PM Modi meets Nobel prize winner Yamanaka, discusses treatment of sickle cell anaemia remedy

Posted: Published on August 31st, 2014

KYOTO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday discussed cooperation with Japan to combat sickle cell anaemia that is prevalent in India's tribal regions, an official said. Modi met Shinya Yamanaka, Japan's stem cell pioneer and 2012 Nobel Prize winner, at Kyoto University and discussed treatment of the disease. They discussed the "possibilities of sickle cell anaemia cure" and "prospects of cooperation among Indian and Japanese institutes", tweeted an external affairs ministry spokesman. "The prime minister expressed concern over the prevalence of sickle cell anaemia, especially among tribal communities across India," a statement by the Indian government said. Sickling decreases the cells' flexibility and results in a risk of various life threatening complications. It mostly occurs in regions where malaria is rampant. "The prime minister urged Yamanaka to work towards a cure for this," the statement said. Yamanaka said there were currently no Indian researchers at his institute, the Centre for iPS Cell Research and Application, and "he would like Indian scientists to conduct research at the institute". In Japan, Modi discusses sickle cell treatment with Nobel laureate

Modi talks with Nobel Laureate Prof Yamanaka about treatment of sickle cell anaemia. Photograph: MEA/Facebook Japan on Sunday agreed to work with India in developing a treatment for the sickle cell anaemia after Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought help for finding remedy to the deadly disease commonly found among tribals in India. Modi, who has been keenly looking for a remedy to the disease since his days as the chief minister of Gujarat, discussed the issue with Nobel Prize winner for Medicine (2012) S Yamanaka when he visited the Kyoto University. The PM, on the second day of his tour, raised the issue during his visit to the stem cell research facility and discussed whether Japan could be of help in this regard. Yamanaka is the director of the university. "I wanted to understand stem cell research because cultural heritage matters as much to me as scientific heritage. I want to integrate both to make India a developed country. It was a good opportunity for me," Modi said. The PM discussed the possibility of cooperation in finding a treatment for the disease, said External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin. Sources said the Japanese side said it would work with India … Continue reading

Efficacy of new gene therapy approach for toxin exposures shown in mouse study

Posted: Published on August 31st, 2014

The current method to treat acute toxin poisoning is to inject antibodies, commonly produced in animals, to neutralize the toxin. But this method has challenges ranging from safety to difficulties in developing, producing and maintaining the anti-serums in large quantities. New research led by Charles Shoemaker, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, shows that gene therapy may offer significant advantages in prevention and treatment of botulism exposure over current methods. The findings of the National Institutes of Health funded study appear in the August 29 issue of PLOS ONE. Shoemaker has been studying gene therapy as a novel way to treat diseases such as botulism, a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Despite the relatively small number of botulism poisoning cases nationally, there are global concerns that the toxin can be produced easily and inexpensively for bioterrorism use. Botulism, like E. coli food poisoning and C. difficile infection, is a toxin-mediated disease, meaning it occurs from a toxin that is produced by a microbial infection. Shoemaker's previously reported antitoxin treatments use proteins produced … Continue reading

Jim McKee: A medical college for Bethany

Posted: Published on August 31st, 2014

Today, Nebraskas physicians are all schooled in Omaha, but at the time the Nebraska Territory formed, a few local doctors existed in name only, and many, like attorneys, simply studied under practicing professionals. As time progressed, doctors simply had to pass state exams to establish practices. By statehood in 1867, cities, often little more than villages, felt the need to establish colleges, and a few considered medical colleges as proof that they were indeed successful. Lincoln, and even Bethany, Nebraska, were not immune to that lofty goal. In 1883, the Nebraska Legislature authorized creation of three medical departments in the University of Nebraska. Unfortunately, Lincolns size, which could not provide adequate specimens or potential learning patients, led to the medical schools closure in 1887, ultimately to be reborn in Omaha. Eclectic medicine of the day could be compared loosely to alternative medicine today and was often practiced in conjunction with regular medicine. Proponents employed common curatives, were opposed to bloodletting and did not employ mercury, arsenic or other chemicals they considered poisons. Several Lincoln eclectic physicians saw the potential demise of the universitys medical school. Doctors Latta, Bently, Van Camp, Grimes and others approached Nebraska Christian University in Bethany, Nebraska, … Continue reading
