Health Beat: Stroke signs: 3 hour deadline

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2014

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The day started liked any other for Brad and Sara Fahrenkamp with breakfast before work with their two little boys. But suddenly, Brad got very sick. "He said, 'I just dont feel well. I feel kind of nauseous and flu-like. Im just going to stay home today,'" Sara recalled. Throughout their marriage, Brad had always been healthy. By nighttime, they knew something was very wrong. "My left arm and part of my face were numb and tingling," Brad said. "I went to stand up to dress myself and I fell right to the floor." "I was absolutely shocked when the physician in the ER said to us, 'Your husband has had not just one stroke, but three strokes,'" Sara said. A stroke occurs when blood flow is blocked to the brain or blood leaks in the brain and damages cells. Symptoms occur in the parts of the body controlled by those cells. "The quicker that you can obtain emergency services and emergency care, the quicker you can receive treatment and medication that can hopefully stop the stroke or prevent it from becoming worse," said Paige Thomas, a neurological physical therapist for the University of Cincinnati. That's why … Continue reading

Celebrity Big Brother: brain injury charity attacks Channel 5 over Gary Busey 'bullying'

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2014

Brain injury can have cognitive, behavioural and emotional consequences, which differ from person to person, Peter McCabe, chief executive of Headway UK, told The Telegraph. It can lead to people exhibiting unpredictable, impulsive or erratic behaviour, particularly when in a stressful or unfamiliar environment. Mr Busey is exhibiting challenging behaviour in the house, which may well be as a result of his brain injury. Busey, who lives in Los Angeles, starred in the action films Lethal Weapon and Point Break and was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar in 1978 for his role in The Buddy Holly Story. Now more famous for his eccentric behaviour and his appearance on reality TV shows, he has attracted the opprobrium of a number of his fellow contestants in the Big Brother house, including Ricci Guarnaccio, who stars in the MTV show Geordie Shore, and James Jordan, a professional dancer who has appeared on BBC Ones Strictly Come Dancing. He has been the butt of several jokes and last night was singled out for stinging criticism by a number of his fellow housemates in face-to-face evictions, in which each contestant was asked to name the person they most wanted to leave the show. In … Continue reading

Magnetic Electrical Current Boosts Memory

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2014

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on August 29, 2014 External stimulation of the brain with electrical current using magnetic pulses has been found to improve memory. Researchers from Northwestern Medicine believe the discovery may signal a new method to treat memory impairments associated with diseases such as stroke, early Alzheimers disease, cardiac arrest, and traumatic brain injury. Additionally, investigators believe the technique may also help memory problems associated with normal aging. We show for the first time that you can specifically change memory functions of the brain in adults without surgery or drugs, which have not proven effective, said senior author Dr.Joel Voss, assistant professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. This noninvasive stimulation improves the ability to learn new things. It has tremendous potential for treating memory disorders. The study will be published in a forthcoming edition of Science. Researcher report the investigation is the first to demonstrate that remembering events requires a collection of many brain regions to work in combination with the hippocampus similar to a symphony orchestra. The electrical stimulation is like giving the brain regions a more talented conductor so they play … Continue reading

UAE fertility clinics report genetic screening surge

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2014

Abu Dhabi: More and more couples across the UAE are today undergoing genetic testing in a bid to have successful pregnancies and healthy babies, medical experts say. Genetic tests can help parents to select the gender of their baby or to ensure that the child is not susceptible to genetic diseases. Increased awareness has led to a surge in the number of residents who opt for genetic analyses. Parents understand that it is easier and better to raise a healthy baby than one with an incurable genetic condition, and removing the gene that leads to the abnormality is just one of many treatments possible with the advances in reproductive medicine, Dr Michael Fakih, founder and medical director at renowned fertility clinic Fakih IVF, told Gulf News. One in every five couples in the UAE currently requires fertility treatment and with clinics often offering testing facilities in-house, genetic analysis has gained acceptance, experts say. Compared to last year, we have seen a 30 per cent rise in the number of couples who seek genetic tests, especially parents who want to ensure that their babies are not born with hereditary disorders, said Dr Ali Hellani, reproductive geneticist at Fakih IVF. The facility … Continue reading

Medicine's Next Big Mission: Understanding Wellness

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2014

The bioengineering pioneer Leroy Hood has seen vast changes in medicine over his decades in the biz, in part thanks to his own work on automated DNA sequencing. But he's not much for looking back he's too busy envisioning a future model of medicine. "Contemporary medicine is all about disease, and not about wellness," he says. Hood says the medical profession must learn to measure and maximize wellness, and he's happy to show the way. At the annual meeting of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, Hood presented his vision for "P4 medicine," which is predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory. In a keynote speech, he described the 100K Wellness Project he launched this year as president of the Institute for Systems Biology. The ambitious study aims to enroll 100,000 participants and track their biometrics over 20 years (funding permitting). Hood wants to quantify wellness, and also to provide "actionable information" to the participants. In March, the project enrolled 108 healthy people to take part in the pilot study. At the end of 2014 the project will scale up to 1000 participants, with the big steps to 10,000 and then 100,000 people expected in the next few years. Each … Continue reading

The Adult Stem Cell Technology Center, LLC Participates in Multiple Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Conferences …

Posted: Published on August 29th, 2014

Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 29, 2014 A major challenge before new biotechnology start-up companies, especially ones in the biotech start-up dense realm of Boston-Cambridge, is gaining visibility that can lead to important strategic alliances and able investors. James Sherley, the Director of Bostons Adult Stem Cell Technology Center, LLC (ASCTC), has made increasing the local and national visibility of his company an important priority since he started the company in September 2013. In addition to a social media marketing campaign launched earlier in July of this year, Director Sherley has targeted research and development conferences both nationally and internationally to increase industry awareness of ASCTCs unique portfolio of intellectual property available for licensing and its current commercial development targets. The company is focused on producing two products to address two important needs in drug development and regenerative medicine, respectively, that it is uniquely positioned to address. ASCTCs most advanced product is an assay that can detect, very early in the drug development pipeline, drug candidates that will ultimately fail because of their toxicity to tissue stem cells. ASCTC developed the new technology in partnership with AlphaSTAR, Corporation, located in Long Beach, California. Currently, such lurking drugs are not detected until … Continue reading

New tool aids stem cell engineering for medical research

Posted: Published on August 29th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 28-Aug-2014 Contact: Robert Nellis newsbureau@mayo.edu 507-284-5005 Mayo Clinic ROCHESTER, Minn. A Mayo Clinic researcher and his collaborators have developed an online analytic tool that will speed up and enhance the process of re-engineering cells for biomedical investigation. CellNet is a free-use Internet platform that uses network biology methods to aid stem cell engineering. Details of CellNet and its application to stem cell engineering are described in two back-to-back papers in the journal Cell. "This free platform has a broad range of uses for all types of cell-based investigations and can potentially offer help to people working on all types of cancer," says Hu Li, Ph.D., investigator in the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine and Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, and co-lead investigator in the two works. "CellNet will indicate how closely an engineered cell resembles the real counterpart and even suggests ways to adjust the engineering." The network biology platform contains data on a wide range of cells and details on what is known about those cell types. Researchers say the platform can be applied to almost any study and allows users to refine the engineering process. In the long term, it should provide … Continue reading
