Bioengineers create functional 3-D brain-like tissue

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 11-Aug-2014 Contact: Margot Kern nibibpress@mail.nih.gov 301-496-3500 NIH/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging & Bioengineering Bioengineers have created three-dimensional brain-like tissue that functions like and has structural features similar to tissue in the rat brain and that can be kept alive in the lab for more than two months. As a first demonstration of its potential, researchers used the brain-like tissue to study chemical and electrical changes that occur immediately following traumatic brain injury and, in a separate experiment, changes that occur in response to a drug. The tissue could provide a superior model for studying normal brain function as well as injury and disease, and could assist in the development of new treatments for brain dysfunction. The brain-like tissue was developed at the Tissue Engineering Resource Center at Tufts University, Boston, which is funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) to establish innovative biomaterials and tissue engineering models. David Kaplan, Ph.D., Stern Family Professor of Engineering at Tufts University is director of the center and led the research efforts to develop the tissue. Currently, scientists grow neurons in petri dishes to study their behavior in a controllable environment. Yet neurons grown in two dimensions … Continue reading

OVERVIEW: You probably have a general understanding of how your body works. But do you fully comprehend how all of the intricate functions and systems of the human body work together to keep you healthy? This course will provide that insight. By approaching the study of the body in an organized way, you will be able to connect what you learn about anatomy and physiology to what you already know about your own body. By taking this course, you will begin to think and speak in the language of the domain while integrating the knowledge you gain about anatomy to support explanations of physiological phenomenon. The course focuses on a few themes that, when taken together, provide a full view of what the human body is capable of and of the exciting processes going on inside of it. The themes are: Developed with best practices in applied learning theory, this course offers an active learning experience for any student in the form of pre-tests, ample practice opportunities, 3D interactive images, walkthrough videos, and other special tools and applications that will increase your comprehension of anatomy and physiology. Ultimately, your understanding of the material offered in this course will provide you … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Shark Bite: The Teeth Aren't the Only Thing That's Deadly

Watch more news videos | Latest from the USCopy Amy Tatsch was boogie boarding off the coast of Florida less than three months ago when she felt something bump her right leg. Hard. Just as it registered that there was a shark in the waist-deep water with her, she felt razor-sharp teeth rip away half of her calf. I really didnt think I was going to make it back out with the amount of blood I saw, the 38-year-old mother of six told ABC News. I thought I would end up passing out, or I thought the shark was going to come back and attack me and my brother. 'Shark Week' to 'Sharknado': Why We're Obsessed With Sharks Shark Versus Cow: Which Is Deadlier? Swimmer Bitten by Great White Shark Off California Coast Tatsch, whose 2-year-old twins were with her family on the beach, never saw the shark that bit her, but the rare encounter left her lower right leg almost unrecognizable. The bite had gone down to the bone. A shark expert later determined from the wound that it was a 6-foot bull shark that had attacked her. Somehow, she caught a wave into shore and shouted for help. … Continue reading

D-B grad celebrates new lease on life in Transplant Games

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2014

Home | Back August 11th, 2014 5:30 pm by Marci Gore Ginger Carrick Curlee was just shy of her 40th birthday in 2008 when the stay-at-home mom was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. At the time, her two sons were just 7 and 2. After an aggressive treatment protocol that included two rounds of chemotherapy, Curlee, a 1986 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, received an allogeneic bone marrow/stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor through the National Bone Marrow Registry. And although the treatments did what they were supposed to do, the fight against cancer took a toll on Curlee's body. She knew she needed to regain strength and muscle tone. During that time, Curlee read an article in the newspaper of Cary, N.C., where she and her family now live, about Kim Estep Lampley, a double lung transplant survivor, who, at 52, swam at the World Transplant Games in Australia. Curlee, a swimmer, was excited to learn that the transplant games feature a variety of sports. "There are lots of fundraising events, like those for breast cancer, that involve running. But I don't run. These transplant games are something anybody can participate in," she said. Curlee, the daughter of … Continue reading

Plastic surgery patients in S Korea get certs to prove identity

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2014

SEOUL: South Korea has become the home of plastic surgery, with one in five women in Seoul estimated to have undergone a procedure. Women from other parts of Asia, particularly China, are travelling to Seoul to get the Korean look. But some are having problems getting back into their home countries after going under the knife. Ms Zhang Han, 26, took a few days off from work in Beijing to come to South Korea, hoping for a prettier look. "My main objective is to look prettier but I was worried about the quality of surgery and the outcome. So I did a lot of research online but was worried about undergoing surgery in China. My friends go to Korea frequently and they told me the quality of cosmetic surgery is very good, that's why I'm here, she said. Ms Zhang said she believes it is safer to get the job done in South Korea rather than back home in China, and is undergoing facial shaving to help her face look smaller. Her doctor explains that in such cases, the clinic will issue her a certificate explaining why she looks different from the picture on her passport. Foreign patients who have … Continue reading

BioEden calls for transparancy and education on stem cell availability

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2014

(PRWEB UK) 11 August 2014 BioEden the specialist tooth stem cell bank calls for a more intelligent approach, transparency and public education regarding stem cell banking. "The public needs to be made aware that the success of stem cell medicine is largely dependant on the right material being available at the right time," says Tony Veverka Group CEO of the rapidly expanding specialist bank. "With 1 in 3 people predicted to use stem cell therapy within their lifetime people need to know what their choices are at a time when they are able to do something about it, for example obtaining stem cells from their childrens naturally shed baby teeth." BioEden pioneered the banking of stem cells from childrens baby teeth in 2006 in Austin Texas, and now operates in 21 countries. BioEden says its unique process has many advantages over other forms and sources of stem cells, and eliminates the costly and painful process of getting stem cells from bone marrow for example. The BioEden process is patent protected and offers the most natural form of stem cell banking that exists today. "It is nonsense to say that a dental surgeon needs to extract a childs baby tooth in … Continue reading
