The truth about gluten snobs

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2014

This article originally appeared on AlterNet. My body was completely breaking down, but I had no idea what was going on, Beatriz Rodriguez said, describing the nine years that passed before she was diagnosed with celiac disease. The actor had suffered from digestive problems since childhood and had her gallbladder removed at age 12 but did not experience any relief after the surgery. It was so normal for me to feel bad that I didnt think twice about it, Rodriguez said, listing stomach problems, low energy, insomnia, extreme fatigue, acne, depression, weight gain and brain fog as some of the symptoms she experienced. She knew her symptoms were related to food, but neither she nor her doctors could diagnose them. Over the years, she tried alternative medicine, acupuncture, holistic doctors, kundalini yoga and Chinese medicine in attempts to find a cure. After many doctors visits and endless tests, I finally took matters into my own hands, Rodriguez said, explaining that she began the Candida diet in an attempt to treat what she thought was Candidiasis overgrowth; the diet eliminated gluten, dairy, alcohol, sugar, fruit, vinegar and a long list of vegetables. The diet helped Rodriguez considerably. I finally felt free … Continue reading

Lupus: Australian scientists identify genetic cause of disease in 10yo girl

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2014

ABC Dr Julia Ellyard said the research will allow scientists to individually tailor treatment. Scientists from the Australian National University (ANU) have been able to identify the genetic cause of lupus in a specific individual for the first time. Lead researcher from the ANU, Dr Julia Ellyard, said scientists have used personalised medicine to identify the cause of the autoimmune disease in a 10-year-old girl. Lupus causes various tissues in the body to become inflamed, swollen and painful. The disease can affect the skin and joints of a patient, but can also target major organs. While it has been previously known that there are genetic causes for the disease, it is not known what triggers lupus. It might be triggered by injury, illness or a period of stress. "Using DNA sequencing, the approach we've taken, we've been able to identify the specific cause of this child's disease," Dr Ellyard said. "(It is an) increased amount of a particular molecule, called interferon-alpha, being produced." Dr Ellyard said while any treatment would target the girl's specific condition, it could lead to new ways of treating other people with lupus. DNA modification linked to Alzheimer’s disease

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2014

Published 17 August 2014 Markers added to DNA around the ANK1 gene could be linked to brain changes in Alzheimer's disease, according to new research published in Nature Neuroscience today (Sunday 17 August 2014). Two studies, one led by academics at the University of Exeter, looked at chemical markers on the DNA in the post-mortem brains of approximately 1,200 people who had died with dementia. In areas of the brain affected by Alzheimer's disease, the DNA contained a different pattern of marks than in areas of the brain that were not affected. These epigenetic changes represent a mechanism where environmental factors can influence the expression of nearby genes. In the study led by Exeter University, DNA marks around the ANK1 gene were most strongly correlated with advancing stages of the disease. Dr Clare Walton, Research Communications Manager at Alzheimer's Society said: 'Dementia is the most feared condition in people over 55. Despite an increase in public awareness scientists still don't know enough about the intricate processes which cause Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. Epigenetics is an exciting field of research that can help us to understand how the environment and our genes interact in the development of … Continue reading
