Soluble Science: Making Tie-Dye T-Shirts with Permanent Markers

Posted: Published on August 28th, 2014

A chemistry challenge from Science Buddies Key concepts Chemistry Solubility Solutions Inks Dyes Introduction Have you ever made a tie-dyed T-shirt? It can be a lot of fun to dye a shirt in bright colors with spiraling designs. In this science activity you will get to dye a T-shirt with your own colorful artwork using only permanent markers. Along the way, you'll find out how solubility helps your drawings leave beautiful designs on the fabric. Background You've probably noticed that when a drop of water lands on a piece of paper with words or a picture printed on it, sometimes the ink runs. When this happens, the drop of water is at least partially absorbed into the paper and then flows through it. As the water moves, it carries the ink particles along with it. Why does the water move the ink? This is because of solubilitythe ink has combined with the water. Solubility is an important property of matter. If a chemical is soluble in water, then the chemical will dissolve, or appear to disappear, when it's added to wateror vice versa. This is why the ink can dissolve in the drop of water on the paper and then … Continue reading

Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Cardiology Team Wins Platinum

Posted: Published on August 28th, 2014

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va.--The cardiology team at Martha Jefferson Hospital is enjoying better than gold-standard recognition for its work in taking care of heart patients in and around the community. After years and years of streamlining and fine-tuning, the cardiology team at Martha Jefferson has been given the platinum award, which is the highest award possible from the American College of Cardiology. The Martha Jefferson Cardiology Department joins about 225 other hospitals across the country in achieving platinum status. The award is based on a national database that benchmarks quality in cardiac care and starts from the time a heart attack victim becomes a patient, on through the patient's progress during their stay and beyond to their release home. Medical director of the hospital's cardiac catheter lab tells Newsplex the keys to snagging the top award were taking a total team approach and building a culture that is truly patient-centered. "It's no longer about my area or your area. It's about taking care of the patient and doing what's best for the patient, said Dr. Joshua Fischer. Once you have that and once you have that mindset, once you have that team approach of everybody coming together to work toward that … Continue reading

biotechnology, the use of biology to solve problems and make useful products. The most prominent area of biotechnology is the production of therapeutic proteins and other drugs through genetic engineering. People have been harnessing biological processes to improve their quality of life for some 10,000 years, beginning with the first agricultural communities. Approximately 6,000 years ago, humans began to tap the biological processes of microorganisms in order to make bread, alcoholic beverages, and cheese and to preserve dairy products. But such processes are not what is meant today by biotechnology, a term first widely applied to the molecular and cellular technologies that began to emerge in the 1960s and 70s. A fledgling biotech industry began to coalesce in the mid- to late 1970s, led by Genentech, a pharmaceutical company established in 1976 by Robert A. Swanson and Herbert W. Boyer to commercialize the recombinant DNA technology pioneered by Boyer and Stanley N. Cohen. Early companies such as Genentech, Amgen, Biogen, Cetus, and Genex began by manufacturing genetically engineered substances primarily for medical and environmental uses. For more than a decade, the biotechnology industry was dominated by recombinant DNA technology, or genetic engineering. This technique consists of splicing the gene for a … Continue reading
