Compulsive Poetry In Epilepsy

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

The case of a woman who began compulsively writing poems after being treated for epilepsy offers a rare glimpse into the inner dimension of a neurological disorder. Heres the paper in Neurocase from British neurologists Woollacott and colleagues. The story in a nutshell: the patient, age 76, had been suffering from memory lapses and episodic disturbances of consciousness. An electroencephalography (EEG) test revealed left anterior temporal sharp and slow waves, and the patient was diagnosed with Transient Epileptic Amnesia (TEA). She was prescribed the anti-epileptic drug lamotrigine (25 mg daily), which completely stopped the memory-loss and episodes of unconsciousness. However, this wasnt the end of the matter: Several months after starting lamotrigine, the patient suddenly began to write original verse. Whereas poetry had never previously been among her pastimes, she now produced copious short poems (around 1015 each day). These poems often had a wistful or pessimistic nature, but did not have a moral or religious focus. Her husband characterized them as doggerel because they were generally rhyming and often featured puns and other wordplay she became irritated if attempts were made to disengage her. However, she appeared to derive pleasure from the activity and there was no evidence of … Continue reading

New research offers help for spinal cord patients

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

In a study on rats, researchers at the University of Copenhagen have discovered the cause of the involuntary muscle contractions which patients with severe spinal cord injuries frequently suffer. The findings have just been published in the Journal of Neuroscience and, in the long run, can pave the way for new treatment methods. Three thousand Danish patients suffer from severe spinal cord injuries after being involved in traffic accidents or accidents at work. An injury to the spinal cord is a catastrophe for the individual, and often results in complete or partial paralysis of the person's arms and legs. Despite the paralysis, several patients experience problems with involuntary muscle contractions or spasms which impair the patient's quality of life. The movements are due to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which normally plays a crucial role in relation to our voluntary control of movements by reinforcing the level of activity in the motor neurones when they have to activate the muscles to an extraordinary degree. Research shows that a group of cells in the spinal cord start supplying serotonin in an uncontrolled way following an injury, and this knocks the motor system out of control. "We now have a qualified idea of why … Continue reading

Richland orthodontic practice opens Moses Lake location

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

MOSES LAKE - Drs. Chris Parkinson and Dave Butler are bringing their orthodontic expertise to Moses Lake. The pair, who run Parkinson + Butler Orthodontics in Richland, opened up a second office earlier this month. Their Moses Lake office is located on South Clover Drive, near the Moses Lake High School. Parkinson said they wanted to open an office in this area to better serve some of their existing patients. "We're based in Tri-Cities, but a fair number of our patients come to us from the Moses Lake, Othello and Warden areas so we wanted to do a second location so they don't need to travel to the Tri-Cities to see us," he said. Parkinson said they will split their time between the two offices. "We'll go to Moses Lake as often as necessary and as the practice out there builds and there's more of a need then we'll go out there more often," he said. Parkinson + Butler was formed about a year and a half ago, when Butler moved from Texas to Washington to join Parkinson Orthodontics. Butler said he wanted to move back to the Northwest and sent a letter to Parkinson to see if he knew … Continue reading

Implact of dexamethasone on intelligence and hearing in preterm infants

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-Sep-2014 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research Glucocorticoids are speculated to have a long-term impact on the development of the nervous system and increase the incidence of cerebral palsy in preterm infants. The existing studies concerning the role of dexamethasone in preterm infants are insufficiently reliable owing to short follow-up periods and small sample sizes in clinical studies, or the absence of randomized controlled trials. Ruolin Zhang and co-workers from the Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in China conducted a meta-analysis of 10 relevant randomized controlled trials. They found that dexamethasone may affect the intelligence of preterm infants in the early stages after birth, but may lead to hearing impairment at later stages after birth. These findings published in the Neural Regeneration Research attempt to provide evidence for clinical application of dexamethasone in the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome and chronic lung diseases in preterm infants. ### Article "Effect of dexamethasone on intelligence and hearing in preterm infants: a meta-analysis," by Ruolin Zhang, Tao Bo, Li Shen, Senlin Luo, Jian Li (Department of Pediatrics, Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan Province, China) Zhang RL, Bo T, Shen L, Luo SL, Li J. … Continue reading

Case Backs Brain Device as Wealthy Push Do-Good Investing

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

Source: BrainScope Co. via Bloomberg Researchers in Bethesda, Maryland, have spent eight years developing a handheld device to quickly assess potential brain trauma in injured U.S. soldiers and athletes with concussions. Jean Case and her husband Steve, who co-founded AOL Inc. (AOL), invested in BrainScope Co., the devices developer, through their family office in 2008. The billionaire couple say they are using some of their fortune to help ease some of societys ills while hopefully making a profit. They committed in June to spend $50 million in the coming years on mission-driven investments. A new generation of investors is emerging that wants more than just a financial return, Jean Case, 54, said in an interview. Billions more will go into it. With private wealth at a record, rich investors such as the Cases, members of the Pritzker family and Pierre Omidyar are increasingly looking for ways to put their money to work and do good. Its an investing niche previously limited to a sprinkling of mutual funds that avoided stocks such as tobacco and gun manufacturers. The number of money managers offering impact-investing products has surged 155 percent in the past five years. Impact investing is still a fraction of … Continue reading

Restore Brain Naturally by Using Dr. Allens Device as New Study Shows that Persistent Therapy Can Help People with …

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

London, GB (PRWEB) September 05, 2014 Many aging people experience worsened memory, sleepiness, depression, dizziness and vertigo, i.e. the symptoms related to dementia and cerebral atherosclerosis. A unique Dr. Allens Device for the Treatment of Head and Brain can help to treat these annoying symptoms gradually. It is not surprising, as a recent article White Matter Integrity in Obstructive Sleep Apnea before and after Treatment has shown that structural neural injuries in the brain are reversible, Fine Treatment reveals. According to the article White Matter Integrity in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) before and after Treatment, in the Journal Sleep, volume 37, issue 9, 2014, recovery of cognitive deficits after treatment is consistent with the presence of a reversible structural neural injury in OSA in patients who were compliant with treatment. Dr. Rosenberg, medical consultant from Arizona, in his article Restore Your Brain by Treating Sleep Apnea, dated September 3, 2014, in the Everyday Health, made remarkable notes about Italian research: This study demonstrates that sleep apnea can, and does, cause serious damage to our brains. It also shows that these changes are reversible when one adheres to therapy. The most important realization I took away from this study, is the … Continue reading
