Bioengineers: Matrix stiffness is an essential tool in stem cell differentiation

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 10-Aug-2014 Contact: Catherine Hockmuth chockmuth@ucsd.edu 858-822-1359 University of California - San Diego Bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego have proven that when it comes to guiding stem cells into a specific cell type, the stiffness of the extracellular matrix used to culture them really does matter. When placed in a dish of a very stiff material, or hydrogel, most stem cells become bone-like cells. By comparison, soft materials tend to steer stem cells into soft tissues such as neurons and fat cells. The research team, led by bioengineering professor Adam Engler, also found that a protein binding the stem cell to the hydrogel is not a factor in the differentiation of the stem cell as previously suggested. The protein layer is merely an adhesive, the team reported Aug. 10 in the advance online edition of the journal Nature Materials. Their findings affirm Engler's prior work on the relationship between matrix stiffness and stem cell differentiations. "What's remarkable is that you can see that the cells have made the first decisions to become bone cells, with just this one cue. That's why this is important for tissue engineering," said Engler, a professor at the UC San … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy adds guest star Geena Davis for season 11

With Greys Anatomy season 11 filming underway, Geena Davis has been cast as a new surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Although Greys Anatomy has lost an amazing talent in Sandra Oh theyre gaining an Oscar Winner with Geena Davis. While The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Davis would be playing a surgeon its not clear what department shell be joining. Her role is described as a major arc for season 11. At the end of Greys Anatomy season 10 it was revealed that Merediths half sister (that she doesnt know about) Margaret Pierce was hired as head of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Its possible that Davis character could be taking the job left empty by Cristina. Actress Kate Burton will also be returning this season to play the role of Ellis Grey in the form of flashbacks. Were guessing that the flashbacks will fill in the void of what happened with Margarets birth/adoption and how no one seemed to know about it. You may recognize Davis from her roles in Commander in Chief, Stuart Little, A League of Their Own, and Thelma & Louise. Davis won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1989 for The … Continue reading

Teen writes book, hopes to see it as TV series

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2014

NEWARK, Ark. (AP) - While many teen girls are concerned with the latest fashions, cell phones and their friends, 15-year-old Abby Summers has bigger issues - like how to convince major Hollywood producers to turn her book into a television series. Summers has recently published her first book, The Unknowns, and while that might be satisfaction enough for some people, Summers is already planning the second book in what will be a trilogy and will be pitching her book before producers in Los Angeles in September, The Batesville Daily Guard reported (http://bit.ly/1oyMO26 ). Summers fictional book, The Unknowns, centers around six teenagers who awake to find themselves in a forest and make their way to a place called Ataxia. The main character, Alex, is adopted and raised in an abusive home with alcoholic parents and has learned to survive on her own - a trait she would need to survive. Summers book shows shes got quite an imagination as it is a far cry from her real life with parents Mark and Crystal and brother, Andrew, 17, who has Bardet-Biedl syndrome with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that will eventually take his sight. The trip to Los Angeles will double as … Continue reading
