technique can be replicated in humans. Corneal eye disease is the fourth most common cause of blindness, affecting 10 million people worldwide. Corneal transplants are the most common form of treatment for the condition, and involve the replacement of the damaged cornea with healthy tissue from an organ donor. Although 100,000 people undergo corneal transplants each year, the procedure suffers from a high rejection rate of 30%. However, researchers at the REMEDI regenerative medicine institute at NUI Galway have developed a new system which could reduce rejection rates to as low as 10%. The lab based study, details of which are published in the American Journal of Transplantation, involves the use of a type of stem cell grown from the bone marrow of adult donors, which when administered adjusts the immune system's balance, reducing rejection. A follow up 6m EU funded study is now underway to examine the issue more closely, and will involve … Continue reading

Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center Now Offering the Non-invasive Cosmetic Procedure Ultherapy in Los Angeles, CA

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 04, 2014 Dr. Nasimeh Yazdani announced today that Ultherapy-- the only non-invasive procedure FDA-approved to lift skin on the neck, on the brow and under the chin -- is now available at Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center. Ultherapy is a non-surgical procedure for the face and neck that stimulates the bodys own natural healing process to lift the skin over time. The use of FDA-cleared ultrasound technology enables physicians, for the first time, to see and then treat the deepest support layers of the skin typically addressed in cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. Ultherapy represents a whole new category within aesthetic medicine, says Dr. Yazdani. It is an ideal cosmetic procedure for those looking for natural yet noticeable results. The treatment typically takes around 90-minutes. Afterward, patients are able to return to normal activities right away, and there are no special measures they need to take. With just one Ultherapy treatment, the lifting process is initiated, but the effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months, as new, stronger collagen and elastin are created. Further improvements can even appear up to six months following a procedure … Continue reading
