Surgeons Have Identified the Ideal Female Belly Button

Image: Getty Images/Onoky Hey you! Yeah, you! Feeling pretty OK about the way you look today? Got a little extra spring in your step? Well, stop it right now and take a look down at your stomach and get out your ruler! Because you yes you may very well have an imperfect belly button. I know, right? Like you didn't have enough to worry about. Via Daily Mail: Surgeons at the University of Singapore's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, whose research was published in ASJ, analyzed images of 37 Playboy Playmates (really) to assess the ideal length, shape and position of the navel. With the help of a computerized tool called an 'Aesthetic Analyzer', they established that a perfect belly button has a ratio of 46:54, and a midline horizontal position. The ideal length is 5 percent of the length from the lower breastbone to the lower part of the vulvar cleft, and the 'hood,' or flap, is very small. Luckily, I am terrible at math and therefore have absolutely no interest in using it in order to find things wrong with myself. In fact, I can think of few things I would be less likely to voluntarily do. … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment helps arthritic dogs

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2014

Stem cells heal pooches in pain MIKE MATHER NICK REED/Fairfax NZ HAPPY HOUND: Shiloh with owner Adele Holland. She is a different dog since having stem cell injections to relieve arthritis pain, Holland says. Three years ago australian shepherd dog Shiloh was diagnosed with a severe case of degenerative arthritis that left her limping slowly towards her deathbed. As time went on, and to the dismay of her Horotiu family, Shiloh became increasingly stiff, was soon no longer able to jump, could barely walk without pain, and eventually had to be carried outside to the toilet. But, remarkably, the 10-year-old pet is not only still alive today, she is walking and jumping without a trace of pain. It's a physical improvement her owner Adele Holland describes as "nothing short of a miracle". Shiloh's recovery is something dozens of arthritic Waikato dogs have now experienced after stem cell injections, a treatment technique adopted by Hamilton veterinarian practice CareVets. Veterinarian Ivan Aleksic said Shiloh was the first dog to receive stem cells. His practice had successfully repeated the $2600 treatment on more than 40 dogs with arthritis. He described stem cells as "the body's own repair cells". "They have the ability to … Continue reading

Getting the most of mesenchymal stem cell transplants …

The fat cells shown in yellow are descended from transplanted human mesenchymal stem cells (green) inside of a mouse after co-transplantation. The red stain shows native mouse fat cells.(Courtesy Juan Melero-Martin) Stem cell scientists had what first appeared to be an easy win for regenerative medicine when they discovered mesenchymal stem cells several decades ago. These cells, found in the bone marrow, can give rise to bone, fat and muscle tissue, and have been used in hundreds of clinical trials for tissue repair. Uses range from tissue protection in heart attack and stroke to immune modification in multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Unfortunately, the results of these trials have been underwhelming. One challenge is that these stem cells dont stick around in the body long enough to benefit the patient. But scientists at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) and Boston Childrens Hospital arent ready to give up. A research team led by Juan Melero-Martin, PhD, with surgical research fellow Ruei-Zeng Lin, PhD, recently found that transplanting mesenchymal stem cells along with blood vessel-forming cells, naturally found in the circulation, improves results. This co-transplantation keeps the mesenchymal stem cells alive longer in miceup to a few weeks compared to hoursgiving the … Continue reading

Federal Officials Order Medicaid To Cover Autism Services

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

State Medicaid programs now have to cover a range of treatments for autism. iStockphoto hide caption State Medicaid programs now have to cover a range of treatments for autism. When Yuri Maldonado's 6-year-old son was diagnosed with autism four years ago, she learned that getting him the therapy he needed from California's Medicaid plan for low-income children was going to be tough. Medi-Cal, as California's plan is called, does provide coverage of autism services for some children who are severely disabled by the disorder, in contrast to many states that offer no autism coverage. But Maldonado's son was approved for 30 hours a week of applied behavioral analysis, a type of behavior modification therapy that has been shown to be effective with autistic children, and she was worried that wasn't enough. So she and her husband, neither of whose jobs offered health insurance, bought an individual private policy for their son, with a $900 monthly price tag, to get him more of the comprehensive therapy. "I don't know any family that can really afford that," says Maldonado. "We made some sacrifices." That should be changing soon. In July, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said comprehensive autism services must … Continue reading

Support sought for stroke survivors

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

The Blenheim wife of a stroke survivor says lack of access to community rehabilitation in Marlborough means stroke patients are falling through the cracks. Marlborough Stroke Club secretary Vyvienne Dunlop heard cases of stroke patients admitted to Wairau Hospital on a Friday and being discharged over the weekend without a stroke plan in place. A briefing paper on stroke services in Nelson Marlborough District Health Board said Wairau does not have a ATR (assessment, treatment and rehabilitation) community rehabilitation team and stroke patients had limited access to outpatient community rehabilitation services after their discharge. There was no lead stroke nurse at Nelson and Wairau hospitals, and up to 50 per cent of stroke patients are discharged without physiotherapy or occupational therapy assessment and advice. Dunlop said it was a huge problem that there was limited community access to physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy. "There are so many of our members that slip through the cracks because there aren't enough physiotherapists and speech language therapists," Dunlop said. "My husband was in hospital for four days after his stroke. He was discharged without a plan in place." Dunlop said a lack of funding and resources contributed to the problem. "Those that don't … Continue reading
