ABC's Grey's Anatomy is poised to welcome the former commander in chief. Geena Davis has boarded ABC's Grey's Anatomyand The Hollywood Reporter has the first look at the Oscar winner (The Accidental Tourist) making her rounds through Grey Sloan Memorial. Little is known about Davis' role other than that the Thelma & Louise alum will have a major recurring arc in season 11 as a surgeon at the hospital previously known as Seattle Grace. Below, Davis' character makes her Grey's Anatomy debut in the season 11 premiere, "I Must Have Lost It on the Wind," which takes its title from Elton John's song of the same name. Judging from the photos below, Davis' character could be connected to Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). Ahead of Davis' casting, showrunner Shonda Rhimes told THR that season 11 will explore Callie and Arizona's relationship and the couple's bid to expand their family by way of surrogacy. "It's going to be revealed very quickly that it is a Band-Aid," she said. "It's going to open up the opportunity for them to finally explore everything that's wrong and whether or not they should be together at all or whether or not they want … Continue reading

Healthcare in the Time of Grey's Anatomy

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

How medical television shows have shaped people's perceptions of doctors and diseases Eric McCandless/ABC It is hard to overemphasize how much I loved Greys Anatomy in high school. I loved it superstitiously. Due to a weird set of coincidences, I truly believed that if Greys Anatomy wasnt new that week, I would have a bad week. At the time, it aired on Sunday nights, and I took it as an omen. I would show up to school Monday morning filled with dread after a rerun. I dont blame Shonda Rhimes for my misfortunes anymore. But hours (or, more accurately, probably days) of watchingGrey's, Scrubs, and other medical TV shows has still shaped my life, if research is any indication.Several studies have shown that people who watch a lot of medical shows are more likely to believe certain things about doctors, and about healthcare. Admittedly, these medical shows provide a skewed image of the healthcare system at best. Surely no hospital has had as many romantic pairings as the doctors on Greys (whose 11th season starts next month), and I have to imagine bedpan racing in the workplace is frowned upon. Though you might think that people are perfectly capable of separating … Continue reading

Two case reports of rare stiff person syndrome

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Aug-2014 Contact: Paddy Moore padmoore@ohri.ca 613-737-8899 x73687 The JAMA Network Journals Bottom Line: Two female patients achieved clinical remission from the rare, debilitating neurological disease called stiff person syndrome (SPS, which can be marked by a "tin soldier" gait) after an autologous (from your own body) stem cell transplant that eventually allowed them to return to work and regain their previous functioning. Author: Sheilagh Sanders, M.D., of the University of Ottawa, Canada, and colleagues. Background: SPS is a disease characterized by stiffness of the skeletal muscles, painful muscle spasms and, in severe cases, the disease can prevent movement and walking. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) has been used to successfully treat patients with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and scleroderma, which are resistant to more conventional treatment. A regimen of high-dose chemotherapy and antilymphocyte antibodies rid the body of diseased immune cells (immunoablation) before the immune system is regenerated with auto-HSCs. About the Care Report: The Ottawa Hospital Blood and Marrow Transplant Program performed immunoablation and auto-HSCT on the two women with severe SPS based on a regimen used for multiple sclerosis. Results: One of the women was diagnosed in 2005 at age 48 after … Continue reading

Stem cells for sports injuries; gastric bypass and the gut biome

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

Q: My daughter plays college soccer and ruptured her ACL. The coaches mentioned stem cell injections that some big-name athletes have used to recover from injuries. Should we consider them? Paige R., Chicago A: Professional athletes are always looking for the fastest way to heal their injuries. In 2010, Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon was treated for a torn rotator cuff with injections of fat and bone marrow adult stem cells; he's playing for the Mets this season. And in 2011, Denver Broncos' Peyton Manning opted for injections of his own fat stem cells to try to get over a neck injury. Two years later, he had a record-breaking season and took the Broncos to the Super Bowl. But does this mean the injections worked? Nope. Colon's agent attributes the pitcher's career turnaround to a re-dedication to the game, not the injections, and Manning followed up his stem cell treatment with major surgery and intense rehab (done in secret). There's just no solid evidence yet that injections of adult bone marrow (or fat) stem cells effectively regenerate and repair damaged tendons or ligaments, and you cannot be certain of what the injections contain or their side effects. They often are delivered … Continue reading

Rogue stem cell therapy operators charging thousands for ineffective treatments, researchers say

Posted: Published on August 26th, 2014

ABC Kellie van Meurs (3rd from R) died of a heart attack last month while receiving stem cell treatment in Moscow. Rogue operators in Australia and overseas are charging thousands of dollars for ineffectual stem cell treatments, a leading stem cell research group has warned. And Stem Cells Australia says there is a growing number of patients going overseas for stem cell treatments which are limited in Australia. A loophole in the therapeutic goods legislation means that doctors are legally allowed to treat patients, both here and overseas, with their own stem cells even if that treatment is unsafe or has not been proven effective through clinical trials. Stem Cells Australia believes that dozens of doctors in Australia offer the questionable treatments. "They're selling treatment without any proof of benefit, and without any proof of safety," Associate Professor Megan Munsie, a stem cell biologist at the University of Melbourne, told 7.30. Annie Leverington was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. She was once a talented flamenco dancer and worked as a court stenographer. But in 2002 she noticed something was wrong when her fingers started to "drop" during long trials. Then her feet started to go. Continue reading here: Rogue … Continue reading
