Drug used for DNA repair defects could treat leukemia, other cancers more effectively

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

A team of scientists led by Research Associate Professor Motomi Osato and Professor Yoshiaki Ito from the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) found that a drug originally designed for killing a limited type of cancer cells with DNA repair defects could potentially be used to treat leukemia and other cancers. The new study suggests that treatment with poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors, together with standard chemotherapy drugs, could be more effective in combating leukemia. In the same study, researchers found that the inactivation of RUNX genes causes DNA repair defects and promotes the development of leukemia and other cancers. The study was first published online in the leading journal Cell Reports last month. Unlike other cancers which are more commonly seen in the elderly, leukemia is notorious for its high prevalence among young people. There has been little advancement in the treatment of leukemia. Chemotherapy with or without hematopoietic stem cell transplantation remains the current standard of care, resulting in a cure rate of around 50 per cent. The RUNX family genes are among the most frequently inactivated genes in leukemia and other cancers. According to previous studies, RUNX1 is one … Continue reading

Arturo Valtierra-Payan, center, listens to the first day of testimonay Monday in the 243rd District Court. Valtierra-Payan is charged in a series of sexual assaults that occurred in the Manhattan Heights neighborhood last year. (RUBEN R RAMIREZ EL PASO TIMES) Replay Twitter updates: Trial for accused Manhattan Heights predator DNA evidence connecting a man charged with a series of sexual assaults last year in the Manhattan Heights neighborhood to one of the victims was presented Monday at the start of his trial. Arturo Valtierra-Payan's trial began Monday in the 243rd District Court. Valtierra-Payan, 26, is charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one of count each of burglary of habitation and aggravated robbery in the case. Prosecutors opened the trial detailing the night of June 26, 2013 when Valtierra-Payan allegedly broke into a home in the Manhattan Heights neighborhood. According to an opening statement by state prosecutor Penny Hamilton and testimony from law enforcement officers, Valtierra-Payan allegedly attempted to get into the home through a window at about 1 a.m. Valtierra-Payan then allegedly broken down the front door and attempted to rape the woman who lived in the home, Hamilton told jurors. According to multiple law enforcement officers … Continue reading

Cancer leaves a common fingerprint on DNA

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Aug-2014 Contact: Shawna Williams shawna@jhmi.edu 410-955-8236 Johns Hopkins Medicine Regardless of their stage or type, cancers appear to share a telltale signature of widespread changes to the so-called epigenome, according to a team of researchers. In a study published online in Genome Medicine on Aug. 26, the investigators say they have found widespread and distinctive changes in a broad variety of cancers to chemical marks known as methyl groups attached to DNA, which help govern whether genes are turned "on" or "off," and ultimately how the cell behaves. Such reversible chemical marks on DNA are known as epigenetic, and together they make up the epigenome. "Regardless of the type of solid tumor, the pattern of methylation is much different on the genomes of cancerous cells than in healthy cells," says Andrew Feinberg, M.D., M.P.H., a professor of medicine, molecular biology and genetics, oncology, and biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Feinberg led the new study along with Rafael Irizarry, Ph.D., a professor of biostatics at Harvard University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "These changes happen very early in tumor formation, and we think they enable tumor cells to adapt to changes in their environment … Continue reading

Master Lecturer Horvath no longer teaching Chemistry 2

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

James Horvath, a master lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, is no longer teaching General Chemistry 2, or CHM2046, this semester. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences decided to restrict the multi-decade instructor to only working in Chemistry 1 and Chemistry 2 labs. It is not unusual for someones teaching assignments to change at UF, UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes wrote in an email. In this case, the Chemistry Department decided it does not need Dr. Horvath as a lecturer in the year ahead. As a result, he will be able to focus on his laboratory duties. Collin Zeng, a 19-year-old UF biology sophomore and one of Horvaths teaching assistants, said he thinks Horvath should at least be available to those students who wish to truly learn chemistry in-depth, so he created a petition on change.org addressed to the Department of Chemistry asking for Horvath to regain lecturing privileges. Students have had mixed reactions: Some vehemently support Horvath, and some think the department made the right decision. Grant Sinnott, a 19-year-old UF economics and mathematics sophomore, said that as an executive secretary in Student Government, he heard complaints about the class and conducted an in-depth review of the class. Based … Continue reading

John Waugh, emeritus chemistry professor, dies

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

John Waugh, emeritus chemistry professor, dies MIT NEWS OFFICE August 26, 2014 John S. Waugh, an MIT Institute Professor emeritus and professor emeritus in the Department of Chemistry, died Friday, Aug. 22, at the age of 85. Waugh was an authority in chemical physics, known internationally for his work in magnetic resonance. Waughs pioneering work in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) made it possible to study the molecular structures of proteins involved in Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases, diabetes, and many other disorders. NMR uses the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei to unravel the structures and dynamics of substances containing those nuclei. In NMR, the magnetic moments of atomic nuclei are stimulated with static and radiofrequency magnetic fields, and give rise to signals useful in a variety of applications from medical imaging to spectroscopy. He was an extremely humble giant in the development of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, says Sylvia Ceyer, head of MITs Department of Chemistry. His keen wit, razor-sharp intellect, and extraordinary sense of humor made him a treasured jewel amongst his colleagues. Born in Willimantic, Conn., in 1929, Waugh received his bachelors degree from Dartmouth College in 1949, graduating summa cum laude with highest distinction in chemistry. He … Continue reading

Hong: Smart phone apps and science its chemistry

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

Scientists and gamers collaborated to put real chemicals back on the shelves. by Albert Hong 26 August 2014 Believe it or not, science, particularly chemistry, was incredibly popular with American teenage boys around the 1950s, so much so that kids started wanting chemistry sets that contained real chemicals. Some even contained uranium and due to concerns about safety, chemistry sets fell as fast as they had risen during the 60s and 70s. With laws like the Toxic Substances Control Act, chemsets these days are lacking the most important materials needed: actual chemicals. The Chemical Heritage Foundation, an organization trying to incorporate dialougue about science and technology in society, has brought the vintage chemset back with their new iPad game, ChemCrafter, developed by local design studio Bluecadet Interactive. CHF, a local museum/library focused on the history of chemical sciences and more, held their second Game Night on First Friday of this month. The museum floor was open to visitors who wanted to see the history of chemistry and its applications today, including some actual vintage chemistry sets from companies like the Porter Chemical Company and A.C. Gilbert. Amanda Shields, Curator of Fine Arts and Registrar at CHF, detailed the importance that … Continue reading
