Boomer Health: Is ALS breakthrough imminent?

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2014

Maybe youve already dumped chilled water atop your head and encouraged friends and loved ones to do likewise by taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Or, perhaps inspired by seeing the innumerable videos of people doing the Ice Bucket Challenge, youve made a donation to the cause, thereby contributing to the unprecedented tens of millions of dollars that this grassroots initiative has raised. Regardless, its likely youve heard more about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis aka Lou Gehrigs disease in the past month than the world had in the 75 years combined since the Yankees Hall of Famer made his legendary luckiest man on the face of the earth retirement speech. Of course, we here at The Post are all too familiar with ALS. Our colleague, former award-winning courts reporter and best-selling author Susan Spencer-Wendel, succumbed at age 47 to the neurodegenerative condition earlier this summer, three years after being diagnosed. What is ALS? ALS is a progressive, invariably fatal disease that disables the bodys motor neurons which are specialized nerve cells in the brain and spine. Experts believe that, in 90 percent of ALS cases, the cause is sporadic meaning there is no identifiable origin. Though the symptoms are initially subtle … Continue reading

UCB Says FDA Approves SNDA For VIMPAT

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2014

By RTT News, September 01, 2014, 03:48:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - UCB announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a supplemental new drug application (sNDA) for VIMPAT (lacosamide) C-V as monotherapy in the treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients with epilepsy aged 17 years and older. This is a new indication for VIMPAT which is already approved in the U.S. as adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures in patients in this age group. This new indication means that adults with partial-onset seizures can be initiated on VIMPAT monotherapy, and patients already on an anti-epileptic drug can be converted to VIMPAT monotherapy. UCB also announced that the FDA has approved a new single loading dose administration option for all formulations of VIMPAT, when used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients with epilepsy aged 17 years and older. The new U.S. monotherapy approval for VIMPAT is based on a Phase 3 historical-control conversion to lacosamide monotherapy study in adult epilepsy patients with partial-onset seizures. The study met its primary endpoint, demonstrating that the exit percentage, defined as the estimated percentage of patients meeting pre-defined exit criteria, for patients converting to lacosamide 400 mg/day … Continue reading

People suffering from strokes are waiting longer to be treated in a specialist unit, according to official figures

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2014

People suffering from strokes in south west Hertfordshire are waiting longer to be treated in a specialist unit, according to figures released by the trust in charge of Watford General Hospital. NHS guidelines state that 90 per cent of patients with a suspected stroke must be sent to a specialist stroke unit within four hours of being admitted to hospital. However, the latest figures show that since April, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has transferred 61.5 per cent of patients within that time frame, and in May, it recorded 52.4 per cent. The trust has blamed a lack of beds in the stroke unit and pressure in the A&E department for their failure to reach the national target in May, but stressed patients still received specialist care once admitted to A&E. Dr Mike van der Watt, medical director for the trust, said, "We are committed to ensuring patients who have had a suspected stroke receive the treatment they need as quickly as possible. "Our priority is to ensure they receive the expert treatment they need on arrival in A&E, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "Whilst in the emergency care setting, patients will receive specialist … Continue reading

Women at greater stroke risk from resistant hypertension

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2014

London, Sep 1: Resistant hypertension increases the risk of stroke by 35 per cent in women and 20 per cent in elderly patients, according to new research. The findings presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Barcelona by Dr Kuo-Yang Wang from Taiwan suggest that gender and age should be added to the risk stratification of resistant hypertension to enable more appropriate treatment decisions. Hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Patients with hypertension that do not respond to conventional drug treatments, called resistant hypertension, are at even higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, Wang said. Little is known about the prognosis of resistant hypertension in the Asian population. Our study compared the risk of all-cause mortality, acute coronary syndrome, and stroke between patients with resistant hypertension and non-resistant hypertension. We aimed to discover the impact of resistant hypertension on Taiwanese patients, and to ascertain whether patient characteristics influence the association between resistant hypertension and adverse outcomes, said Wang. Patients with hypertension aged 45 years and older were identified from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Medical records of 111,986 patients from 2000 to 2011 were reviewed for this study. Some … Continue reading

With recent revelations of misconduct involving its research on so-called STAP cells, stem cell researcher Haruko Obokata and her employer, Riken Institute, have come under intense scrutiny and criticism. Last week, the nations largest science research institute announced an action plan to avoid similar scandals from recurring. It remained vague on whether STAP cells really exist, as claimed by Obokata, despite the recent retractions of two STAP papers authored by a team of researchers led by her that claimed to have discovered a new kind of cell that could grow into any type of tissue in the body. Although the government-backed institute has a track record of producing Nobel Prize-winning researchers, it now faces massive pressure to clean up its act and regain the trust of officials and the public alike. When was Riken established and why? Riken was founded in 1917 in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, initially as a private research foundation, by industrialist and entrepreneur Eiichi Shibusawa. Shibusawa felt it was necessary for Japan to have an institution solely for science, when the world was moving away from mechanical industries. Shibusawa, sometimes called the father of Japanese capitalism, also established the First National Bank (the predecessor of todays Mizuho … Continue reading

Central biobank for drug research

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2014

5 hours ago The biobank comprises three cryotanks, equipped with cooled protective hoods, and a transfer station from which the sample containers are transported via a rail system. There is enough space for approximately 60,000 samples. Credit: Fraunhofer IBMT For the development of new drugs it is crucial to work with stem cells, as these allow scientists to study the effects of new active pharmaceutical ingredients. But it has always been difficult to derive enough stem cells of the right quality and in the right timeframe. A central biobank is about to remedy the situation. Human stem cells allow scientists to assess how patients are likely to respond to new drugs and to examine how illnesses come about. For a few years now, it has been possible to take tissue samples from adults and use reverse programming to artificially produce stem cells, which have the potential to create any kind of cell found in the human body. Before this discovery, pharmaceutical researchers had to use adult stem cells or primary cells, which have a more limited potential. Another option is to use stem cells derived from human embryos, but quite apart from the ethical considerations these cells are available only … Continue reading
