Biologists reprogram skin cells to mimic rare disease

Posted: Published on August 23rd, 2014

Johns Hopkins stem cell biologists have found a way to reprogram a patient's skin cells into cells that mimic and display many biological features of a rare genetic disorder called familial dysautonomia. The process requires growing the skin cells in a bath of proteins and chemical additives while turning on a gene to produce neural crest cells, which give rise to several adult cell types. The researchers say their work substantially expedites the creation of neural crest cells from any patient with a neural crest-related disorder, a tool that lets physicians and scientists study each patient's disorder at the cellular level. Previously, the same research team produced customized neural crest cells by first reprogramming patient skin cells into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, which are similar to embryonic stem cells in their ability to become any of a broad array of cell types. "Now we can circumvent the iPS cells step, saving seven to nine months of time and labor and producing neural crest cells that are more similar to the familial dysautonomia patients' cells," says Gabsang Lee, Ph.D., an assistant professor of neurology at the Institute for Cell Engineering and the study's senior author. A summary of the study … Continue reading

Archdiocese wants ice bucket funds sent to different group

Posted: Published on August 23rd, 2014

The Archdiocese of St. Louis is urging those who take part in the popular ice bucket challenge that raises funds to fight Lou Gehrig's disease to shift their donations away from the ALS Association to a group that doesn't support embryonic cell research. A statement issued by the Respect Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese says: There is nothing immoral about raising awareness for diseases and ethical research towards curing diseases; there is no reason Catholics can't participate. The key, however, is to ensure that donations from participation are being utilized to support morally licit research. The archdiocese suggests instead donating to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute, an organization conducting similar research using only adult stem cells. Chicago ALS Association development director Mary Ilene Blondell says a very small part of ALS Association funding goes to embryonic stem cell research. The ALS Association said it's raised more than $53 million as participants take a bucket of ice water and drench themselves. ReNeuron Group Quote more Price: 3.55 Chg: 0.05 Chg %: 1.29% Date: 17:05 Shares in AIM-listed stem cell business ReNeuron Group rose on Tuesday morning after the group unveiled details of progress with the PISCES clinical trial of its ReN001 stem cell therapy for disabled stroke patients. The group said that the primary aim of the study was to test the safety and tolerability of the treatment in ascending doses of the ReN001 cells in patients with moderate to severe functional neurological impairments resulting from their stroke. The secondary aim of the study is to evaluate efficacy measures for the design of future clinical trials with ReN001, including imaging measures as well as a number of tests of sensory, motor and cognitive functions. Interim data from the first nine patients treated in the PISCES study was being presented by the clinical team from Glasgow's Southern General Hospital at the 22nd European Stroke Conference, taking place in London this week, the group said. It added that there was no cell-related or immunological adverse events reported in any of the patients treated and sustained reductions in neurological impairment and spasticity were observed in most patients compared with their stable pre-treatment baseline performance. … Continue reading

Cryo-Cell Provides Funding for Cord Blood Clinical Trial Application to Treat ALS

Posted: Published on August 23rd, 2014

Oldsmar, FL (PRWEB) August 22, 2014 This funding was made through an additional investment in Cryo-Cells cell therapy research affiliate, Saneron CCEL Therapeutics, Inc. in the form of a convertible promissory note purchase agreement. Cryo-Cell is extremely pleased to collaborate with Saneron on several fronts to enable the filing of an IND, which we hope will lead to regenerative therapies using cord blood to treat devastating neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, David Portnoy, Chairman and Co-CEO of Cryo-Cell, stated. He continued, Although this is only the next step, if Sanerons cord blood product ultimately is successfully approved by the FDA to treat ALS, Saneron will indeed prove to be a very valuable corporate asset for Cryo-Cell. With these funds, Saneron anticipates filing an IND application in the fourth quarter of 2014. The IND for the FDA will be for a Phase I Safety trial enrolling 12 patients that have been diagnosed with ALS, said Nicole Kuzmin-Nichols, President & COO of Saneron. The study will involve the administration of U-CORD-CELL, Sanerons proprietary mononuclear enriched cell fraction of umbilical cord blood to be processed in Cryo-Cells GMP laboratory. Sanerons sponsored preclinical studies using U-CORD-CELL have demonstrated efficacy in various disease models including: … Continue reading

The Ice Bucket Challenges stem cell controversy

Posted: Published on August 23rd, 2014

Because life is precious and human dignity needs to be respected, of course now anti-choice groups are now coming down on the Ice Bucket Challenge. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to question the unlikely philanthropic viral sensation of the summer from its gimmicky premise to the way it overshadows our own governments slashing of medical research funding but its hard to argue with the more than $13 million raised for ALS so far, or the awareness the stunt has raised for the vicious and so far incurable degenerative disease. But the story has taken a new twist as religious groups are now beginning to discourage followers from participating because ALS research at times relies on embryonic stem cells. This week, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati specifically asked Catholic school leaders at 113 schools to immediately cease any fundraising plans connected to the challenge, because the ALS Association funds at least one study using embryonic stem cells in direct conflict with Catholic teaching. Speaking to Religion News Service Tuesday, ALS Association representative Carrie Munk said, Currently, The Association is funding one study using embryonic stem cells (ESC), and the stem cell line was established many years ago under ethical guidelines set … Continue reading
