New DNA test for diagnosing diseases linked to childhood blindness

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2014

Researchers in the United Kingdom have demonstrated that advanced DNA testing for congenital cataracts can quickly and accurately diagnose a number of rare diseases marked by childhood blindness, according to a study published online in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Using a single test, doctors were able to tailor care specifically to a child's condition based on their mutations, reducing the time and money spent on diagnosis and enabling earlier treatment and genetic counseling. Each year, between 20,000 and 40,000 children worldwide are born with congenital cataracts, a disease that clouds the lens of the eye and often requires surgery and treatment to prevent blindness.[i] The disease can arise following a maternal infection or be inherited as an isolated abnormality. Congenital cataracts can also appear as a symptom of more than 100 rare diseases, making mutations in the 115 genes associated with congenital cataracts useful as diagnostic markers for the illnesses. Diagnosing these rare diseases previously proved a lengthy, costly and inconclusive process involving numerous clinical assessments and taking a detailed family history. DNA testing, one gene at a time, would have taken years to complete. Employing new DNA sequencing technology, called targeted next-generation sequencing, researchers … Continue reading

DNA evidence to be stored in Madison in sexual assault cases

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2014

RACINE When sexual assault victims go into the All Saints emergency room, they are not always ready to contact police. Hospital staff give those victims choices, and as one of those options they are able to have a forensic exam where DNA evidence is collected in case they decide to work with police later. In the near future that evidence could be sent to Madison for storage, possibly giving some victims extra time to report. That evidence is currently stored at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St., for three to six months and up to a year for some cases, although space is limited, said Rachel Cortez, coordinator of the hospitals Sexual Assault Treatment Center. But at other hospitals and clinics around the state, sometimes that evidence is only stored for a matter of days or weeks, said Jill Karofsky, executive director of crime victim services for the state Department of Justice. The state is now planning on going to a new system where evidence collected from sexual assault victims would be stored in one centralized place at the crime lab in Madison, Karofsky said, and there would be statewide consistency in how the DNA evidence is stored. The … Continue reading

JOHOR BAHARU, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The National Biotechnology Talent Development Centre will be set up in Johor to address competency gaps in human capital requirement for the biotechnology industry. Established through collaboration between the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation's (BiotechCorp) Industry Centre of Excellence for Biotechnology, Johor Biotechnology and Biodiversity Corporation (J-Biotech), and Universiti Malaysia Pahang, the centre is set to begin operation early next year. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the centre would help produce competent human capital for the biotechnology industry and woo foreign companies to invest in the sector in the state. Companies could provide opportunities to students to undergo industrial internship to prepare them for the biotechnology industry, he told a news conference after opening the Johor Bio Conference & Exhibition 2014 here today. J-Biotech's Chief Executive Officer Wan Amir Jeffery Wan Abdul Majid said the centre would be located at the J-Biotech premise at the outset. "We are not going to build big buildings or infrastructure. We will coordinate with the industry and use their equipment or premise to provide training to students," he said. Simply complex: The origin of our body axes

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2014

The fresh-water polyp Hydra, a member of the over 600-million-year-old phylum Cnidaria, is famous for its virtually unlimited regenerative capability and hence a perfect model for molecular stem cell and regeneration research. This polyp, with its simple structure and radial symmetry, can help us understand how our body axes came to evolve. Scientists from Heidelberg and Vienna have brought this evidence to light through their research on the formation of new polyps in the Hydra through asexual reproduction. Their findings have now been published in the journal Nature. Project participants include a working group under the direction of Prof. Dr. Thomas Holstein and Asst. Prof. Dr. Suat zbek at the Centre for Organismal Studies (COS) of Heidelberg University and Dr. Heiko Schmidt at the Center for Integrative Bioinformatics Vienna (CIBIV) of the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL). The Hydra reproduces asexually by producing buds on the body wall of the adult, which then mature to form new polyps. The Heidelberg researchers delved into this process at the molecular level and discovered that a signal pathway is used that triggers the left-right asymmetry of organs in higher animals, including humans. The processes that play out at the molecular level are strikingly … Continue reading
