DNA On Ice Cream Stick Links 3-Year-Old Crime To Michigan Man

Get Breaking News First Receive News, Politics, and Entertainment Headlines Each Morning. Dewayne Haag (Michigan Department of Corrections) BAY CITY, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Police say a DNA analysis has linked a three-year-old burglary case to a Michigan man. Back in August 2011, police were called to the Pinconning VFW Hallafter an employee arrived for work and found the doors pried open.During their investigation, police realized $725 and five boxes of candy bars worth $125 were taken from the VFW hall. They also found a wrapper and stick for an ice cream treat near where the cash box was stored. Investigators tested the ice cream stick for DNA and catalogued the results. In January 2012, investigators got an alert that a sample from Dewayne Haag, who was serving time for various breaking and entering convictions, matched the DNA on the ice cream stick. Police contacted Haag, 44, in September 2012 to get a fresh DNA sample but he refused, telling police he was innocent because he makes sure he doesnt leave evidence behind, The Bay City Times reported. Police eventually obtained a new DNAsample from Haag after obtaining a search warrant and after the results came back, authorities issued a warrant … Continue reading

NDOW: Quagga Mussel DNA Found at South Fork Reservoir

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2014

RENO, NV - The reservoir at South Fork State Recreation Area has tested positive for quagga mussel DNA, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). Officials did confirm that no adult quagga mussels or veligers (larval stage quagga) were found in that waterway. While the reservoir is not considered infested at this time, NDOW and the Nevada Division of State Parks (NDSP) are implementing immediate strategies to limit any potential of quagga mussels spreading from South Fork to other locations. Waterways are not deemed infested' until adult quagga mussels are found, said Jon Sjberg, Fisheries Division Administrator at NDOW. But we absolutely cannot wait for that potential before deploying strategies to keep any possible infestation from spreading. Beginning now, all boats entering or exiting the South Fork State Recreation Area will be inspected by officials. NDOW is telling all boaters leaving South Fork to remove their plug, drain all water and dry their boat for at least five days before using that boat on another waterway. Otherwise, those boats can undergo commercial decontamination. Mandatory inspection will continue through the boating season until the end of October. The detection of quagga mussel DNA in South Fork is directly attributable to … Continue reading

High concordance between EGFR mutations from circulating-free tumor DNA and tumor tissue in non-small cell lung cancer

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2014

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations found in the circulating free tumor DNA (ctDNA) from the plasma of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients correlates well with the EGFR mutations from patient-matched tumor tissue DNA. EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy is approved for EGFR activating mutation positive patients with advanced NSCLC, but the standard for determining mutation status is with DNA derived directly from tumor tissue, which can be limited or not available. A more abundant and less invasive source of tumor DNA may be cell free tumor DNA found circulating in the blood. International researchers prospectively analyzed and compared tumor and matched plasma DNA for EGFR mutations from 1060 patients that were screened as part of a phase IV, open-label, single-arm, first-line gefitinib in EGFR mutation positive Caucasian patients. Also, when two plasma samples from the same patient were available the mutation status of each was compared. The September issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, the official journal of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), reports that the mutation status concordance between tumor and matched plasma for 652 patients that had results for both was 94% (95% CI 92-96) with a sensitivity … Continue reading
